Odd, considering the series sells more and more every year
It can't happen soon enough though. I am so sick of that series and its diehard drones that obsess over it
With a possible rise of MMO's on next gen home consoles, more specifically Blizzard's Titan, and other FPS franchises, I can see CoD decline in sales. MW3 was also pretty bad which results in bored consumers.
CoD will die after the 2nd iteration of it on Next Gen systems.... the graphical upgrade will be enough to keep the masses playing for a while.
Hopefully whatever the boys at.... Oh damn forget their studios name.... ummm.... just a sec. RESPAWN.... ugh... couldnt remember for the life of me...
anyways as i was saying.... hopefully they will make something that will crush CoD.... I'd love nothing more than to see them feast on Kotick's tears.
Not long. I predict sales will go down next year slightly. 2-3 years tops for declining sales, 5-6 years for it to finally fade out.
About more 5-6 years. In next-gen probably someone will come up with a better FPS that will destroy CoD.
Right now I can't see it slowing down any time soon. It's the Madden of FPSs. Everybody knows exactly what they are going to get and they are satisfied enough with the product to not want anything more. Even with increased competition, the CoD fanbase doesn't care.
I remember when Mario was the biggest thing on the earth and Nintendo's main flagship franchise with tons of sales and critical acclaim.
That was 20 years ago.
Though I supposed it could eventually wane like Tony Hawk, I don't think Activision will let that ever happen now that they now how to NOT let it happen and have mostly managed to avoid it with CoD and their precautions (such as limiting themselves to one a year, with 3 different devs so they can all have enough time).
We will always have new gamers, and followers of a game. I can see COD lasting for quite some time. What number are they on with Resident Evil? HCMBusiness_89
6, not counting the 20 something spin offs, remakes and in between titles that weren't numbered.
I can't see it dying any time soon, CoD is going in the same direction as Mario, copy and pasting and copy and paste games seem to get endless praise in reviews as long as they are popular.
What do you mean, more and more people get tired of it every year? Why has it sold more and more each year then? Maybe the 50 people on this forum, not the 10 million people who just play.
I think that after the MW II shooters fever and the modern-times-based fps fever the next big deal will be "sci-fi fps".
With Tribes Ascend, Planetside 2, Mechwarrior 2, Battelfield 2143, Hawken and some other notable sci-fi shooters in development plus the high chances of a unnamed Infinity Respawn game and a unnamed Bungie game all being placed in sci-fi or space probably will be the next big thing.
Turok and Golden Eye were dominant in fps in the console era of 32/64 bits, and Halo was dominant in the 128 bits era; Call Of Duty wasn't a huge success until MW1 in the HD era, so there's chances that some incoming new franchise or iteration would take the new leadership.
Ah, and don't forgot: Diablo is coming to consoles. Is relevant due when you're playing Diablo you barelly need to play another games -or to sleep or to eat-, so, hypotetically, a Diablo III arriving into consoles could do serious harm to COD sales -as long as WoW subscriptions-.
hopefully sooner than later. The entire rest of the industry would be flourishing if Call of Duty wasn't in the picture because of the 50 bajillion dollars (yearly) of redirected funds to other games.
Not necessarily, Madden has practically no competition due to the fact that it owns the NFL license. I can only think of three other football series that ever existed besides Madden. Blitz, NFL2k, and All pro football (I guess four if you want to count NCAA football). That's less competition than the CoD series receives in any given year. I think that between the two CoD will die before Madden. CoD can die, it's just that I can't see that happening anytime soon. It'll die when Madden dies.

As long as people keep demanding it there will always be another COD. I am not buying MW3, I own every other COD and played MW3 at a freinds house and damn, was I bored. Nothing knew really, just some maps and a really short 3 hour campaign, the survival and spec ops is fun though, but not worth paying $60 for.
It's a shame, because COD has some of the best gameplay at it's core, but the series has made zero progress. Kinda like Assassin's Creed, same game every installment basically. I know one guy who ONLY plays COD, he play any other games and whenever heget's online it's always MW3, before that it was BO, and before that MW2 ect... Used to play with him, but not anymore, he just anandoned all his friends for COD.
I don't know how someone can't be tired of the series yet after playing it that long. By next gen I think COD fad will be over and some other genre wil be all the rage, I'm hoping for open world RPG's or platformers!
One more modern game, then a return to WW2 for three games and back to modern. Harder to do a modern shooter when there isn't much fo a war going.
It will last as long as the developers continue making CoD games. It will once again be the dominant shooter next gen, and the gen after that. Sales increase with each new release. I think if they sold the CoD name to bad developers, that could stop the success, but as long as Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer and Treyarch are making CoD games, it will continue to break records in sales with each new release until they stop making CoD games for whatever reason. Even if developers do make better games in the future, they won't be recognized. There have been better games released this generation than Call of Duty, but they weren't recognized. They don't have Call of Duty written on the box.
