Because the five is huuuggge!
Three years, probably. Though considering how the hardware is designed, it's going to be a challenge to slim down.
Not soon enough but maybe It's going be even bigger since they see how people love the yuuuge TumorStation so they're going to double the size and fuglyness figuring they'll sell twice as many. lol :P
My guess it won't be until 2023 or 2024 at the earliest. To be honest, there isn't much issues with the standard PS5. It's a pretty normal launch and pretty much all issues you can think of are overblown and happened to less than 1% of the consoles out there. But of course, due to the pandemic now, (and at the time of posting this) it could be 2025 to get a slim as it is hard to find a PS5 now.
Maybe they won't release a slim, maybe they made a really ugly one just so they can offer a black version later. All they'd have to do to sell people new consoles is to add some black dye in with their plastics as they injection mold the side plates, and that's why they've been so anal about third parties producing and selling their own ;-).
I was hopping for players to have some basic standards and Sony being forced to an early redesign but I'm guessing I'll have to wait 4 years until I get a Ps5 then. :(
@davillain-: There's still issues that haven't been resolved....one of them is the external SSD. With the added heat, those fans will have to work harder to keep it cool, and because Sony have used 5 different fans for the ps5 - some quieter than others - some ps5s will be loud.

Pull the motherboard out of one and design your own shell to stick it in.

I didn't look that hard regarding those issues you mention. I just think its a solid build for now that is.
A long time probably. But the PS5 is such a monstrosity, that when it does finally become smaller, it'll steal the show at e3,,,, and probably the one after that, and the one after that.
Whenever they can shrink the die and, make the power supply smaller.
That being said, it'll very likely still be a large console.
Don't really care about the size, but at this point by default I'll probably be getting the slim model. The whole stock shortage thing has put consoles in general on the backburner for me.
My only complaint is my wife doesn't like the space it takes up, but I personally have no issues with it. Looks great.
But I can see them shrinking it in 18-24 months.
When is the next node shrink for AMD? AMD currently uses transistors that are 7nm.
So probably about 3-4 years. There have been shortages in silicon chips so that's why I gave it a 3-4 years. Also, many other factors because of the pandemic. Maybe 7nm refinements will help? Who knows.
I got mine (finally) a couple weeks ago. I can't stand the size and design. I thought the size was being exaggerated...just the interwebs complaining about everything as usual...but it is HUGE. I would definitely welcome a slim version. I have mine inside a cabinet in one of the compartments with a door. Lucky there was enough room for it to fit. I have an exhaust fan built into the back of the TV console stand so I don't have to worry about heat build up. It does run freaking quite...unlike my Pro's impersonation of a 777 taking off. :) My One X looks like a baby next to the thing!!
