VAC works well. There are a lot of programs that stop the majority of people who like to use hax, most are a mandatory install to play the game online. I've never encountered someone using hax in all my years.
Its apparently becoming a problem on consoles though, especially Valva games on 360. My friends were telling me they were in a game and someone built a sentry on a heavy.
rule #1 about online gaming.
>>>> never ever join/play on a server that has racist/sexist/hackers on it.
how to identify if its a good server
#1. almost whole of the day it will be full
#2. it will have atleast 1 admin there
#3. the players there wont act like jerks , if they will then >>>>> !admin >>>> votekick
Unlike on consoles on PC we have a thing called admins in servers to ban them
Just find good servers and stick with themToriko42
Exactly.
I usually find a few good servers and frequent them -- never have trouble with hackers. I'll see one MAYBE every few hundred game hours..and they're always promptly dealt-with.
I often see idiots claiming other people are hackers, but to come across an actual hacker (as opposed to just a good player) is extremely rare in the major online PC titles.

If that's "lag", Halo 3 has some of the worst netcode ever.
Also, what about all the Left 4 Dead 360 hacking videos out there? I suppose spawning weapons, noclip, and god mode is just "lag", too

If someone is on a slow connection they will get lag. :? I don't know what videos you are talking about but no one can manipulate the files on 360 games. glitches isn't the same thing. If someone is on a slow connection they will get lag. :?Jamex1987
But the host machine handles the registering of shots. Even if another connected player is lagging, as long as you have a good connection to the host, it WILL NOT affect the game in that manner.

Yes they can. Ever heard of player profiles? Copying them from the HDD and modifying them to bind developer commands (that weren't intended to be used) to the 360 controller?

But they've gotta get the signal that you've fired from that laggy person. Also the signals for when you move and so on. A person on slow-reacting connections will have problems against people with quick-reacting connections. That's why PINGs are such an important online statistic. It's a common tactic of rogue hosts to make sure only allies get good pings and all opponents get bad pings. And it's a tough one to stop since they can just claim they have a bad network link. But they've gotta get the signal that you've fired from that laggy person. The server only needs the signal that you've fired from YOU. The person you've fired at doesn't need to send anything, other than data related to its potition. If you see a player in a specific area, you should be able to shoot him, even if he doesn't appear to be in that area on his own screen.
To put it in simpler terms:
The client doesn't tell the server "Hey, I just got shot!"
The server tells the client "Hey, you just got shot!"
That is, unless the netcode of console games is somehow dramatically different. Pretty much every PC game I've ever played online works in this manner.

So what if you're the one with the bad ping...especially if it comes all of a sudden? Like I said, host-side network tampering. So what if you're the one with the bad ping...especially if it comes all of a sudden? Like I said, host-side network tampering.HuusAsking
I think I understand what you're talking about. The host can cause sudden bursts of "lag" for all other players in the game (by intentionally interrupting the connection) and use that to his advantage, since the gamestate takes place on his own machine. Pretty lame..and another reason why dedicated servers are great.
That doesn't look like what was going on in the video above, though. Not sure what it was, but it doesn't look like lag, nor host tampering.
Consoles don't like userland servers, and third-party dedicated servers on consoles are rare, since devs don't want to foot the cost (especially the bandwidth--commercial bandwidth is a killer). So what then?dedicated servers fix this problem(Admins son).

You could lose your access to your game... which mean you will need to buy another copy to play again. you can still play, you just won't be able to play on VAC servers anymore. still sucks though.[QUOTE="primitive013"]
i use steam and they have an anticheat (VAC secured) to scan your game registry for hacks and cheats. but there are ways around it i think.

Valve fault for leaving those codes in the game. These are exploits not hacks. A simple update gets rid of them and the L4D PCF had or has the same problem. I am sure people that do that can get their console on the ban wagon. I am sure I read valve already patched it.I used to play Combat Arms, and it has Punkbuster (yeah, I know it DOESN'T STOP EVERYTHING), but people still hacked, sadly. And it's not that hard to earn points.

It's not an "exploit", it's a hack/modification to game files on the HDD which requires 3rd party tools to accomplish.
Also, quit pulling stuff out of your ass. I've played L4D from DAY ONE, and I've never seen this happen a single time on the PC version. Why? Because I play on dedicated servers. You need SERVER ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES to accomplish this, which no outside player can achieve by playing on a dedicated server.
All you have to do in an XBL game is host the game to use the hacks in that video. Bam. Server admin status -- you can use developer commands at will. Admittedly, this can be accomplished on the PC version if you host a listen server..but most people dislike playing in that environment anyways (because dedicated servers run significantly better, and because the host can easily cheat in listen servers.)
Yeah. Most games today have good anti-cheater stuff. People aren't dumb. Most anti-cheat are unable to stop all cheats. didn't crysis use punkbuster yet it was rampant with cheaters. i'm sure all 3 of the legit players who were playing crysis multiplayer we're really sad... on a more serious note, if you play valve games or anything with punk buster you're fine. I haven't seen a hacker for a year or two. Also most servers will have an admin who will ban the hacker after a round or two. I remember some funny times on Counter-strike source where i was insta-headshotted by a hacker. Sometimes they can be entertaining....[QUOTE="Wasdie"][QUOTE="organic_machine"]
Some games are worse than others. In CSS, that last time I encountered a cheater was years ago and he was instantly booted by an admin.
Jamex1987
gfwl is an instant fail for gta4 multiplayer.Ban them, use VAC or punkbuster, etc. Console players exploit glitches as well, especially in the big name multiplayer games like Halo and Gears of War, ultimately making the game unbalanced and ruining it for a lot of people.
And GTAIV on PC is garbage. It's a poorly executed port and it's been known to have several issues.Saturos3091
Are you telling me that 360 and Ps3 gamers are using god mode and other hacks? rofl[QUOTE="Jamex1987"][QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"]Not hacks or cheats in console games? You must have been playing different ones to me.Legendaryscmt
So you're saying that PSN and Xbox Live are both 100% immune to cheating?
Obviously the TC doesn't remember Halo 2 when it first came out....Their is no anti-cheat software in GTA4. Its a very easy to hack game. its a bad port for a reason you know.

thats still how its done lol we catch all kinds of cheaters on tf2, they get banned from all the community serversIn cs there is always hackers but thats why there are admins, if no admin is present you just record a demo and report it to the servers forum.

if someone's cheating most pc games have option to vote player out, also the host of dedicated server can ip ban the hacker. It's a known fact that there is a lot of cheating in many PC games but how do you deal with it? In GTA IV there is so much cheating that many people have stopped playing online. Cheating in GTA IV is so bad that basically every server has a cheater. They use god mode and spawn vehicles andin Battlefield they use unlimited strikes and drop unlimited vehicles. Crysis has a lot of cheating but hardly anyone play that online anymore.
One good thing about console games namely PS3 and 360 is that you can't hack and cheat. How do PC gamers deal with this?
