it's definitely a game

whether it's a good representation of a game or not is a different matter tho

half the time it's impossible to fail

a quarter of the time the game tricks you into thinking you're actually searching for clues

another quarter of the time the game throws some nothing-revolutionary role playing moments propped up by unrealistic over-dramatic scenarios

the QTE's tho are definitely pretty creative and fun, i also liked the moments when the game switches between characters

mechanically speaking of course, the game does tend to give you lots of no-reward/no-consequence interaction, interaction for the sake of interaction basically which is why it's not necessarily the best example of what a game can be

I have to agree with the TC im playing it right now and so far im underwhelmed. My friends talked this game up so much that i expected to be blown away by now. I just finished making lauren some eggs(how exciting), hopefully it does pick up at the end. i still have high hopes for the ending.

I think that, since we're discussing problems here, it would be prudent to bring up another big problem: People who are so condescending and pretentious that they'll actually call somebody whom they've never met "narrow minded" based solely on videogame preference.

Looked at the game's cover, I see. Or at the title of one of the thousand threads. Or at screen that appears when you're picking the game at the XMB. Or the huge letters that appear on top of the menu.

Right, because someone couldn't possibly not like this game... oh wait, yes they could!

I haven't played it, nor would I run out and buy it if I had a ps3, I might buy it when I could get it for like 20 bucks but anyways Would you still call it a game if it was a dvd, and you just used your dvd controller to select the next chapter it plays? like a choose your own adventure book on dvd.

Well i'm not going over his house for tea. But really, c'mon. He creates a topic calling a game that is one of the best this year not a game and that it sucks. He is naroow minded based off of the things he said and that is all I have to go off.

Was I entertained? yes, did I get to make choices in thsi game? yes, did the game test some part of my brain? yes, was the story engaging? yes, does it require me to use a controller? yep!

It starts out relatively slow, I'll give you that, but it's for building each character's back ground, treat this game as if you are reading a thriller, there's a beginning, middle and end. Once you get to Ethan's first trial, the whole thing will pick up, trust me  you start to really care about each individual characters, a bunch of suprise twists/awesome set piece battles and of course, the consequences of all your decisions.

Personally I think it's a game that shouldn't be missed, especially for people that likes adventure games.

You want to remove the scene which establishes the main character and his connection to the story? The scene with his kid intensifies the whole experience, puts into context what you are going after and what the protagonist has been through. Without it, it's not much of a story.

People should treat this like a drama/book rather than a game :P, The pacing is pretty different in this game

I agree that the first section is a very important character building component.

I don't believe you.

At least spell the title right for minimal credibility.

Advid-Gamer

lol fixed, I do have the game, and yes it sucks.

I played a buddies, and while it was a great looking game, the minimal interactivity was a major let down for me. I will watch someone play it rather than play it myself, simply because I couldn't get into it.

Exactly. I felt like I didn't have enough involvement in the game. Maybe I'm just used to all the action games, heck , even RPGs like Mass Effect are becoming more action oriented. People should treat this like a drama/book rather than a game :P, The pacing is pretty different in this game

I think the problem is today everyone has an attention span of about 5 minutes. As someone brought up on point n click games and strategy games like Civ, this isn't slow. You are constantly up against the clock and forced to make decisions with little thinking time at all. It isn't Halo, so it's an interactive book? Come on. Pull the other one.

What I am trying to say is, the way they build up the characters/story context are very similar to a book/movie/drama, you start out learning about a completely blank character, get infos on his daily routines and slowly build up a complex character inside your head, that's what I meant by pacing.

I don't blame people for hating on this game because of it's slow build-up, with so many different games out there, people will simply try another game if it doesn't "hook" you quickly enough, especially when many other games are paced with the instant hooks in mind. That said, personally I'll admit that if I am a bit younger, I won't find much enjoyment out of Heavy Rain. Of course there are some young people that would enjoy it, but generally speaking, due to its pacing, it would be more appealing to game veterans

Thats not exactly how it works. In this game i cared for the characters more than anywhere else. Not many games ever came close to this. Metal Gear Solid series is one of them.

Tried to play more to see if it picks up, for some reason the game has froze twice on me and I have never had a ps3 game freeze. I am at the female character that cant sleep and has dreams that her house is getting broken in to. Was the naked shower scene really needed? Anyway it froze while loading the next scene so I turned it off, I stand by it, this does not feel like a game, interactive move at best. The developers did a good job of trying to make a different kind of game, but its just not fun for me. If this game didnt have great graphics, it probley would have rated a 5.0 lol

What I posted has nothing to do with 'buying into hype', but is refering to your thread title - How is HR even considered a game? I found it pretty offensive.

I also think is funny that I am being bashed for making this topic in SW. This is a good as topic as any, look at some of the crap that gets posted here. Its just that sw is overrun by sony fanboys, and get mad anytime a sony exclusive is called out. Uncharted1 was one of my favorite games this gen, I dont hate for no reason.

Are you suggesting people who dared to enjoy Heavy Rain didn't form their own opinions? The reason people are bashing you is because your initial assertion that Heavy Rain isn't a game at all is nonsense. It's such nonsense as to defy belief. You've been told why.

I just finished it, pretty damn epic though i suspected the story outcome pretty early on and I was right :P Oh, and sometimes it acts like its frozen but it hasnt, its just taking ridiculously long to load. You just have to leave it, turning it off could corrupt your save.

It froze on me once, and no it wasnt long loading.

Oh well it froze on me yesterday. Instead of turning it off, i just went on my laptop and about 5 minutes later, a trophy popped up and it continued on. I have an old 40GB phat so maybe thats an issue. Because i noticed a lot that during fast cutscenes and QTE's, my sound dips in and out and sometimes it gets very choppy. Maybe my PS3 is dying.
