Poll How many of you believe VR is the next big thing? (99 votes)

It's going to be the next big leap since the internet 28%
It has potential, but will only have moderate results 42%
It's garbage.. it's a gimmick, a fad that will die out..ect. 29%

I believe it's going to be the next technological advancement.

Wont be long before we start seeing these in cafes, most homes ect

But, unfortunately it will have its gripes and criticisms because I know there is a special little crowd out there that is completely oblivious to what's happening.

All great things were doubted.

It's great, but it needs some improvements like higher resolution display and lighter/smaller headsets.

I'm hoping it does well and gets decent support, but I doubt it'll change the way we play games forever and ever or however companies are claiming it'll change gaming

To me, I lump VR in the same vein as PS Move and Kinect. I had zero interest in those two things when Sony and MS tried to compete with the Wii's motion controller and I have no interest in PSVR.

I don't think there is a next big thing. People like gaming on a TV with a controller.

VR is too expensive to ever become a mainstream product. Buying something like the Playstation VR is similar to buying a light gun for your Sega Genesis. Sure, there are one or two games that you will have fun playing, but in the end, it's just going to sit in your closet. The only chance it really has to catch the mainstream market is if it is incorporated into a console at launch, which would be a huge risk at this point. Maybe if the tech advances far enough to be acceptable at a $400 price point including the console, it could work.

I do think VR tech is very cool, and I do think it has potential to take off if somebody goes all in with a VR console. I just sort of doubt that ever happens.

It's definitely not a gimmick. In the future it could really be something. I enjoy my PS VR. The problem right now is the lack of full games. There's several experiences, but not much full games like Resident Evil 7 for example.

I don't think it can be THE next thing until a whole lot of technological breakthroughs including medical science so that people can experience it without getting sick and also the blind can see.

That being said, I do 100% believe that it is here to stay this time. It is a thing, now.

It's the next big step in gaming for sure. With more support in the future, better displays, and as costs come down it will take off. I used to doubt VR until I tried PSVR and Vive. Both HMDs have opened my eyes to the huge potential of VR, things can only go up from here. VR legitimately adds to gaming and education and isn't a gimmick like motion controls.

It needs to mature, evolve a little more, become cost effective and above all else needs some proper dev support. Over all though VR and AR are the future of gaming if the companies at the heart of it can keep it going.

Right now, I'll say it has potential

this iteration is kind of a flop. hardware is too costly, bulky and has too much shovelware. Not to mention the devs eatting each other with the big lawsuit.

I can see it actually catching on in the future when the hardware gets smaller and better though.

I think its much more likely a combination of VR/AR and flexible displays actually takes off more than straight VR.

on the hardware side i think many outstanding issues will be solved by the end of the year. i mean the Vive has a wireless module now which apparently works pretty well. so its no longer tehtered to the PC. it is critical that this becomes standard accross the board.

but it needs to get cheaper (hopefully this will improve too) and, most importantly, it needs more content and a killer app. at the moment there is still the sense that developers are just toying with it at the moment. it really needs a wii sports/halo/gran turismo style "holy crap i have to play this no matter what" ttile to draw people. it needs a killer app and it needs more complete games.

it could be a big part of the future of gaming. im excited for it and am hoping to have a vive by the end of the year. even just playing the likes of F1 would be nearly worth the entry fee alone. everyone i know who has tried it says its amazing. but at the moment there isnt a lot there and the price to get into it is very high.

It would be if it weren't so expensive / people would be willing to pay for it. Experiences you have in VR are unlike anything anyone ever experienced, movies like Allumette show perfectly how much potntial story-telling in VR has. But as long as people are poor or blind to new tech, creators won't dive deeper into it

This board makes my head hurt almost daily. People literally throw history, logic and reason out the window and just defend the box they have in their house. It seem like 90% of this board is incapable of saying anything positive about things they don't own, while at the same time bashing the hell out of other things they also don't own. "Gamers" are reaching sports fanatic levels of insanity. The day a person gets beaten to a pulp for wearing a Playstation, Xbox or Nintendo shirt we will know we're there.

I think there are sales caps when it comes to price but people have shown time and time again they will pay ALOT of money for things they want.

