Well it may be hard to tell, but in case you guys havent realized.....theres a handheld war ensuing! You guys probably dont beleive me, probably wondering how that can be true if there are no Vita vs 3DS topics in the forums then. Thats why im making this thread. I need to make it known!

Sarcasm aside, alot of arguments have been tossed around and a big one against the Vita that ive heard is the "Its just a portable PS3" argument.

To explain in depth what that means, its the philosophy that though Vita has superior technlogy to the 3DS and the ability to play console games, its strengths could indeed actually be its greatest weakness because a handheld designed as such becomes an illogical purchase when a person can just use a PS3 and be completely satisfied. For example, Uncharted golden abyss is extremely stunning, but then when you ask yourself if you are going to rather buy Uncharted Golden Abyss or Uncharted 3, a logical gamer would always chose the console version. By making it seem as if a handheld being close to a console's capabilities is a BAD thing, the 3DS becomes the smarter purchase because its technological inferiority actually becomes a GOOD thing. 3DS may lack the power, but its games are unique handheld experiences.

This is the most unbiased way I can explain the argument. Id rather not take sides and then lose credibility lol.I really want to see what side you guys take tho...is it valid to actually claim Vita's technological power can actually be the reason why a 3DS could be the better buy?? State why of course, wise gamers

Vita is a portable PS3. That means any games on the Vita would be better played on a PS3. It is a pointless handheld device.

I think it's funny that the native resolution of the Vita (960x544) is the same resolution of the PS3 version of Black Ops.

yeah, alot of people keep misunderstanding vita isnt just a portable ps3. its graphics are crazy good for a portable, but in no way will it look as good as u playing uncharted 3 on ur HD tv. And can vita actually handle a game the size of Uncharted 3? Well idk actually lol, but i think too many people assume vita can run anything ps3 can.

Just a portable PS3 is a crap excuse to hate on it. If theres orginal content and even spin off games to a series ala the uncharted game and resistance game that have thier own story and not the same exact story from the console versions then its fine. As time goes on so does tech. So the thought of a handheld not getting nicer graphics down the line is just insanity.

Plenty of games would be better as console versions. 3DS games included. Console games could be better presentations if they were on PC. It doesn't really matter what it could be, because games count for the platform that they're on. Good games on the Vita are good games, regardless.

well, im not taking sides like i said, but what i dont get is why people keep saying that if the 3DS only has TWO N64 remakes. Its not like Nintendo is the only one porting, at least a quarter of the games coming for Vita are just console games miniaturized for the vita. Are we really supposed to applaud that as a good effort? IDK, i think its easy to port, but its harder to actually make something unique and brand new. Nintendo AND Sony are guilty of taking an easy road or two

Well considering the all the ports/multiplats we've been seeing so far, I'd say it's pretty valid. PS Vita will get new games obviously, just not as much as you'd hope for.

If it's just copying the PS3 then theres no point other than the portability factor and that just isn't enough to sustain a good gaming handheld. It has to have it's own games, it has to have a reason to be called PS Vita and I need a reason to own one next to a PS3.

You explained what I have been thinking for a while now.

We are going to see a bunch of PS3 to Vita ports or games that are/near exactly the same on both platforms. Is this a bad thing?

Well to me yes. I want a Unique experience, not a dumbed down or near-similar experience I can get on another platform.

This is why I want next-gen consoles to take different roads. No more, its just about exclusive games. More like, an exclusive experience. =) Traditional gaming will always be best on my PC. Consoles should do other things, this includes handheld consoles. Each platform has their unique experiences.

Of course, the Vita can easily get exclusive unique games for its platform. Let's hope =) they are the majority.

Not taking sides? Lol.

There's a dearth of these so called "unique" experiences on either new handheld. There's a lot of ports on either new handheld. There's a lot of new installments of old franchises on either handheld.

So far it seems pretty valid. I think I heard at TGS that one of the devs said "This is a portable PS3 experience!", and I have a PS3... and I never play games outside of my bedroom... so until the Vita does something to impress me it won't be getting my money.

So far, pretty valid, just like 3DS is a lot like a Portable N64/PS2 at it best, however, its way too early to judge both systems.

well thats the reason i didnt buy vita personally. I already have the PS3. I look at lbp on vita and it looks just like the lbp2 i already paid 60 bucks for. I saw its getting MGS hd and realized it would probs look better on my TV. 3DS was a good choice for me because I know i dont want a nintendo console and the 3DS will compensate for that...... Hoenstly, when it comes down to it, ive come to the conclusion the best handheld to get for urself is from the maker u dont have a console from. because we can then argue the philosophy of this topic, and couldnt we then also say, if u have wii u AND 3DS, that mariokart is better on wii u? Well im not getting wii u, so 3ds was the good purchase for me.

I'm as equally uninterested in the 3DS as well though. For all the fancy graphical upgrades that both systems have pushed from their predecessors, their lineups look rather... boring so far. It is rather a bit early to make any final judgements so for now I'll continue to hold onto my DS Lite but once of the systems has a more promising lineup I won't hesitate to trade it in. :P

im not a portable gamer and one of the biggest reasons is the desire for portables games to play like console games. it wont happen. a little screen in the palm of my hand is never going to have the same experience as a big HDTV. you can get accessories to support output to tv's, but that only downplays the necessity of a handheld device. portables designed to "be like consoles" are a step in the wrong direction for me.

thats not to say that portables cant do their own types of games in a special way. the vita is making more steps in that direction than the psp with the touch screen. its a simple input that has a different effect on a handheld game than a console one. the act of touching the lone display on the hardware as an input is more of a direct experience than a touch screen for a console gamepad would be.

