You do realise, though, that bashing GTA IV's online is totally pointless? This is because there are just so many variables. With about 15 game modes, each fully customisable, doing everything from racing to deathmatch to co-op missions, two people could each play GTA IV's online for 5 or even 10 hours and have totally different experiances. Never mind the fact that playing with friends, especially in free mode, can be an amazingly fun experiance. Did you ever stop to think that maybe the guy who gave GTA IV a 10/10 perhaps....you know...played online with the rest of the GS staff?

z_gaming_master

all that is fine and dandy, but if you can't get in a game 80% of the time...what's the point?

Which version do you own? Cause personally I have the 360 version and I rarely have trouble getting into a game. Sometimes though I'll be waiting for other players to join for ages, so I find its often best to quit empty rooms and wait until I get one with a population.

I have the PS3 version...am getting the 360 via netflix any day now...prolly tomorrow so I can compare...

[QUOTE="Hitman533"]10 doesn't mean perfect here at GS. toast_burner

yes it does because they cant give any higher then a 10 there for 10 is as best as it gets that means 10=perfect

unless they add 11

WRONG. 10 means Prime, a game which is way ahead of the competition and is amazing for the time of release. Not perfect, plus like hongkingkong said they round stuff up so GTA4 and MGS4 on the old systems would probably have gotten 9.7/9.8's

I dunno if there will be a difference, but I do know the PS3 version had problems at launch.

GTA4 got a 10 because Rockstar put the whole videogame industry on its back and faced down "the man" known as video game censorship.

Its a low 9s game at best. GTA hasn't done anything innovative since GTA3. There are tones of GTA-like games or games with GTA features. The open world thing isn't some amazing new concept anymore. Its standard and old hat. Its an overcrowded genre and even games in other genres have incorporated alot of the things from GTA3. GTA4s score is based off of what GTA3 did and that technically each game has gotten better (although I don't find GTA4 to be as fun as Vice City) so they've given the series scores based off of that. That makes sense until you realize that they have totally ignored other titles in the market and that what was once innovative is now a standard, over populated genre.

If i'm correct, they haven't made a Battle Arena Toshinden since the days of the PS1. Lets say they finally made a sequel... and it had PS1 graphics, but still better than the old game. It had PS1-era mechanics which were an improvement on the first game but nowhere near as amazing as they were back when it was still the PS1 era. "Well the first game was a 9.1 and this game is better, so it has to be higher... 9.5." Thats silly. You have to judge games in context of what else is on the market. You can't ignore every progression that the genre has made and every other title available (Tekken, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, Soul Caliber).

Everyone forgot that when GTA4 came out because they wanted to reward Rockstar for being the martyr of the industry. And they still had intense and unfounded hate for EA, who they felt were bullying Rockstar at the time. Thats what the GTA 10 is based off of: EA and Manhunt 2.

10 doesn't equal perfect, but its the best of the best. When a game gets a 10, its like saying this game is one of the best of the best. Not the best of the year, but best of the best in the overall history of video games. If GTA3 didn't get a 10 when it basically created a whole new genre, was really innovative, and there was nothing like it, how is GTA4 a ten when games like it are a dime a dozen and its once "innovative" features are now standards of pretty much every game sold.

Seriously?

In GTAIV getting into a game takes forever...its like the old PS2 lobby type system...simply a pain in the arse...I don't even bother anymore trying to get into a game...only when my friends are playing I might jump in...gah..

and MGO...wow...its not even part of the PSN...its slow...characters move slow...it lags a fair amount...you can only create 1 character...maps are a joke...

How could these games get PERFECT or PRIME scores?

Adonymous

all you do in every post and/or thread you create is whine, on topic the reason they got 10 is because they are great games (here is the kicker) according to the OPINION of this website. Now, me personally felt that MGS 4 deserved a 10, based on its presentation alone, GTA 4 not so much, i would give that a 9.

We can also say the same for Halo 3 and Gear of war. How did they get such high scores when the story's are pure ****?

The way I look at it. Games like MGS4, Halo 3, and Gears of War should be based off the single player and story. Anything online is just a bonus add on. That is how u rate a game by and is a reason GTA4 and MGS4 got there scores.

Probably because MGO isnt crap and you just suck at it.

GTA4 however deserved a 9.5

If MGS4 didn't have an online mode it probably would of got a 10 anyway. Singleplayer was the only thing that mattered when it came to MGS games anyway.

MGS4 easily deserves a 10, even without online. GTAIV simply doesn't deserve a 10 in any way.