VR is not going to take over, but it is a viable way to experience entertainment differently. It is already impressive and not a gimmick. The tech and experiences will continue to improve and it will become more affordable over time.

The thing you have to understand about VR is its connection to beast technology. VR is nothing new, nor is it temporary. The military industrial complex has been using it for a very long time now for purposes of mind manipulation and processing within ranks of soldiers. The Super Soldier program is real, and it utilizes VR tech to degrees that the common public is not made aware of. The headsets you see on the market now are but early models of devices and techniques that are 20-30 years ahead of what the public knows about. This is the way of all "modern" technology. The majority of the people are kept in the dark, receiving only trickles of information at a time. Beast technology is, among other things, technology that invades the barrier of flesh, and even bone. There is a time envisioned where the barrier is crossed absolutely. VR is being utilized, as of present, to get people accustomed to that idea--the idea of accepting permanent violation of their bodies. If you look over western media alone for the last 30, 40 years you will see that VR and the like has been advertised throughout that span in various ways in select television shows, movies, news, etc. Before the headsets of last year arrived, on a certain level you already knew about them. You were expecting them.

VR is cool but the problem is the lack of that uniquely benefit from it. You don't need VR for the vast majority of games that are made for it. This makes it a useless addon. Until devs make games that can only be realized in VR its going to be viewed as an expensive play thing.

When you type something about new tech it's a good idea to consider: 'would someone 500 years ago have said the same thing about their tech?' Because if they would have, you're probably not taking into consideration why things change.

I think you should see it mainly as a new screen tech. Not as some miracle. And the glasses we see today are just one step along the way of gamers adopting VR tech. It will likely become better over time, and this big step they made last year is pretty good. It's interesting tech that richer consumers can buy. It provides an experience unlike we've ever seen before. I don't see some competitive tech replacing it any time soon. So in that sense I expect that it will be a big thing in gaming. I don't understand the notion that it's not good enough for a technology to provide something superior in ways. It's like a new tech needs to divide gaming in two, or that it needs to generate game mechanics that depend on that technology, before it's seen as something that changes gaming. The act of gaming is changed by VR and if it's as cool as people say it is, I do expect it to get bigger than it is today.

VR is just an evolution of Motion Controls.

It won't have a great effect until it's below $200 and comes with a Track Pad for movement.

It is a clue. It is connected. What I share in this reply, and what I've shared before it, is all connected. VR technology is of the family, so to speak, of the art of manipulative, invasive mental programming. I won't do your homework for you, but, if I am right in inferring you have some level of interest in the matter, I will offer you something more. A word of caution: taking the clues I give you here, and following them with your own research and uncovering more clues, and then, eventually, discovering a pattern, will bring about a rift in your perception of the world around you; that rift, if you choose to continue digging, will turn into a chasm. Your life will change. But you have to open your eyes first. If you want more information, I can provide. Again, though, I will not do your homework for you.

Loading Video...

This is a much longer listen. If you get through it, by the end I suggest sitting down and letting the information settle in your mind. Try not to jump to hasty conclusions. This is just a starting point.

First of all, anybody that calls VR a gimmick has not tried good VR yet. There are some VR experiences that are gimmicky, but I have not seen anybody that has actually experienced room-scale VR on the Vive and then called it a gimmick. Room-scale VR is amazing and it's something that is impossible to understand how awesome it really is until you have experienced it.

As for whether or not VR is the next big thing, that depends on what you mean by "the next big thing". Do I think VR will ever completely replace traditional gaming on a TV with a controller? No, I don't. But I do think VR is here to stay and it will continue to grow in popularity as an alternative gaming experience and for many uses outside of gaming as well as the technology continues to mature and the price becomes more affordable over time.

At this point, based on what I've heard, I'm still not sure.

Hopefully it will become more clear once we have big AAA games supporting it.

Needs to be more affordable, needs more high quality content, needs higher quality components (mainly the screen/screens). It has great potential though.

Threads like this make me really go: Wtf? I haven't seen anyone on my friends list use theirs since buying them.

VR already came and went. It failed. Barely anybody bought them, there are no killer apps (devs aren't interested in developing big titles for them), and truth be told nobody really cares about VR besides a small community of nerds on the internet who convinced themselves that everybody loves VR. Time to move on nerds.
