In GTAIV getting into a game takes forever...its like the old PS2 lobby type system...simply a pain in the arse...I don't even bother anymore trying to get into a game...only when my friends are playing I might jump in...gah..

MGO isn't as bad as gta4s. It's quite fun just give it another chance i hated it at first than after ranking up with more skills it got fun. 1 character isnt bad, you dont really need more than 1, you can always buy a new one. Maps are alright imo.

first off, reviews are opinions. It doesnt really matter. you don't have to agree.

and maybe the games did meet or surpassed their expectations?

but how can a large (or significant) part of a game be crap, yet the game still get a prime score?

Konami decided on only allowing 1 character for a variety of reasons:

1) Less stat boosting (for every stat booster there is someone butchering their own stats)

2) Make use of the Reward Shop (Buy gear for your character, to change his looks whenever you wish)

3) To charge people $7 for another character (main reason, I think. Konami seems to be nickel and dimeing it's sers with MGO)

MGS4 got a 10/10 because the game revolutionized stealth action, added a huge amount of ways to play the game, with more weapons (most that could be customized) in the game than (I believe) any shooter currently made, had an incredible story, that was told well, played very smoothly, had near perfect difficulty for each mode you chose, a huge supply of easter eggs, beautiful visuals, 1080p, amazing audio, good concepts for characters/environments, and the creators went above and beyond people's expectations with the game.

Seriously, if any game deserved a 10, MGS4 is it. Some people may not want to hear it, but it's the truth. Konami took a system that was already very good (MGS3: Subsistance, which scored a 9, I believe), and just perfected it.

I suppose it boils down to what reviewers were expecting of the game.

Traditionally both franchises have been single-player, meaning that the multiplayer was seen as an addition, rather than part of the actual game. Does indeed complicate the idea of giving the full package a 10 though.

my only gripe with the weapons is that in SP...you can't use most of them...especially on higher difficulties when snake can't take much damage....you pretty much have to resort to the gun that makes them zzz instead of using the RPG.

I'd disagree. MGS4 felt more like an ultimate refinement of the franchise, an evolution rather than a revolution.

Most of the things it did (gameplay, story) had been done before, it's just that MGS4 did them better.

as a matter of fact yes

GTAIV wasn't nearly as fun as San Andreas, had many things left out such as mini-games, cheat codes that defined GTA, rpg style of leveling, police AI was borderline retarded, story stopped being good after about 12 hours.

MGSIV too many long ass cutscenes, too many codec conversations, gameplay isn't all that great...they give you a billion weapons, yet you're stuck using the silencer tranquiziler most of the game (especially on higher difficulties)

Well, wouldn't the ultimate refinement of a genre deserve a 10? I do agree with what you are saying (I should have worded my thoughts better), but I don't think we will be seeing a stealth action game as good as MGS4 for a very long time. It might have done things other games have done before, but MGS4 did them all at once, and did it well, I believe. I'd say that credits it for a 10.

becouse the reviewer did a bad job reveiewing it , Both games were 9,4-9,6 for me. You cant give a game that does not have a awesome multiplayer these days a perfect 10 when online has became a standrad.

they got a ten because the reviewers felt refreshed while playign them, in todays game world there are many games which are extremely cliche, gta4 and mgs4 are not cliche to any extent, sure they have moments of clicheness, but they are far from what most games today do.

I think GTA 4 MP is actually more fun than MGO.

Running around with 15 other people in a new york city knock off and just blowing crap up is fun as heck.

GTA 4 also has a fun coop as well.

I just want to say that these are easily the 2 best games this gen

GTA 4 dropped some things, But the story was never better, the city never felt this alive, the characters were never this interesting, the gunplay was superior, there is a TON of variety and hours of gameplay, the MP is actually solid and good fun, and the missios are all a blast.

MGS 4 has an awesome story line, the gunplay has been improved, tons of options on the battlefield, alot of weapons to choose from if needed, threat ring was a nice addition, great stlealth mechanics, AMAZING boss fights, and easily some of the best cinematics in gaming.

Both games earned there high score. Maybe not the 10s....but still fantastic games.

it had some flaws from a stleath gameplay standpoint.

