Initially I would say Sony overestimated the selling-power of Blu-Ray, and got owned by MS friendly development environment and ATI unified shader architecture.

However, after further consideration I realized the Wii took all of the PS1/PS2 casuals and left Sony with an overpriced BD trojan horse to battle against MS.

So basically they got f*cked up by Nintendo.

japanese support from what i believe. the ps2 had more more japanese support then the ps3. plus developers decide to take the easy route and develop games for the ds/psp

though that is just my observation

Unsecured PSN had nothing to do with Sony being in 3rd place. Only thing that did was the $600 price point and launching 1 year later then the Xbox 360. They would've been firmly in 2nd had they not done those 2 things. Nothing was going to stop the Wii from getting first though.
