Poll How far do you sit from your TV? Is 1080p really that important over 900p (21 votes)

42" TV, sat less than 5 feet away or 50" TV, sat less than 6.5 feet away or 65" TV, sat less than 7.5 feet away 38%
42" TV, sat between 5 feet and 7.5 feet away or 50" TV and sat between 6.5 feet and 9.8 feet away or 65" TV sat between 7.5 and 12.5 feet away 38%
42" TV sat further than 7.5 feet away or 50" TV and sat further than 9.8 feet away or 65" TV sat further than 12.5 feet away 29%

With all the discussions around how much better 1080p resolution on the PS4 is than 720p/900p resolution on the Xbox One. How much of a benefit it is depends on how far you sit away from your TV. I sit 8.5 feet from a 50" TV so will see very little difference between 720p and 1080p and no difference between 900p and 1080p.

How far do you sit from the TV?

with 900p your going to receive a less crisp image. It's less about jaggies at this point but more about Scene detail.

Console gamers thie generaiton have been stating, with absolute seriousness, that you can't telll the difference between SUB 720p and 1080p.

So yeah. Damage control in effect, but console gamers in generla are used to that.

Whether I'm PC gaming, console gaming, or toilet gaming (with a handheld), I sit at least 1-2 feet away.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Its well known in the TV world 1080p is only beneficial when distance and/or screen size reaches a certain level. I'm suggesting if you play in the living room then there's a good chance you wouldn't notice.

The further you sit back the less the resolution maters... Also the size of your TV maters as well. But the bigger the screen, the higher the res you should want. But if your sitting 10-15 feet away from say a 50" TV at 1080p, I would think most of the benefits would be lost. The screen would have to be higher resolution and a bigger size at that distance.

good luck with that. 900p is missing more pixels than 480p vs 720p.

That's the point, if you sat far enough away you couldn't tell the difference. For 50" if you sat more than 16 feet away you couldn't tell the difference between 480p and 1080p.

I sit about 8-10 feet away from every TV in my house. I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p unless I'm playing a PC game where it actually displays more of the game like Civ5... which has text so small it's impossible to play from 10ft away anyways.

As long as next gen games aren't sub 720p, I'm happy.

I call BS on the distance. Here's BF4 beta from Digital Foundry and I can clearly see the difference on a tiny 24" monitor from 10feet.

The answer is no. Most consolites have been claiming they can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p now. But now all of a sudden they have eagle vision after years of playing games at 720p upscaled to 1080p. It's all the bs that is part of system wars. Reality is you will not be able to tell the difference in resolution on multiplats. Now their will most definitely be extra detail if devs choose to take advantage of the ps4s extra power. But resolution? Lol you will have no idea just like you don't now.

You've got to also take into account that it is focusing on a still image in a very small area, could you tell the difference in motion with the whole image? and what about when it is upscaled to 1080?

also just read the article the images have no AA and are downscaled from the original 1080 image, not the same as natively rendering the image at 900. compression artefacts could be an issue with downscaling.

The options in the poll where based on THX and SMPTE specifications for movie theaters. For movies (and games are more like movies than still images) they are pretty accurate according to the professionals.

Indeed, read the article wrong the wording sounded like they took a still image at 1080 and then downscaled then upscaled, but I just misread.

I can indeed tell a difference, but there are other factors with a large screen TV that will make it less obvious, the scaling chip in the PS4/Xbone (PS4 games won't all be 1080) will be better than whatever DF used to upscale. Also size/distance of a monitor is much closer, and a game in motion will make it much less obvious.

@mystic_knight:

Speculation, the rumour is pretty stupid really. It will all be down to devs, the console can do 4k if the game was basic and ran at 24fps, there was no standard this gen as to what resolution games will be. Most will probably just take the hit on both consoles as the gen goes on. Wouldn't surprise me if 720 starts becoming the dominant res later in the gen on both consoles.

According to the experts

Option 1 you would notice the difference between 1080p and 900p.

Option 2 you would notice the difference between 1080p and 720p but not 1080p and 900p

Option 3 you wouldn't notice any difference between 1080p, 900p and 720p.

I think this kid is just trying to convince himself that its ok to play games at an inferior 900p for the next 6+ years on XBone. Telling himself "its okay, its not a big difference, i'll be able to sleep at night".

900p up scaled to 1080p will result in a less crisp image, but that ultimately depends on the size of your TV. The bigger the TV, the less crisp it will look. Up scaling is not as good as it sounds. Native signals are the way to go.

Well according to that graph, I sit around the optimal distance for my 720p TV. So it doesn't make a difference.

For my PC monitor, I can get something of much higher resolution given how close I sit.

10' from a 60" TV and I can notice the difference between 900p and 1080p. 900p is like 1080p with FXAA(slight blur). On my monitor(2' away) it's much worse.