The way you cover and shoot is stupid. YOu actually have to get out of cover to shoot up top, side shooting can be done from cover

and in terms of enemey AI and options SPlintercell still had better stealth mechanics.

MGS just did everything else better than Splinter cell such as story, single player pacing, action, gunplay, etc

Online is better in Splintercell though.

I dont like it much either. The SP is amazing, but the multiplayer is not too great.

Finding a game is not too easy, registering is a pain. why couldent it be a part of PSN? since playing COD4 online I expect more when finding a game, MGO has a very dated way of doing things.

The online play is ok, though imo it was meant to be a stealth game, fine, but its almost like people are trying to treat it like arun and gun shooter, which imo ruins it all. There is no sense of teamwork at all, its everyone for themselvs.

Its not that its more difficult or anything, I can sneak around in any online game. its just that MGS for me does not work online as it does in SP.

yep i agree.... however MGO is fun, and i really have a good time playing it.... many may find it too slow paced but its great... GTAIV didnt play much online, but the little i did was ok, still though it took me ages sometimes for a game to start, which was quite annoying...

HYPE HYPE HYPE

had either games been released under a different name & with no Hype you would get a more accurate score. dont get me wrong GTA4 is a great game but its not a 10/10.

I agree with you about GTAIV. But MGS4 replay value isn't in the online man. The single player is a MASTERPIECE and Metal Gear games been known for that and it was never a game about multiplayer. Like someone mentioned it's just an extra. It's not an easy online mode either. It needs time to get used to and once you give it time(2 to 4 matches) you either leave it or keep playing. As far as I'm concerned, I am still trying to complete all 40 emblems(single player), I already did 33(Big Boss and Chicken emblems included). The single player has alot of replayibility. ALOT. Already completed it 7 times. and I'm on my 8th playthrough. The more you play, the more you learn about it and find out things you didn't know they existed. It's a very detailed game and has alot of unlockables, awesome jokes and easter eggs, creativity and epic boss fights(in The Boss Extreme difficulty they are pure EPIC, more challanging and the AI is ZOMG). IGN or GameSpot weren't counting on MGO to decide whether to give it a 10 or not. The online is either you love it or hate it. Same goes with the game itself(single player). I don't know about the online. Alot say it's average and others say it's the best shooter. I do know however that the single player is a 10 and above.

Wow, so many people think a game has to have online to get great scores. The replayability of a game can be furthered by online yes, but without it a game can still be considered extremely replayable. If anything GTA4 would score higher than MGS4 in that aspect since it has a much bigger gameworld to explore and a lot more to do once you've finished. GTA4 still shouldn't have gotten a 10 though.

Well... because of MGO onlines broken Konami system, and shortish game time of MGS4, id give the game a 9.5, though I am quite a fan of the MGS series.

I'd give GTA IV a 9.5 aswell, for the repetition of levels, and 'half baked' online modes, that are mashed into the game too add replay value.

[QUOTE="Hitman533"]10 doesn't mean perfect here at GS. toast_burner

yes it does because they cant give any higher then a 10 there for 10 is as best as it gets that means 10=perfect

unless they add 11

They round it up, mathematically anything over or equal to 9.7 =10

You do realise, though, that bashing GTA IV's online is totally pointless? This is because there are just so many variables. With about 15 game modes, each fully customisable, doing everything from racing to deathmatch to co-op missions, two people could each play GTA IV's online for 5 or even 10 hours and have totally different experiances. Never mind the fact that playing with friends, especially in free mode, can be an amazingly fun experiance. Did you ever stop to think that maybe the guy who gave GTA IV a 10/10 perhaps....you know...played online with the rest of the GS staff?

all that is fine and dandy, but if you can't get in a game 80% of the time...what's the point?

Some of what you said about MGO is pure opinion, and i strongly disagree. Besides the reviewer of MGS4 actually said the online was good. Lag can be pretty bad at times.

I'm not sure about GTA4, though. I played online a bit and it was fun. Just took ages to get into a game.

Some people love Gta4's online, and other love MGO. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's bad and should be marked down.

Which version do you own? Cause personally I have the 360 version and I rarely have trouble getting into a game. Sometimes though I'll be waiting for other players to join for ages, so I find its often best to quit empty rooms and wait until I get one with a population.
