Not important at all. I buy new systems to play new games. mems_1224Yep. My old systems aren't going anywhere.
GTA V is a easy reminder of just how important BC is overall. It's pretty annoying when you want to jump into next-gen fully right away but have to debate on whether or not to do so on account of missing out on the last few games you're highly anticipating in the process.
If anything, it gives people who are hesitant to adopt early even more of a push to do -- there's comfort in knowing that if there aren't any games that appeal to you right away, you can still play the current gen ones while waiting.
It's good to have it, but it's not essential. Quite frankly digging out/keeping hold of old consoles just because it isn't there is annoying.
Â
But it's so far from being a deal breaker as to render it almost worthless.
Why would anyone buy a console if nothing at the time of purchase interests you? Sounds dumb.GTA V is a easy reminder of just how important BC is overall. For me it's huge.
It's convenient, you can get rid of your old system for some extra money, or trade it, or lend it to a friend, and in the case of having B/C for a system you don't own, it's two systems in one.
Â
I've never owned a Wii, or a 360, so when I look at the Wii U I see two systems in one, but the Xbox One will only provide me with Xbox One games. The Xbox One would have so much more value to me if it did since I really want to play some of the 360 games I missed out on.
I just realized the Wii U is the only next gen system with free online and backwards compatibility...Â

Some people just like to have the latest greatest tech right away due to hype or w/e reasons. Plus, it's not always that clear cut. There could be games that interest you but end up disappointing which might cause regrets. But if you have BC, then you really didn't lose anything in the upgrade.

Given the amount of games it's not getting and the level of their online, that's not surprising.
For handhelds, yes, like with 3DS.
For consoles, I used to believe in having a BC feature is important. Now, not so much anymore. I rationalize that my older consoles aren't going anywhere, so why not play them for as long as I want to. Hell, I still play my generation 6 consoles every now and then.Â
How much are PS2's and how easy are they to find? Depending on the difficulty of that then maybe it's pretty important since I'm sure they all eventually brick.
Very important. One of the top things I consider in a console or handheld.Â

One of the top things? If its one of the top things you consider don't buy the new console just stick with the old ones!
 logic!
absolutely critical.Â
sometimes I want to play command and conquer, theme park, quake 1, rise of the triad, scorched earth, or any other fantastic game from days gone by. its great i don't have to go looking for a pentium 1 any time i want to play a landmark game.Â
pc is in a lucky position with bc so that's kind of unfair.Â
but wii u is appealling in a weird way, because so many games can be played on it, and i havent played some of them which are supposed to be awesome like smg2.Â
pointless, I do not live in the past.
Â
I will only play the latest and greatest, which can only be offered by Sony and MS.
This. The old system might malfunction and it is a bit of a hassle to get my ps2 out, connect all the controllers and then start playing again. I prefer BC. It isn't essential but why not have it?For me it's huge.

everyone shouldn't have to be punished with a more expensive console just because a few people can't wait for a system to get a bigger lineup though. most people don't use backwards compatibility. even less people use it after the first year or 2 of a console's life. How much are PS2's and how easy are they to find? If you haven't bought one yet then don't do it now. The latests models (SCPH-90001) are even more unreliable than the initial batch of X360 models. And I talk by experience because I bought one 2 years ago, have only beaten like 3 JRPGs on it and the laser is already broken. And this is my 4th PS2 since 2003! That's why I now have a PC to play them in HD. I bought Suikoden 3 for less than 10 bucks and beat it around August and dude, it looked spectacular with 60 frames, twice the resolution and wide-screen patch.

Didn't this gen introduce multiple SKU's? I don't see why they couldn't do that. And how do you know how often people use BC? Take the PS2/Wi for example -- one of the most praised features are BC for them.
It only failed to matter with the 360 because the original xbox didn't have a strong enough lineup for it to matter and the PS3 was priced way too high for anyone to really get a chance take advantage of it before it was phased out. Â

from the company's point of view it doesnt make sense. especially since sony proved that people are willing to pay for older games again.Very. The first year after I buy a new console, I spend mostly playing last generation games. meetroid8Yes, exactly, launch libraries suck.
Having Backwards Compatibility adds to the Library of the New System and makes waiting for new games a lot Easier.

So you throw your old games away or do you have 10 consoles standing around?

usually give my old consoles and games to my brother to hold on to. he has every system and a giant library of games going back to the NES, maybe earlier. Why do you care what I do with my stuff? For me its a very big thing because at this point in console power software emulation is pretty much easy to acomplish.
Hell take ps3 for example they took hardware bc out and its a fact that they have working software emulation hence why you can buy ps1 and ps2 games off psn...but they refuse to give the ps2 software emulation to the people, non bc ps3s can recognize ps2 discs.
PC gamer conversation. Person 1"Hey, you should try System Shock 2". Person 2"but, my PC doesn't have backwards compatibility". Person 1".....Huh" danten81
that would never happen
but that was pretty funny. so 10/10