If I can enjoy VC1 on PS3 then I can enjoy VC2 on PSP. Sure it's not on PS3, but its a great game and shouldn't be disregarded because it's like a console game. That's how I feel. VC3 is a broken mess though. The people begging for it have no idea what they're asking for.

What I don't understand is why a portable PS3 would be a bad thing. You're right, it's not much of an argument. Your very reason for not liking it may very well be the reason I do like it. I hate being tied to a TV, so being able to play PS3 on the go is pretty cool to me.

I believe the entire reason the Vita exists is to give Japanese developers a second platform to develop games for in Japan other than Nintendo. I'm sure Sony hopes for the majority of Japan-released games to be Playstation-exclusive, and if the Vita takes off in the west then perhaps it'll translate into Japanese developers developing exclusively for those systems on a world-wide scale as well. I'm sure we'll see a ton of Vita/PS3 titles after it launches.

I'm not going to use the ad hominem fallacy to deny the validity of the argument. I don't agree with the argument that the perception of a PS3 on the go is a negative nonetheless.

I'm just somewhat incredulous at the claim of anyone on here of being unbiased or not taking sides, this thread has a clear slant to it intentional or subconscious.

I personally don't buy into this nonsense about "handheld games" vs "console games." A good game is a good game regardless.

Both handhelds have straight ports of old games, multiplatform releases, new installments of older franchises and brand new IPs for them. But in both cases the amount of the last is few relative to the other groups.

Not taking sides? Lol.

well everytime i start a topic and take sides, people take jabs at me and start trying to destroy the validity of my argument by labelling me as a fanboy.....im tired of it haha, i start topics to hear what other people say, so thats just what im gonna do....im honestly indifferent a bit. I already chose to buy 3DS, and when i have the funds i suppose ill get Vita but im not gonna start extrapolating and making wild claims about the future that nobody truly knows anything about. Ive done that before and it gets nowhere lol

But in both cases the amount of the last is few relative to the other groups.

well if u do see a slant we will go with subconcious hahaha. We can at least say i TRIED not to take sides haha. but yeah ur makinga very fair point, people point to the other side what may be bad about them but in truth perhaps everyone is doing a bit of everything lol. Both sides are porting, it may be fair to say both sides want some sort of portable console experience (whether it be n64 or ps3)...like any system wars topic, its always gonna be relative as to which side is better

Yes the Vita has too much power. That's why it will lose the handheld war ... whoever says that is an idiot, there is nobody stopping anyone from making ugly looking games on the system.

So by your logic crappier graphics is better experience ? I for one think 3DS is garbage even at $170 bucks, and i do want a console experience on the run, why should i wait to play Uncharted till i get home when i can play it on those long breaks at college ?

It's really impossible to eliminate biases and preferences from a place like this that's designed to exacerbate them. I myself try to be able to step back and be able to play devil's advocate or analyse things on as objective a level as I can, but then preferences and biases will always influence perspectives.

Anyway having a look at both software line-ups (just via their Wiki pages 3DS / PSP ) basically confirms how few new IPs there are on either system.

On the 3DS the standouts to me are Time Travelers, Bravely Default and Beyond the Labyrinth. There may be some smaller new IPs I haven't noticed, and people are free to point them out to me.

On the PSV the standouts to me are Gravity Daze, Escape Plan, SumiOni and Dragon's Crown. But there are smaller new IPs like Little Deviants and Sound Shapes.

Sure, people can call it a ps3 portable but it's gunning out more original content such as gravity zero and escape plan, among many others. Where as that postable64 with cheap 3-d is just coming out with remake after remake.

The problem is that Dragons Crown is not Vita exclusive, it is also on my PS3

While i cant get these 3DS games anywhere else

Plus Bravely Default looks so stunning, that i would get any system to play it and is a huge card in 3DS side

I don't see how being a portable ps3 is a bad thing...plus it's getting many unique games of its own like sound shapes and gravity daze.

Watch this magic trick...

Vita is a portable PS3. That means any games on the Vita would be better played on a PS3. It is a pointless handheld device.

mmmwksil

Even if that is true, Sony will still get my money as long as they're able to give me exclusive experiences such as Dissidia/J-RPGs that I won't be able to get ton the 3DS. So for me, its not so pointless ^_^b

I can say the same and for the 3DS....any games on the 3DS would be better played on a N64/PS3/XBOX360/Wii/WiiU/PSVita.At least the PSVita it have HD graphics and 2 analogs and many good new games(Bioshock,Uncharted: Golden Abyss,Little Deviants,Escape Plan,Little King Story Sequel,Shinobido 2,SumiOni,Army Corps of Hell,Gravity Daze).Today the best 3DS games is just a N64 remake "Zelda OoT" and a port "Super Street Fighter IV"....

I think it's funny that the native resolution of the Vita (960x544) is the same resolution of the PS3 version of Black Ops.

Tikeio
Wait... So then why is the MGS HD Collection still called HD for the Vita version?
