What good have the done for PC Gaming this gen? DX11 and Windows 7 is the best and onlyI can think of.

NoodleFighter

I like to think of it more in terms of "What bad things have they done to me?"

Which is basically nothing.

They've provided me with Windows 7, they'll be providing me with a new MS Flight Simulator in the near future, and they've released a few games on PC.

Not only that, but they've actually given the rights to create games in their franchises to developers who want to make them. We'll be getting Mech Warrior Online this year. That's not something I'm angry about.

Games For Windows Live, Windows Vista, Halo 2 Vista only..................

Remedy had to BEG to get Alan Wake on PC the platform it was originally designed for since Microsoft decided to be a **** and buy it out to be exclusively on Xbox 360.

The pretty much stole Epic Games and LionHead from PC gamers especially epic games being a top teir in PC gaming.

But nearly every gamer buys windows to play PC games and multiple versions of them actually

And Windows is an MS platform

They totally control PC gaming really, DirectX too

loosingENDS

Pc gamer use their system, but MS has no real control over PC gaming, as was evidenced by the failure of Vista and GFWL. That's the price of open platform, once you open your platform you loose any control over it. That said, I do aprecieate all that MS has done for PC gaming in the past.

Well, they did do a lot of damage to pcgaming. Far more than any other company, even Electronic Arts. Still, overall their positive developments outweight all the bad they did.

They dropped PC gaming in favor of the Xbox.

They dropped support for the Xbox as soon as the 360 was announced.

They dropped hardcore gamers (for lack of a better word) in favor of motion controls.

Sure, they are a company and there is nothing wrong with going where the money is (nowadays it seems to be motion controls) but there is also a thing like customer loyalty which MS seems to forget about.

They didn't take PC gamers seriously either with bulletstorm since they pretty much made us wait 4 MONTHS for the demo and the game was released 2 months before that.

So it would be correct to say MS has great influence over pcgaming, but not control over it.

No need to bash on Halo Wars. It was a fine RTS and a damn good attempt at bringing RTSs to consoles. The fact that it sold well and still has an extremely active community says something. But yeah Microsoft can suck it on the PC side. Have you seen the business model they have for Age of Empires Online? It's insane: $20 for a civilization, or $100 for a 6 month season pass. No thanks. And Vista sucked ass, like major ass. I never thought I could hate a piece of software as much as I did Vista.AcidSoldner

The situation has been improved though, the 6 month pass has turned into a 2 year pass and the 20 bucks for a civ was changed into 10$ because of the massive amount of complaints.

But eventhough I am a huge Age of Empires fan I still don't like AoE:O as much as I did the other games, they should come up with a true sequel or a sequel to Age of Mythology.

Umm..what? They were one of the biggest and best pc publishers around and they killed everything pc-related they had. For many years it was so bad that they were actually the least pc-friendly publisher around. Even Sony was more pro-Pc than MS was.

So they definitely did drop PC gaming in favor of Xbox. Fortunatelly that seems to be changing nowadays.

Absolute control indeed, they dont have, but do indirectly make customers buy windows eventually, all those that have XP, had something else before as well and will eventually move to windows 8 since most games will support DX11 next gen

And Windows are an MS platform, nearly all PC games game on a platform from Microsoft

Umm...Flight Simulator, Dungeon Siege, Zoo Tycoon, Links...all million selling IPs. Not to mention dozens of other smaller titles that still brought a lot of profit.

MS has been hindering PC gaming since forever by monopolizing the industry. There's no space for real competition so, software wise, the evolution of the market depends on one company: Microsoft.

To be honest, without them PC gaming would never grow to be a huge market though. Games are costly to make, so fragmentation kills the market. iOS vs Android is best example of that.

Flight simulator

Mech Commander

Mech Warrior

Freelancer

Rise of Nations

Crimson Skies

Zoo Tycoon :P

What I mean by dropped is: they made their studios focus exclusivly on making games for Xbox and 360 instead of PC.

Look at Rare for example, they are now focusing soley on Kinect.

Now look at Sony are they completely dropping PS3 support in favor of the Vita ? No they are not.

