As we all know, the gaming industry has been on a financial decline ever since this current gen started. Development costs have skyrocketed and the costs don't seem to be going down. As a result, many gaming companies had to file for bankruptcy. It's an extremely sad state of affairs, but I believe that we gamers can work together to solve this mess just like how we solved the DRM issues for the Xbox ONE.

Before we organize ourselves, we must all agree that the continual need for awesome graphics has harmed the finances of the gaming industry. We must promote gameplay over graphics. This is essential.

To show our support for gimping graphics, we need to cancel our PS4 preorders and preorder the Xbox ONE. This will send a message to all console manufacturers as well as developers that graphics don't matter. A weak console means that developers will stress gameplay over graphics, reducing their development time. It is without a doubt that the PS4 is cancerous to the gaming industry, as such a powerful console will only facilitate the rising cost of game development. If SONY ends up winning next gen, then I'm afraid we'll only be left with 2-4 big publishers while all the little guys will be driven out due to soaring costs.

Why do you think that rising dev costs is good for anyone? It harms devs because they can't make money. It harms consumers because there won't be a lot of games to play.

The problem is gamers not buying unique games that aren't indie budget games. As long as COD sells 10 million copies and The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, and puppeteer sell less than a million, then the options will be very limited.

It's pretty much moving towards big budget AAA titles or indie game with the unique surprise every once in a while. I miss going into a game store and just buying whatever game box looked interesting it ending up being awesome.

Pretty funny, pretty damn good satire - especially for sw. 9.5/10.0

OT:

But why not just buy the Wii U? Surely I'm doing my part here with an 'as-new' condition Wii U ... and my modest, 'overworked and underpaid' radeon 7850 (1.76TF).

But I probably won't get PS4 ... or XB1, at least not initially. Am I still helping?

What are you talking about? CoD is one of the few games out there that's saving the gaming industry from a financial collapse. The CoD formula has saved competing devs time and money. Right now, most FPS games are CoD clones like Halo 4 and Killzone 3.

Well, by that logic, we should just buy the NES and stick with that forever.

I think that dev costs should scale well with the power of the console. The Xbone is just right in terms of graphical power and dev cost associated with making games catering to that power. 1.1-1.3 TF is in the okay range for power-dev cost parity. Anything higher will financially strain developers. Anything lower will cause graphical progress to come to a halt.

so what you're saying is the xb1 sits in the goldilocks zone of power?

just the right amount of power for consumer eyes, and the meshes of 3d models to render and what-not?

I personally think a cross platform rights management system would be best, buy a game on PC get the PS and Xbox ports digital access for free, or a slight licensing cost for an all access package, and slowly get rid of used game sales by offering better digital incentives, and stop supplying stores that sell used games with new copies.

The industry, although completely backwards, stupid and inefficient, is not in any trouble and does not need saving. It could use some common sense though
