Saints Row 2 was more fun. I don't understand all the defending with GTA IV, especially when just a few short months ago people were saying how terrible it is compared to other GTAs and were baffled by the 10 score. Just look at GTA IV. Yeah, the graphics are pretty. However, I think the music selection is one of the worst for a GTA game. The game was completely stripped down from San Andreas, and even has stuff lacking that Vice City had.
Saints Row 2 on the other hand expanded Saints Row's gameplay and world. They added more stuff to the game (fun stuff). What can I do in GTA IV? Go bowling and watch TV? No thanks. I'd rather do Fight Club, Septic Avenger, Mayhem, insurance fraud, drug trafficking side missions on SR2.
Saints Row 2 does look worse than GTA IV and has a lot of pop in. None of this affects the gameplay imo. In terms of framerate, it is bad in certain situations, but isn't too distracting. The missions themselves were a hell of a lot more fun in SR2 than GTA IV. The weapon variety is better too. There are more variety of cars, tons more customization. Oh, and the hidden things are much better in SR2. I'd rather find a tag and a hidden CD than shoot a flying rat and alerting the cops ALMOST EVERY SINGLE time I do so. Why do I need to run for my life when finding hidden things in GTA IV? That sucks.
What about when a cop takes you out of the car? You are instantly busted in GTA IV. No freedom whatsoever to try and run from the cops. You just give up. Not the case in SR2. The loading screens when loading a save file...at least I have a couple of images to watch in SR2 while waiting, unlike GTA IV. It is much more clear in SR2 which doors you can open than in GTA IV. The way points are more clear in SR2. It seems like I strain my eyes to see the green waypoint in GTA IV. The map screen is better in SR2 and easier to navigate and set way points. Bookmarks too. Human shields and throwing people add to the variety in SR2.
It seems clear that SR2 has a lot more stuff to do in the game world. Yeah, it has more pop in and uglier graphics. Do those negatives really make GTA IV, a game with far less to do, a better game?
And as far as the story goes, yeah GTA IV is more polished. But I like some of the characters more in SR2. Shaudi (spelling?) and Gat are cool.
