Fascinating article from Edge Magazine (link below) that analyzes the fact that Sony owns by far the most in-house game development studios and resources.

My question is this: with 3rd party exclusives becoming nearly extinct, how can Microsoft keep up long term with Sony exclusives when Sony has way more development resources?

Sony's studios are now definately coming into their own. Just look at the last 6 months (Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, MLB 09 The Show, Motor Storm, etc) and the next 12 months (Infamous, Uncharted 2, M.A.G., Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank, GOD OF WAR 3, Turismo 5, etc, etc).

I seriously want to know from Xbox fanboys... how will MS compete with this? And I don't think the occasional throwing of money around for exclusive DLC such as GTA is the answer...

I own both consoles, and I am definately much more excited about what Sony is doing right now and think the long term prospects for Sony software is much more promising...

I don't think MS needs "to compete" with it. Being most games this gen multiplat, and with a lower price, MS is safe, imo.

maybe not in sales, but if microsoft keeps this up the PS3 will surpass the 360 in terms of quality exclusives

That sounds like complete and utter BS to me. I paid $400 for my 360, and to support it for 3 years and give up is terrible.

The 360 will be coming out with great exclusives this fall, like it does every year. There is no need to have in house studios if you've outsourced games to others.

They can't and won't, I think they're happy enough with timed exclusives and having the cheapest console that plays all the big multiplats.

i'm not sure what we're talking about to be honest. All i do know is that sales wise microsoft doesn't need to compete with the PS3 but as a consumer microsoft needs to bring it up a notch as far as exclusives go, i just hope that they are preparing an awsome E3

Well, when talking about the big three "competing", I always associate that with sales. After all, that's what companies compete for. And about the consumer part -nah-, with all the multiplats (PC/PS3) I'm more than happy this year. That's just me, though.

No, it will. Sure, the 360 is doing really great for a company that's pretty much still in its infancy in the console industry. Sony's games are getting better and better each gen. And IMO, since about March this year, the PS3 has had far better games and its only getting better. But none of that matters because SW is all about sales apparently.

Any console needs new games (that's kinda obvious). And the 360 is getting a lot of them. Just not so many exclusives. But still it's getting a plethora of awesome multiplats.

I think the key thing to remember in this conversation is just how rare 3rd party exclusives have become. Knowing this, it really puts MS at a disadvantage in terms of exclusive software since they simply don't have the in-house resources that Sony does.

With this in mind, I fully expect Sony to dominate the quality exclusives category from here on out...

It depends on what happens. PS3 sales are spiking in Japan, so if they use that success to help it compete in NA, the 360 may have more to compete against from Sony. While it would still take awhile for Sony to own this gen against MS, it could happen. But let's first see what Sony's planning in the first place. We should be able to see their plans at E3.

  1. Hype and marketing for Halo and Gears every holiday , and other titles + XBL
  2. $$$$$$$$ for exclusives , exclusive DLC , timed exclusivity
  3. Live off the price advantage and multiplats
  4. Games and services for more casual gamers

Well by that list that would tell me not to get a 360 if that is MS business plan for its consoles. While I see Sony's plan and that is to have plenty of 1st and 2nd party dev teams to keep a steady flow of new ip's coming across to living things up all the time.

Hmm buy a console that only half of the games are on it, or buy a console that has all of the multiplates aswell as a huge in house library?

"Half the games"? That's kinda exaggerated. The 360 has its fair ammount of quality exclusives. Besides, the PS3 misses games, too (Gears of War, Mass Effect, L4D, for example). Price is another factor.

If that's all true, then why should I get a 360? There are only 5-6 games I'm interested in for the 360, I have about 10 for my PS3, and counting. I don't wanna be a fanboy, but I don't wanna be scammed, either. Hopefully Sony can get MS to compete with it so MS can get more games, giving me more reason to buy a 360 for all its great games. But right now, I'd rather not. It doesn't sound too promising.

