Why do you guys think it is that Nintendo's DS beat Sony's PSP? According to most review sites, the averages (in terms of games scores) are actually higher on the PSP. Did Sony go wrong with the PSP, or did Nintendo just do too many things right?

It's not like PSP doesn't have any games worth playing, so how come the DS beat the PSP? Do you think of the PSP as a failure, or did Sony's entry into the handheld market set them up well for the future? Will the next handheld battle be closer, or will Nintendo dominate once again?

What do you guys think?

Because Sony tried challenging the gaming handheld emperor with a portable multimedia device that also played games.

I think thats the reason. It was advertised to much as a multimedia device rather than a handheld that plays games. Also its more expensive.

Price had a lot to do with it. The amount of time some games take to load is unforgivable because most people who play handhelds on the go don't want to wait for anything. Most gamers want games and dont care if a handheld can make toast or if it flies them to the moon.

That and most of it's games try to emulate the ps2 experience. But because of the lack of a second analog stick *and the analog stick on the psp being a crappy analog nub* Most of the games are better played on the ps2.

For me, it's because of the games. The PSP doesn't have enough of them to justify purchasing one and there are definitely problems with the loading.

It beat the PSP in sales, but I love the PSP's library more than the DS's.

Games I'm Liking on PSP:

Metal gear: PO

Crush

Street FIghter Alpha 3 MAX

Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles

Final Fantasy Crisis Core

God of War Chains of Olympus

Silent Hill: Origins

Games I'm liking on the DS:

Yoshi's Island

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

It just fits my taste better

If you look at exclusives, the DS has the better library. Exclusive titles are the ones that drive sales.

PSP:2 AAAe titles and 19 AAe (not counting Tekken DR because of the PS3 version)

DS:5 AAAe titles and 23 AAe (counting Nintendogs as one game and Pokemon as one game)

But the DS beat the PSP for a variety of reasons. The mass-market games, the price, backwards compatibility, Nintendo's handheld reputation, the touch screen, and the more diverse library were contributing factors.

But it's more what Sony did wrong than what Nintendo did right. Marketing it as a multimedia device has devastated software sales. The battery life and load times have been bad. The system is very expensive and not at all ergonomic.

All criticism aside, the PSP is still a wonderful system and I will be purchasing the redesigned version.

My opinion is that the DS won because Nintendo already had a great history with Handheld devices on the Other hand Sony was completely new to it (unless you count the play station pocket a handheld) I own a PSP and a DS and prefer my PSP.

So guys, will the next handheld battle be closer, or will Nintendo dominate once again?

But the DS beat the PSP for a variety of reasons. The mass-market games, the price Nintendo's handheld reputation, the touch screen, and the more diverse library were contributing factors.

SmashBrosLegend

I think Nintendo's handheld reputation is the biggest factor out of those. When I bought my DS I knew about how good the GBC and GBA were, and I expected the same amount of fun from the DS (and I wasn't disappointed).

Nintendogs/Brain Training/Pokemon are the reasons it's more than doubled PSPs total sales though.

I'm thinking maybe Sony will learn from their mistakes and make a handheld that can overtake nintendo's next one. But hey it's just all speculation. Nintendo seems to be on a roll now with every new handheld/console they make so they have a big chance at dominating again.

I think Sony will go for the creative/good value for money route, just like Nintendo did with their DS. It's going to be really interesting to see what happens, but I still think Nintendo will come off the victor.

It's gonna be closer though, I think Sony will learn from their mistakes.

Indeed they will. I don't think there is anything that can supplant Nintendo from its position in the handheld market. If Sony tries to at least make a handheld (which they won't, it will just be another multimedia device that plays games) they still would have to compete with 90% of Japan owning a DS in 2012. :P

Not a chance, the PSP will have a hard time looking for support.

Just look at the software sales between the two.

The DS is winning because of it's unique gameplay, cheap price, first party games, and great library. The PSP isn't winning because it doesn't have a cheap price, and the gameplay isn't controlled differently. You have to admit though the PSP is a worthy handheld, and at 20 million that's not considered a failure for starting in the beginning.

I have a DS, and am thinking of getting a PSP when they release the new model because I love God Of War. I wish they had more exclusives though. I really don't get into handhelds though, I had a DS since launch and only got 6 games.

I myself don't think Sony should even try. They should try and do what Nintendo isn't doing... and that is offering a portable multimedia device that plays games. I know I want a PSP now because I want to play quite a few PSP games and also want something to store music so I can listen to it on the go (but that's still a while off).

What they should do is offer something that costs less than the current PSP. They should try and start out with a decidedly low price point. One that can appeal to more people. $150 seems very right. If Sony wants to be successful, they need to make their own market... because Nintendo pretty much has the entire handheld gaming one on lockdown... and has for a long time.

well the psp certaintly isnt a failure as it makes money for Sony but coming 2nd out of 2 never sounds good plus instead of focusing on making good games they came up with about a million thing the psp could do instead oh yeah and the fact that the so called portable system couldnt fit in most pockets

Yep, that's what I mean. Go the DS route, ie, a cheaper price/creative games. I think they're going to have something like the touch screen or the wiiremote (ie, something unique) and I think Nintendo will as well.

So that's why I think the next battle should be interesting. I doubt Sony will do another multimedia device.

Vendor:-Sure thing, here's your DS.

That's why.
