I think the arrival of next gen systems is the only thing that could hurt CoD's sales, but we'll see what happens
I don't expect CoD will go the way of Guitar Hero or tony hawk though

It's probably going to last a good amount of time. I have no doubts that both Treyarch and Infinity Ward will be up to harnessing the next console generation's tech, and I understand why they've been utilizing the same engine since CoD2; building a new one would be waste of resources when they only people the lack of "innovation" is affecting are the whiny internet nerds who want want every game designed to them. Can't wait to see what CoD looks like on next gen consoles. To those who are really so naive as to believe the jump in graphical quality won't be immense, well then I pity you and await the day that you are proven wrong.
Forever. It's showing no signs of slowing down, people can throw around their "law of diminishing returns" as much as they want, but it doesn't seem to be having any effect here.meetroid8That's because it's only on its fifth year of incredible success. The next Call of Duty will be the one that determines whether there is a steady increase in revenue, a stagnation, or a decline. This year's CoD is pretty much in the same position as the last big Guitar Hero game.
Shouldn't we make this thread when, oh I dunno, maybe when the next Call of Duty release doesn't break all-time sales records?
Modern Warfare 2 broke all time records. Black Ops broke the record that MW2 set. MW3 broke the record that BO set.
I think maybe we should make this thread once a Call of Duty game is released that doesn't shatter sales records. Heck, I think a more suitable thread would be, "How long do you think it will take before Call of Duty is second place in sales instead of first place"? That's a more reasonable thread, and I would still say 5 or 10 years.
It's over with after MW3. Most of the people I know that are obsessed with the game are now bored with it.
I think it'll die out in a decade because the way it's going more and more people every year are getting tired of it and in 10 years I'll say a lot of the gamers will be done with it

I'd give it two to three more releases before it feel a significant wane.
I think ten years is way too optimistic. At the rate they are releasing you're taliking about ten Call of Duty games. That's a lot of $60 releases to keep this momentum. Not even Halo could stay on top that long and that's with the first three releases spread out across six years. But we'll see. I admit to fully enjoying CoD for it's face value and for as long as they feel fun will be as long as I keep playing them.
I think a lot of it will depend on how good of an engine they are able to create with the next gen consoles. They have been using this modified Quake engine for all the Call of Duty games this generation. When push comes to shove, they're going to be forced to make a new engine or use a new engine for these next gen consoles. What will the engine be like if they make one or which engine they will use remains to be seen. It will be the first time that they are really forced to create something from scratch, rather than copy and paste every single year. When that kind of pressure is placed upon some developers, sometimes they fold and collapse like a house made of cards, while others like Rockstar and Naughty Dog rise to the occasion.
