How is the PS3 still considered overpriced?

I just don't see why there are endless topics regarding how overpriced the PS3 is at this point in time. Constantly people say, "Sony needs to cut their price on PS3 or I just won't buy one, they are going to fail!" However, when you look online for a PS3, you can find one say on BestBuy's webiste for $399.99 @ 80GB with MGS4 and Killzone 2. Now compare that to the XBOX 360 Elite for $399.99 @ 120GB with KungFu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones. I like both systems, but I just can't understand why someone would feel that it's overpriced at this point in time. You do get a blu-ray player out of the deal and even if you don't like blu-ray it still plays dvd's (amongst other things).

Is it just that people like to complain or feel some strange allegiance to one system or brand? Anyone else feel the overpriced argument is no longer valid?

because $400 for a console is still more than i'm willing to pay. it doesn't mater if the 360 elite is $400 also. i'm not buying that either.

Because you're comparing the Elite which most people get the Pro anyway. Bottom line: $400 is a lot of money.

Cheapest 360 in the uk - £134 with 2 games Cheapest ps3 in the uk - £299 with no games The ps3 needs a price cut badly, the 360 is outselling the wii 2-1 so i cant imagine how much it is outselling the ps3

Judging from the sales, the PS3 is overpriced. It's economics.

Cause it is.

If one doesn't have a current gen console they could go out and purchase COD:MW2 and a 360 for $260 instead of paying $460

That is a valid point. The argument is more directed at those who have purchased an XBOX 360 and spent the equivalent amount that it would cost to purchase a PS3. In other words if you have spent $400 on one why then would you complain about the other being the same price. I agree $400 is alot of money but to pretend that it is so much more expensive then the 360 at this point seems false.

My360 arcade cost £120 ($195) so naturallyI didn't look twice at the overpriced PS3 and 360 elite. $399 is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a console.

$400 is a lot of money, yes, but you can get the system with Killzone 2 and MGS4, plus you get a Blu-ray player built in. That, to me, is a good deal.

People always need something to whine about. PS3 is the right topic for that!! It is not fair to compare the HD-less and no wireless support console (360 arcade) with another with blue-ray drive, 80 GB HD and a wireless support (PS3).

The PS3 is overpriced because it is still more expensive than its completely comperable counterpart. You've compared the low-end PS3 to the high-end 360, which I'm sorry is just a no-no. I don't care about the "free online/wifi/Blu-Ray/free games/bigger HD" the fact of the matter is that if I want to play games, most of which are on both systems, it cost me less to do that on the 360 than the PS3.

I like the PS3, it's a great system, and personally I'm glad for some of those added features, but it doesn't change the fact with cheaper, comparable product on the market it's overpriced.

The PS3 bundle is a good value, but still too much for alot of people. It's like buying a house that's really worth $5 million dollars for $500k. That's an amazing deal but if you can't qualify for a $500k mortgage then you can't take advantage of it. [QUOTE="mithrixx"]People always need something to whine about. The Arcade has HDMI out so I'm not sure where you're getting "HD-less" from. Especially when the $400 PS3 only comes with composite (480p) cables. I think it's a pretty fair comparison when sales are showing that people don't really care about those features and are buying the 360 despite the stuff that it doesn't have. Blame Sony for throwing a bunch of extra junk and features into the box that people aren't interested in or at the least, aren't willing to shell out the extra money for.

On paper, that makes alot of sense. But in reality, when the average consumer takes the box to the cashier, 400USD is still above that magical pain point.

Low end??? The "high-end" PS3 you speak of only has a larger hard drive and only comes with one game. You can easily upgrade the "low-end" hard drive to even larger then what you term as the "high-end" version. I would make the case that by comparing the elite ("high end" xbox360) with the "low end" PS3 further validates my point.

I paid the full $600.00 for the 60 gig PS3 back in the beging and there's nothing the other systems have that even come close to what Sony delivered out of box in the PS3. I personally wouldn't pay over $200.00 for a top of the line console from the other systems because there really isn't a lot in them to offer.

i think the majority on this forum shouldn't really complain, as it's likely they will have got the premium or elite, xbox live and maybe a wireless adapter. the argument is still there for anyone who is going for a games console, and they see the 360 at £90 and ps3 at £280.

in that scenario the ps3 is overpriced, but if you want the whole deal it's likely to cost around the same price for both.

1st off, the ps3 offers WAY more that what you get with the arcade modeled 360 then, and now, and the arcade model was never 400 bucks. The premium was 400 bucks at launch. The arcade model was 300 bucks

The PS3 is a great deal.

It's like a super streamlined minimalist HTPC that is great for Gaming and all sorts of Home Theater activaties.

Doesn't have too little, and it doesn't have too much, and to top that off, the build quality is great.

No, the problem is that they compare something like the arcade which has significantly less features than a PS3 to a full blown featureful console like the PS3.

One is dirt cheap and the other costs twice as much. to an idiot or fanboy the cheaper thing is a better deal even though it doesn't do as much.

In a way it's similar to the Console price vs PC price arguments.

Lol... what he means is no hard drive (256mb is almost nothing, so you will need to buy a HD if you want to download anything) and no wireless, meaning you need to buy a $80 adapter in order to connect to the internet wirelessly.

No, I think that people judge overpriced by whether the price is over/above what they (or the general public) are willing to pay. For many, even the PS2 is overpriced, and they would not be wrong. That the PS3 is chock-full of goodness is not in question with BR et al... but this is not what determines "overpriced" or "good value." Those are in the eye of the beholder, and most beholders are staying away.

Well my ps3 was actually $500, because I wanted to play my ps2 games and my ps2 was broke. I like my ps3 but it's really only worth $300 especially now that it's not BC.

My 360 was really cheap. I spent $170 on an arcade, and MS offered me a 20Gb hard drive for $30. I spent another $30 on live which is well worth it. On the surface PSN, and XBL look about the same, but XBL has so many more easy to use features, and much better connections for a majority of games. Also XBL comes out w/ everything first while PSN plays catch up (1vs100, netflix, avitars). Also if you know a bit about networking you can tell MS actually knows how to run a long term quality online service, hence you can't easily get a wireless connection.

Yeah, that too. And some of these Arcade owners probably pay for online each year and buy the hard drive too, making it the same price as the PS3 over time.

I dont think PS3 is overpriced, expensive yes. but not overpriced.andrucks
Expensive means something costs alot. Value (good or bad) speaks to the relationship between product/service benefit and price. But all overpriced describes is whether something's price is over/above what you'll pay for it. For many (for most, really), this makes the PS3 expensive AND overpriced at the same time, though it might still be good value... or not.

[QUOTE="mithrixx"]It is not fair to compare the HD-less and no wireless support console (360 arcade) with another with blue-ray drive, 80 GB HD and a wireless support (PS3).xDimMaK

Why not? One advantage the X360 has over the PS3 is its more modular design. You only have to pay extra for the features you actually need as opposed to paying an insane price right from the get-go. But hey, good luck trying to find a Blu-Ray X360 to compare to the PS3.

As for wireless, no self-respecting gamer connects to the Internet wirelessly anyway.

Who needs it when you can get a standalone player for less than $200--even $100 if you look at Walmart hard enough. And with a standalone you can play and watch in separate rooms at the same time.
