How long will PSN remain free, if live remains profitable?

I think when Sony increased their PS3 install base, that's when they'll flip the script, and start charging, and these install base can't do anything about it because they already invested money and time and they have no choice. If that ever happens, it'll be a sad day, atleast with MS you knew what you were getting into with XBL with the fee, but with PSN it's free for now but the fact that nobody really knows for sure if it'll really stay free is worrysome.

i think sony will always keep it free because thats one thing that they can draw more people in with to buy their console is free online, many people will be turned away if it wasnt because, i for one am not gonna pay for both psn and xboxlive, same goes for many people, i would just choose one and if they didnt dramatically improve psn then i of course would go with live, so i dont think sony will ever just charge for it out of no where, its going to hurt them more than help them imo, some psn games are baren enough as it is free, let alone how few people there will be if all of a sudden you have to charge for itVendettaRed07

There is no justification of forcing to pay to play online, no matter how good the online is, unless you just like being Greedy.

And no, 50 bucks a year is miles more expensive than 0 bucks a year.

if anything sony will make it ad-supported, considering they're already working out something along those lines....i wouldn't mind this as long as it's not intrusive.

the point in not with profitability, its the ppercentage of ps3 users online vs 360 users online, and the eventual amount of ps3 users who connect their ps3 online

eventually more ps3 users will be online, and they will purchase items and therfore make sony more money

And don't say lag because the PSN doesn't have much, if any visible lag since some games run on dedicated servers if you choose to. The only time you get lag is if you're playing with a very crappy host.

It's alright with anyone. Jack Tretton made it clear this E3 that PSN is and will always be free. Now, unless this guy who is a big CEO is actually mentally retarded, along with everyone else in Sony who pushes out these machines, PSN will stay free. Nobody brags about their service being free and charges you for it the moment later. You know how Sony will keep HOME up? It'll have banners like in real life with ads. Yeah, those partnership ad companies Sony has aren't for nothing. They can big $$$.

I don't have UT3 but MGO is good for me when I have 1 or 2 green bars. MGO doesn't even run on PSN so that whole thing is out. MGO runs on Konami's service, but when finding a good host, MGO can be good. Don't expect other games to not use PSN. I'm sure Sony let it slide as one of the conditions to keep MGS4 exclusive. So, UT3, that's it? Warhawk, 32 player games. NO LAG. Resistance, 40 player games soon to be 60, no lag. SOCOM, coming with 32 player games, going to use both dedicated servers and host servers, I assume will have no lag. Lag only comes when you play with a bad host, and MGO has nothing to do with PSN. I can't comment on UT3 though.

You can't make a service that has always been free to be paid for. Electricity was never free. Internet has not been free. To pay for internet and to play online games after purchasing the game already is pathetic. Online gaming should not be paid. We pay internet for that. It's like paying an electricity bill, but paying $50 a year to turn on a small lightbulb. Don't hit me with this capitalist crap to justify this crap.

Just to play devil's advocate, couldn't this be likened to water? People didn't used to pay for water. but they do now to cover the cost of treatment and piping it to the house.

Peaple never used to pay to play online, but now there's the cost of a unified service involved. You're not paying for the "water", but you're paying for the service on top of the good itself.