I love MGO... though I can see how it isn't the adrenaline junkie's favorite. It's a bit more strategic than a COD4, which I'm guessing is something the TC enjoys...

Probably they werent reviewing online experince as reviewer said that you get MGO as bonus when you buy MGS4.

I think MGS4 deserves 10 if leaning on single player experinece.Gta 4 definetly NOT.

They're certainly not the best. But "pure **** isn't the description I'd attribute to them.

Both can get pretty addictive for mutually exclusive reasons.

I don't know why people keep thinking the online part of the game is important. it's the gaming experience you recieve from playing the real game. thats why it recieve a high score. the online feature is just a plus from getting the game. if you dislike the online part of the game still does not mean the game is bad, that is crazy. to me online is not that important, that's why Halo in my opinion was a fail only the first one had a good story. the second and third game story suck, you know why because the developers only focus on the online feature because they know thats the only way their game will sell. i would hate to see the day that all game' have a weak story and good online and by the way of things it looks like thats happening. FOCUS MORE ON THE STORY!!!! thats where you gain the real experience of gaming

It's not always about online capability. And there is still some degree of subjectivity when it comes to writing reviews.

MGO is surprisingly entertaining. The major disappointment(s) I have with it are that the framerate goes to all hell in larger maps when you're sweeping your view over the area, and the weapon selection buttons are very, very clunky. They work fine in single player of course when the game pauses for you, but tougher to use online. The registration process is also ridiculous...

The way I see it, 10 is not saying the game is perfect, but it's better than a 9.0 or 9.5. I don't really see how any game can be perfect.

Chrono Cross didn't even offer 1080p!SolidGame_basic

I think people aremisinterpretingwhat I'm saying. My point is that konami bent over backwards to try to make a game that was amazing in every aspect. Doing a game in 1080p is hard to do without having the framerate drop, and konami put in the extra work to make sure they could do this properly. Besides, Chrono Cross was on the SNES, not PS3. Part of the reason why I bought a PS3 was for amazing visuals to go with my 1080p HDTV (along with the line-up of games), so when a game is in 1080p, it gives it that little "extra" touch, which MGS4 did.

1080p isn't something needed to make a game a 10, but wether people think so or not, a game in 1080p is a little better than the same game in 480i. If visuals weren't an important aspect in video games, we wouldn't be getting next gen systems.

Sure i agree that GTA4 didn't deserve a 10

But as for MGS4 The online is just extra. And its not that bad in fact its pretty fun. It has a different title its not part of the game its all about the single player, with its sky high production values, Perfect gameplay, and Story just on the right side of the Convuluted/brillant fence.

honestly how awesome was it when you SPoiler?

Got*** int**o the me**tal gear*** rex and fought **your way out of that sha**dow moss***es

Hmm i lost the spoiler covering button

Nothing is just 'extra' most games lose points and ratings just because of faulty online, gta4 and mgso are no exceptions, so you'd think, but ign and gamespot both fall to the hype machine. GTA4 is a 9 -9.5 in my books... which is still great, just not perfect. bad online, boring storyline (gta4)...

If you read the GTA4 review, it says that the "online support for 16 players" is part of what makes GTA4 a superb game. I honestly have yet to see or play the online, but it sounds as though a lot here would disagree. Apparently, the Gamespot reviewer thought it was good.

As for MGS4, I understand why MGO wouldn't be considered part of the game. MGO is a seperate project/game in itself, and shouldn't count for or against MGS4.

How did TOny Hawk 3 get a 10 when it doesn't even have online? Online is not a key component in gaming, and the fact that it's been regarded as more important than single player, or local multiplayer, kind of pisses me off.

Because online is considered a secondary aspect to with GTA and MGS. Never before unless you were on a pc back in the day with the original GTA there was never really an online aspect to either of these games. The bottom line is that the muliplayer is an addition and it shouldn't be held accountable overall for the how the game actually is. Obviously some games such as Halo and even Call of Duty for that matter are very reliant on that aspect of the game and the have always been (correct me if I'm wrong). A game such as GTA that never really was an online game nor Metal Gear Solid for that matter were never really looked forward too because of their online aspect, they have always been looked upon on their great SP campaign and story.

Have both those games and I never play online with them, for one getting signed up for MGO is a royal pain and GTA isn't that much fun online.

mgs4 and gta4 both feel like complete games even without their onlines, which i agree are both garbage.

I like MGO, so I'd give the MGS4 package a 10/10 anyway. The only reason that I can see that would explain why MGO wasn't taken into account in the MGS4 review is because MGO is considered a seperate game by Konami and KojiPro.

They're not 10's even without boring and broken online.
