A guy showed me pictures of joysticks and driving wheels made specifically for consoles. They had big, broad bases, like you were supposed to put them on a table. But I've never heard of anyone playing on a console with a keyboard and mouse (at least not legally.)

The only reason I can think of is to make console owners get used to gamepads, and to get them to believe that there is nothing better than a gamepad for input. That way, the console companies can keep gamers from buying gaming PCs, and instead, keep them buying consoles and console games.

PS3 supports a keyboard and mouse. It even does so on some of its games, Resistance and UT3 for example.

There is actually a good reason for this. Online play, it is not exactly fair somebody using a pad and somebody using a mouse keyboard going up against each other in UT3 is it.

I think any RTS fan, or any fan of games with a lot of hotkeying would disagree with you. Albeit lately the d-pad seems like a decent substitute (if you hold donw a shoulder it could even garner another 8 "hotkeys").

How come the PS3 is the only console that supports keyboard& mouse? And can you actually play a shooter on the PS3 with a keyboard & mouse, PC style???

Also, whoever said that it's all because of online play, the only consoles that support online play are the xboxes and ps3. N64, NGC, PS, and PS2 have almost no online games, yet they do not support keyboard& mouse, even for shooters. Plus, the xboxes and ps3 can block keyboardusers from online server but allow them to use keyboard & mouse in single-player. Also, they could have some servers for only gamepad users, and other servers for only keyboard& mouse users.

What I don't understand is, why is keyboard and mouse SO important for gaming? I actually have a lot of fun using my gamepad. I don't really want to ruin my keyboard while playing games when I need it for typing. Anyways, I have a dedicated keyboard that is attached to my X360 for messaging. I really prefer shooters, racers and other sports games on a gamepad than a keyboard any day. However, that doesn't mean I don't play shooters on my PC.

But most console shooters use lock-on. Do you really prefer lock-on as opposed to having to aim somebody square in the head (which you are able/forced to do with a keyboard & mouse?

Uhh has anyone actually plugged a USB keyboard into a 360? My apple pro keyboard works beautifully with the 360. Wouldn't it be ironic if the 360 only supports apple keyboards?

This has been out for ages for the PS3:
The PS3 Wireless Thumbpad. $29.99 MSRP.

Though, I refuse to buy it for more than $20, I actually want one.

EDIT: Though it's made by madcatz, not Sony. (like that really matters eh?)

Yep, that's the whole point of FPS's, the main gameplay element is aiming. When you take out the ability to aim for yourself, I don't see the point in it.

Who plays consoles sitting at a computer desk? hence the reason there isn't support for mouse and keyboard in console shooters. imagine having to play with a keyboard while sitting on your couch. If you prefer to point and click you better off using a computer.

Someone compared this to the upcoming MS minipad and believe the MS one to be better--unlike the Madcatz one, the MS one goes underthe pad--a more natural place for your fingers and/or thumbs to reach.

There are 3rd party products that mimic a mouse and keyboard but from what i read you are better off sticking with the controller. If a game doesn't have native support for a mouse 3rd party producs wouldn't do much.

IGN Gave the FragFX a 9.1, not bad for a third party periphial, in fact, it's apparently better than the alternative.

Many people say that consoles are better because you can play in front of the TV on the couch. However, it is easy to connect a tv to the computer. If you want a full console-like experience, you can even attach a gamepad. But I feel good sitting up while playing because I play tense games: I'm not relaxed enough to lean back.

I only hope that future consoles stick with the wii-mote nunchuck style controllers as the main controller style.

Nintendo definately hit the nail on the head as far as control this generation.

Wii has support for USB keyboards. Just for messaging though.

The Gamecube had a keyboard/controller combo.
