The point is not that it is expensive, it isn't. The point is that you are paying for nothing. You are being charged to be used as a server. I could understand if MS had their own dedicated servers for every game, and the fee was for up keep, but this is not the case. They don't give you anything for free but Demo's, and pictures most people don't want anyway. Then they charge you for everything else on there, and the prices are kind of high seeing as how you are already paying for the service. The main reason for XBOX Live is playing games. PC its free, PS3 its free, why is MS charging? Silver accounts can't do squat. IMO MS should charge if you want to download movies, and TV shows, and buy games etc..., but online play should be free. People talk about MS giving choices with their Console, well Live doesn't really give many options. Either you pay the price, or you don't get squat.

I don't want to hear ease of use or anything like that cause PS3 and PC online is plenty easy to use and its free.

Try getting one dedicated server for $50 a year. It's more like over $50.00 a month for one dedicated server rental.Tracking all those stats for the millions of Xbox players cannot be cheap.

PC online games:

1) The servers are hosted by people with money out of kindness

2) They are owned by companys such as gamespy, who have lots of ads on the servers to cover costs.

3) The servers are private and only a select ammount of people can use them

soon xbl will be free, but wile its not. I'm not paying xD

wow......:| beer and skittles for $5 a month? What kind of trash beer do you drink? Seriously people, if $5 a month is too much for you (I pay roughly $4.17 per month), then you really need to join the working public in the world. Quit complaining about something so lame and become a productive member in society.

As I've said many times, Microsoft shouldn't charging us to play online. If anything, they should be charging for the community features they provide for free. Or they could make the whole service free and make a bundle on advertisements. The way they're operating right now doesn't make too much sense to me.

DucksBrains

And this is what most people don't seem to get, or try to avoid. The problem of XBOX Live charging money isn't the price itself but the principle in charging for a service that should be free in the first place.

I'd like to further the theme of both of these posts.

$5.00 a month is not much money at all, is it?

So the question I put out there is this:

If we can all agree that $5.00 is a negligable amount of money, and no one should be complaining about it, then why on earth is the richest corporation in the world charging this small amount of money for a "service" that other gamers get for free?

So you are saying all you would have to do is give up that short list of crap and you could have played on XBL?

If you had, you would be a thinner, non-smoke smelling sober guy with a bad haircut.

The same reason that infomercials break your purchase of the Ron Popeil Hair Trimmer down into just three easy payments of $29.99 - because idiots have a hard time grasping that 10 payments of $10 is the same as one payment of $100. LIVE defenders try and divide out the cost per-day so it seems insignificant, without ever addressing that they're paying $50 a year for a "service" that they're hosting (as it's P2P). They're literally paying for *nothing*.

In any case, unfortunately we're never going to see cost addressed accurately on these forums, whether it's because of the comfort of self-deception or because people here believe their opinion supersedes fact, it doesn't ever seem to happen.

It may sound crazy, but I pay for Xbox live because of the online community and to play with all the friends I have both IRL who own an Xbox 360 and the ones I've met over Xbox Live last generation.

I have 10 great games for my PS3 not to mention the 12+ downloaded ones I own too. Not sure what you're talking about, you must not play games often or something. NP, I understand.

RotaryRX7

nice to hear,any AAAE?....didnt think so.

If you only confine yourself to GameSpot as the'reviewer of all reviewers'which is completely ignorant.

Now, step out of the bubble and look at other websites, the answer is yes.

The PS3 doesn't have any AAAE games on GameRankings either.

we get it, live is cheap. i tend to play on it alot so i kinda get good value for money. i do not see why they charge for it though, it could easily be done free. ive found that the PC erodes my time on live more and more these days.

$5 for an individual is not much to pay for one month. However, multiply that $5 by every LIVE user and you have quite a sum of money.

I do admit that M$ is totally capable of running LIVE for free, but that's another matter.

And this is what most people don't seem to get, or try to avoid. The problem of XBOX Live charging money isn't the price itself but the principle in charging for a service that should be free in the first place.

Why should the service be free???? Not everything on the internet is free, there are website that cost money to look at then there are places people can get the same thing for free. But usually when you pay for something you get what you want with no fuss or hassle. (yeah I know usually that's porn if you can think of anything else feel free to add)

My cousin has a PS3 and he is going to be going out of town for 2 months and I will be keeping his PS3 while he is gone:D I've asked him before how he likes PSN he said it's good but can have very bad connection and lag. But since I'll be getting his for a while I'll check it out and give it my honest opinion because I have been thinking about getting a PS3 too. Even though it seem kinda pointless because I love my 360 soooo much. I don't care about Blu-Ray nor did I care about HD movies I just like gaming.

All the stuff you bought there was a total waste of money the way I see it (ohh, and you can't pay for XBL in 5 dollar increments, so bare that in mind, and the majority here spent 50 dollars on it, and will continue to do so annually, that is just fair - what can I buy with 40 pounds a year? A decent game for under that amount). I wouldn't buy cigarettes because they do nothing but reduce your life span, turn your teeth and fingers into a yellow colour, and I don't drink. I eat what my parents make, which tends to be free, so that 40 pounds can be quite useful, however. You guys can keep using the $5 sales pitch if you like though.

Why do people always break it down to how much it costs per month and per week....THAT IS NOT AN OPTION when you go to purchase XBL. its a $50 shot all at once.Uptown

Actually you do have the option of buying it for 1 month or 3 months at a time. Maybe 6 months as well.
