Read your history, man. Edison always felt that people deserved the right to free power. Who did Ben Franklin pay when he discovered a charge lit up a key on a piece of string?cainetao11

That's great if all your power comes from lightning. In the real world, we have to dig up fossil fuels to provide power or collect it in other ways. Power in any appreciable amount requires time, effort, and/or resources to collect. It can't be "free" unless you collect it yourself with resources you own.

Can't see Sony changing much in the foreseeable future. Live may make MS profit but it also discourages alot of gamers from buying one.Burnsmiesta

True, I dont buy live anymore cause its such a rip, I just wait till I get a game that comes with a free month of live than I use it when I want to play a game online.

[QUOTE="Albanian_Killa"]You can't make a service that has always been free to be paid for. Electricity was never free. Internet has not been free. To pay for internet and to play online games after purchasing the game already is pathetic. Online gaming should not be paid. We pay internet for that. It's like paying an electricity bill, but paying $50 a year to turn on a small lightbulb. Don't hit me with this capitalist crap to justify this crap. mattbbpl

Just to play devil's advocate, couldn't this be likened to water? People didn't used to pay for water. but they do now to cover the cost of treatment and piping it to the house.

Peaple never used to pay to play online, but now there's the cost of a unified service involved. You're not paying for the "water", but you're paying for the service on top of the good itself.

yeah i cant stand people like this non of this stuff is free just because psn is free dosent mean somebody somewhere is not paying for it and games have ded servers dont the dev and producers have to pay think about theres nothing wrong with paying a small fee for a service that you enjoy its basic business. Geez some people dont want to pay for anything at all if you cant afford to pay 5 buks a month or 50 for a whole year. If you cant you might want top rethink some things like why your even on a computer posting right now when you dont have the money to afford it.

No, $0 for 13 is free. $50 for 13 months is $50.

I guess when you have a job you look at the world differently

lol i have a job and i refuse to buy a 360 because of the charged online(and other reasons). There is no reason why it should cost money, there are no features on XBL that arent on a PC or not many that are missing from psn. Why do you think games for windows live failed? Because PC gamers arent mental, they wouldnt pay for service where all the features they get dont justify 50 dollars.

You know...I dont mind paying for LIVE, but...when you hear the astrinomical amount of proffit they make off it and we get nothing at all for free or worth a poo it makes me not want to care about LIVE, or MS for that matter.

PSN is not worth paying for. XBL is so good that it has it's own section at IGN.com

http://xboxlive.ign.com/

So if PSN manages to be so good as XBL and gets its own section at IGN, then thats when you should expect a fee.

I have two thoughts on this... and one has occured just recently.

If MS keeps profiting off of LIVE, and if Sony steps up the PSN to match or at least contend harder with LIVE, then I think they will start charging as long as MS does...

But I also think after LIVE PC being free maybe MS will drop the LIVE cost for consoles. We'll see.

The problem about LIVE is that you basically pay for NOTHING.

Steam does all what LIVE does and its free.

If LIVE had full Dedicated servers, then yes it "could" be worth it paying for.

But right now, its like if I charged you to play real life solitaire with your friends.(Yes, its THAT absurd)

I dont blame Microsoft though, they thought "Lets put a fee and worst case scenario we'll have to remove it"

Amazingly enough, people allowed Microsoft to "rip" them off.

PC gamers didn't fall for it and now Games For Windows Live is free

actually . . . no. the PC gamers are not some kind of master race. :| PC online was free before, ans people were used to that anyway, XBL has been subscription-required from the start. :| that's the reason.

Yes it was, through Steam and Xfire.

But MS thought they could Scam PC owners the same way they could scam 360 owners with Games for Windows Live. PC users didn't fall for it, so MS had to drop the cost. Still, very few people will use it imo, it pales in comparison to Steam...

I would suspect it will depend on how crazy good and how crazy function home becomes.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony opted to try and slip in a small charge for some of the functionality, but who knows?

I wouldn't go that far, as for some folks it may be a lot of money.

Although I do agree that its made far to much of a big deal of among the SW masses, we are basically debating over $3.85 per month in the big picture, and that is less then my Starbucks on the drive into work.

If they are making a big deal over 3.85 a month, then I suspect not many are paying the fifty bucks a month for high speed themselves.

Console online will only be permanently free if they'll allow userland servers (the #1 reason PC online is free), but they'll never allow it for security reasons.

I can't believe people still seriously feel the XBL fees are justified when we can all see how readily Microsoft abandoned the idea on PCs.

At the very least it should teach you that your capable of dictating their policy if you simply exert your power as a consumer.

if $5 is so little how about you just give it to me? ;)

The thing is you're getting charged for something that should be free. What's next, charge us for the air we breathe? Oh it's okay, I have a job.

Dude, why have electric and gas bills? Shouldn't we all have the right to light and heat? This is a capitalist country. That's what they mean by free industry. If you can get people to pay for a service then fine.

What live is don't is different. We already pay for the internet, console and games. Why should we then have to pay to play the games online?

That's the equivelent of paying the electicity bill, paying for a lamp and light bulb, and then being told that access to the switch that turns it on it $50 a year

What?

When you buy a subscription card you get 12 months + 1 free month.

PSN gonna cost money when Home launches. Just you wait...

Also, with the advent of MAG (Which will reputably be a PtP MMO-type game) then a credit system will most likely be put in place (MS Points, anyone?) and an omnipresent monthly fee will most likely follow.

After all, would Sony put a paid usage system in place for MAG And then just leave everything as it is. A credit system will most likely be imperative.

Every business wants to make money.

MS charges for their live simply because it is better.

It has more people, more content, better variety of games, etc.

If PSN matches XBL, and PSN is free, XBL would also be free.

more likely event would be

If psn matches xbl, psn will charge a small price
