Even though I am a big PC gamer, I actually didn't get started with PC gaming in particular.
I started playing video games in 1998, and got started with a Game Boy Color and a copy of Pokemon Red. For the next two years, I played nothing but handheld games, and since I didn't have access to the Internet or gaming magazines back then, I relied heavily on recommendations from my grade school friends.
I begged my parents for a Playstation 2 (when it was released), but they refused, claiming that I should be satisfied with my Game Boy Color.
But, after seeing how my friends started using word processors to finish their homework, I asked my parents for a computer. They bought me one. It was a Compaq, if I remember correctly, and it ran on a Pentium III processor with Windows 98 pre-loaded onto it. Immediately, I started asking for recommendations from my grade school friends, and most of them recommended Doom, Half-Life, Age of Empries, Command and Conquer, etc.
I still played handheld games (and still do today), but... the scale of PC games made me declare the PC to be my primary platform.