That's not even close to controlling PC gaming. Every few years they offer a better software which customers decide to either buy or not. They control the Xbox. For example Everyone is free to make a game for windows without paying anything or obeying to any rule from MS. Not the same for Xbox. You can use whatever download portal like steam, GoG, Origin and MS can't stop you. You are not forced to pay any fee to MS for those services. Again not the same for xbox. Use every peripheral and hardware you want. Do whatever you want to the game (modding,Hacking) and again MS can't stop you. You just purchase the OS from MS and that's all.

As far as I'm concerned very low. And I loved Microsoft's initiative in the 90s; then their priorities shifted completely, to the extent of being detrimental to gaming on their OS. But hey, now they are slowly starting to give a damn, despite PC gaming having moved well beyond what they were part of, so if they want to be involved or don't it doesn't really matter; PC gaming will continue to excel in doing its own thing.

Standarization is not the same as no competition. If any it is Microsoft who is anti-standarization by supporting proprietary protocols and APIs on PC that only work on their systems and actively hindering cross-platform efforts. With a healthy dose of competition those cross platform standards can become the norm and, therefore, standarization would actually be possible.

Clearly never heard of prioritization and forecasting

They usually forecast based on current trend what sells and where, they then focus on these areas first they then focus on these as they are essentially the key demographics.

In the case of bulletstorm it may have been forecast (taking previous trends into account) that it might not sell aswell, so thus less money is poured into that version.

Simple rule of thumb why invest more into a platform that has a high chance of not selling more.

Lionhead were meh anyway, they never made a good game except black and white 1

Bullfrog was god tier, not so much Lionhead

Epic were okay, Unreal was a good Quake clone, UT99/2004 were good, but thats it

MS only stole Remedy and Ensemble from PC gamers

Example of Android proves you're wrong. Big business needs standarization to succeed.

Even if you allow standarized protocols the standarization level among several platforms will never reach the level achieved by single one, even if it uses proprietary protocols and AI.
you can argue Microsoft's monopoly is bad for OS development, but there's no denying it's great for people who actualy write the software for those OS.

Its not stealing, its called buisness, might be wise for you to read up and spec up aswell as getting a more mature outlook on the industry.

It's all down to money aswell, they arent charities, they arent your best friend, someone offers you money and they say jump you say how high.

razgriz_101

Well duh but they pretty much ruined their current relationship with PC Gamers and some are even tempted to beat the crap out of Cliffy B. for what he said.

Does being a business excuse being a dickhead to certain group of gamers?

Clearly never heard of prioritization and forecasting

They usually forecast based on current trend what sells and where, they then focus on these areas first they then focus on these as they are essentially the key demographics.

In the case of bulletstorm it may have been forecast (taking previous trends into account) that it might not sell aswell, so thus less money is poured into that version.

Simple rule of thumb why invest more into a platform that has a high chance of not selling more.

Who said they had to invest more into PC then consoles? Just treat them as equals or very close to it

Seriously is making a specific group of gamers on a platform what 2 months later for a demo AFTER LAUNCH really going to help your sales?

Could be but that's not necessarily good for the customers. When the browser monopoly was broken and IE got competition the browser technology thrived. Before it basically relied on Microsoft's pace and we needed something like Firefox to realize how backwards and stuck it was. The same arguments you're using could be used for any industry. People could say we only need one car maker since that would pretty much standardize every car part to the fullest and make life easier to part makers but then again that would suck for the consumer.

Ha! True that . I did remember black & white in early 2000s and was hoping for them to evolve in better devs. But alas Peter killed them single-handedly.

Who knows. Lionhead didn't suck at first. Black & White might not have fulfilled all the expectations, but it was genuinelly enteraining and fresh game. THe problem is that huge ammount iof Bullfrog talent left Lionhead and while Peter is amazing, he alone just isn't enough.

I'm still happy with FSX and that game is over five years old. We'll see how Flight shapes up. The only thing I might ask of MS is consider making a new Combat Flight Simulator. Other than that plus Direct X, Windows and Office, I'm fine.

I rather see my other games from 3rd parties. If MS starts controlling other genres, it'll have total control of lock, stock, and barrel. Then there'll be the whole monopoly lawsuit mess again.

If you want MS to bend you over, there's the 360.
