20 years ago, the NES was the thing people had, and was legendary. But this was before 3D gameplay, rumble packs, and online connectivity. Now that we have just about all of it today (online play, almost completely realistic graphics, and near-real sound) - do you think video games could improve? The video games from 20 years ago we look at today and simply feel speechless about how much they have improved technologically. But 20 years from now, do you think we'll say the same thing about the vintage Xbox 360 in the days of the PlayStation 6 and Nintendo Silicon?

well you probably mean more motion sensing technology right? yea that hasn't taken full stage yet with the wii you still have to use a controller and your body itself isn't used in that manner yet

Graphics are cool, but it's all about AI now. With mutli-core processors (Like Intel's Core 2 Duo, and the 360's multicore cpu), developers can write very complex AI and have one of the multiple CPU's do most the work. Give me an enemy who thinks, and you have a game I want to enjoy.

A machine that sends images, sound and other senses directly into the brain allowing for complete virtual reality.

And ending Earth as we know it because nobody will leave their machines.

well i wouldn't say ALL about AI cause for multiplayer games we now have online play to eliminate the need for AI

Multiplayer does not negate single player. What I mean, is that just because we can shoot at each other, doesn't exactly make it an enriching experience. The first time I played Halo CE on Legendary, I was blown away by both the intelligence and firepower of the enemy. AI is the way to make gaming interesting again. Gears graphics are great, but it's very straight forward when it comes to gameplay. Devs can do a heck of a lot with AI.

i dunno what you mean by that because video games already do that - when things happen in the game such as a chainsaw revving behind you in Gears of War, it gives you a sense of danger and sends a message to your brain to run away and quickly turn around and shoot at the chainsaw enemy before you die

I think video games could get better, but I don't really see the need. With the 16 bit gen, obviously we needed 3d textures, with the ps1/n64 gen the graphics were muddy and blocky (generally), but with the GC/XBox/PS2 gen I think it got to the point i didn't think we needed much more. I think the next gen might be a ceiling in terms of graphical advancements, audio has been fine since the introduction of 5.1, and AI is one of those things 75% of people don't notice and don't care about, so it is gonna be on the developers to continue giving us fresh ideas.

I guess I'm behind the times on this one, but I don't notice or care about the quality increase from Dvd to HDDVD/Bluray, and I'm afraid soon enough the advancements in game systems is gonna be roughly the same. Either that, or we'll be spending 900 dollars on a system, bleh.

They could get a lot better. Graphics could be a lot better and especially AI. I could imagine amazing things being done with games like RPGs. I'd like to see a lot more originality as well.

Well when networking technology improves so will graphics in online games. Usually developers have to tone down the graphics for online games to prevent lag. Anyways, you guys might be right. While you think very highly of today's graphics and you think they are completely realistic, the years will soon pass and these very same fancy graphics you see in Gears of War, Resistance, and GRAW 2 will be well... outdated!

oh actually one more thing as technology improves so will the amount of data they could economically put in a game - so that games with free-roaming worlds can become larger and more detailed