If they pick up the right kinds of content (which I'm sure they will) ..... they won't have any problems competing with Sony's games. What do they really have to worry about - Halo 3 ODST , GTA IV DLC , Splinter Cell Conviction , Mass Effect 2 , Forza 3 ,APB , Alan Wake , LO 2 , Rare games , Lost Planet 2 timed , and tons of obamaian rpgs that won't be on ps3. And that's just the likely stuff.

Well sales come down to who has the biggest install base for multiplats but if MS doesn't invest in any studios then I won't by a 360 or their next console. I don't buy consoles for multiplats.

No, I understand that the 360 gets plenty of games, even a bunch the ps3 doesn't get. But alot of them are the exact ones that the majority don't want if they were on any system. MS just pushes way to many of those games out of the door before the cooking timer is up, or just games that really no one except a select few even care about. Not to say that there all bad but MS is treading in the domain of being considered shovel ware king.

I would love to see MS to come out with more games that have that console influence to them. To many of their games just feel or look like pc games. Hard to explain that feeling but thats what I've gotten when playing some of there games.

I don't think Microsft can keep up with the quality exclusives. This isn't a fanboyish statement, if you look at Sonys assets compared to Microsoft its an easy victory. I'm sure Microsft isn't fussed though. I think as long as they advertise all the big multi-plats on their system and keep the price competetive they should be fine.

Sales wise, Sony is the one falling far behind. Games wise, Sony hasn't released anything this year that MS should be scared about. Killzone and MLB 09 the show are great and everything but I hardly call2 gamesanything worth going nuts about and saying MS is doomed. Lets wait for E3, then we can all judge.

depending on what kind of gaming experience you want you may end up paying more or the same money for xbox 360 than the ps3

so lower price can be misleading example would be the xbox live card and for those that cant set up their xbox 360 with a wired connection then you pay more money to play online so depending on what you need to play the xbox360 is not always going to be the lower price and it ends up being the same price as or more than aps3

and if people budget out what they need they could end up supresed they can get a ps3 and not settle for the xbox360 thinking its cheaper

but ms is not in trouble the system still has a bigger online community, halo still has a big fanbase and multi plat games will sell more on the xbox360 which means more players online with the miltiplat games than on the ps3 version of that game

it will take sony a long time before ms has to worry

As far as MS goes, they are doing an excellent job, a job Sony did in the past and succeeded with it for the PS1 and PS2, securing third party exclusives, either timed or permanent and making the famous big guns for the PS brand multiplat thats great if you ask me and they are bringing great first party exclusives too.

I would LOVE a 360 price drop influenced by a PS3 price drop. If that really happens, then I will TOTALLY get a 360!:D If it drops to $100, it's DEFINITELY affordable!

i think MS are taking a different path for exclusive development on the 360. instead of having lots of in house developers, they will basically outsource exclusive development to 3rd parties like epic and bungie. combine that with exclusive deals for extra content for the big games.....i think thats what there up to. i think MS have come to conclusion that there not a game development company....there a service and system software development company. let those who know what there doing go ahead and do it and MS will provide the platform and tools to make it as easy and as efficent as possible. although in saying that...they did buy a developer recently.....i wonder are they going to use them to make games or come up with ideas and then liason with 3rd parties to make those ideas a reality?

Microsoft will continue to do what they've always done. Acquire more studios and purchase the hottest titles as timed exclusive. That has worked well for them in the past, so I'm sure they will do that in the future.

I would LOVE a 360 price drop influenced by a PS3 price drop. If that really happens, then I will TOTALLY get a 360!:D If it drops to $100, it's DEFINITELY affordable!NYrockinlegend
It took the PS2 9 years to get to 100, and your saying the 360 will get to $100 in 3.5 years. No not happening!

well MS has a big wallet, when worse comes to worse they could always throw a lot of money to publishers to make them exclusives or port a game. Also 360 is doing fine against sony ATM,
