[QUOTE="Nega3"]Because for the most popular console genres (FPS, action, etc.) a tablet is just annoying and unnecessary. I mean what is the tablet going to tell you....your health and ammo?I like the idea of tablets as controllers.
I don't get why everyone is going to skip the console if it happens.
KC_Hokie
I was cynical at first, but it's Nintendo man.
I think it would be great!
I really don't understand what gamers have against the potential for games to be better.
I do understand the dislike of the Wiimote. It really isn't suited well for certain genres that are typically found on consoles, and some people just don't like motion controls. I get that.
But how people fail to see the potential of a controller with the standard buttons plus tablet functionality is beyond me.
Could one of you haters please explain what would make it bad?
All I'm seeing is "I would laugh my ass off", "I would avoid the console", "I would wait for a real controller"...
Please give some concrete reasons of what makes this idea bad.

tablets fail hardcore genres for many reasons
1) they in no way contour to your hand. its just flat. so essentially its a keyboard with fewer inputs and without the addition of a mouse for precision
2) aiming by pointing with your fingers in TPS and FPS games is a complete joke
3) racing controls become horrendous
4) anything which involves exploring a 3d environment becomes awkward as hell, due to imprecise movement controls
i could go on.

I don't think were talking about standard tablets here. Were talking aboult a controller with a touchscreen display. It's not flat and it has buttons.

Who said a tablet controller cant have analogs?
Who said the flat design is bad, and even if so, who said it had to be flat?

1) all reports say it is comfortable, and if you look at pictures of the back it does contour to your hands. The fact that your hands are furthur apart does not affect the ergonomics either, and the controller is not heavy.
2) 3) it has dual analogs for conventional controls, and the tablet can then be used for quick reference of game menus, maps, or whatever else devs can think of.

Oh if he thought I meant a standard tablet then of course it would suck! Haha.
Tablet = Stupid idea
So ps4 = awful controller
The way gaming should go is the wii-mote. The wii-mote actually improves tons of gameplay mechanics over traditional games. What does a tablet improve? It forces you to look at the screen while looking at the tv. It is distracting, it doesn't improve anything, and nearly broken. I can't think of one think that DS does better with two screens. Look at elite beat agents. If it was on one screen instead of two, the game would be better. A tablet is a stupid idea that has made wii-u completely uninteresting to me. Nothing is better with a clunky control that makes the device less interactive.
I think it would be pretty cool. Knowing sony, they would never do that though. I think they learned their lesson from the ps3 about expensive hardware...
It'll probably be better than whatever MS will be doing though next gen. I used to be very biased towards MS, since they had a lot going for them early on. But all this kinect bs is stating to wear thin on me. If they keeping pushing it next gen, I'll be happy to purchase the playstation-U
If the PS4 had a Wii type controller as their main controller, I would still skip the PS4. There is a reason I will not being buying the moved bundled PS3 when I get my PS3. I don't like motion controls. If all consoles go that rate, I will stick to PC.Tablet = Stupid idea

That's just one example, and you could look to the DS for all the creative ways that a supplementary touch screen can add to the experience. Plus, even if it were just item mapping, couldn't games adjust to that ability and make games where quick access to items is expected? The lack of processing power of the wiiU will likely keep me from buying it but I am very curious to see what the tablet adds.[QUOTE="AmazonTreeBoa"][QUOTE="nhh18"]

I still don't understand why people hate the wii-mote. It is by far the most immersive controller ever made. I guess it isn't new or fresh anymore and we have to hae stupid gimmicks nowadays for stuff to sell. First wiifit, next kinect, now wii-u controller.
nhh18
I disagree with your views on the WiiU controller. Maybe I have too much of an active imagination, but I see great potential for it. You dont lose the functionality of a standard controller, but only gain a touch screen that could be used in so many different ways.
As for the Wiimote hate? Its a combination of two things.
1. Most haters never even gave it a fair chance. I remember people had a tough time adjusting to dual analogs, but they simply had to in order to keep gaming and the hate went away. People that don't feel instantly at home with motion controls just run back to what they know.
2. Developers failed. There are only a hand full of games that really show that the Wiimote is in fact an evolution in controls. I remember after my first go with Metroid Prime 3 I went to play a PS3 game and felt so limited. The DS3 just felt archaic. Unfortunately, too many developers treated the Wiimote as a gimmick rather than embracing it and developing software to take advantage.
I think the issue falls on the shoulders of developers more than gamers.

I'd like to see a stealth game in the vein of MGS3 were you hold the controller in front of you and look "through" it for night vision, thermal vision, binoculars, sniper scope, etc.
This would not only just be cool, but it would free up your other equips/controls for other useful items/weapons, thus improving the game imo.
Of course I'm no game designer, so I'm sure they can think of much better ideas.

Well done for changing my opinion.
I'd be inclined not to buy it; I want a game controller, not a freakin IPAD...

How about a game controller with all the same buttons you're used to, plus a touch screen that enables even more functionality? Because that is what we're discussing here, not an IPAD.

Nice efforts, but give it up man. In SW everyone is a gamer, yet hardly anyone is actually a gamer if that makes any sense. People here have no foresight and just want to live in the now. I really shouldn't bash SW exclusively though. This is just how gamers tend to be these days which is why the industry is so damn stagnant.
Gamers used to want innovation when it was hard to get. Now they wont accept it when its right there for the taking.

I know this much though, I will take the potential for innovative gameplay at the expense of graphics any day. If the Wii U turns out to be a slightly more powerful 360 with a tablet controller then that's fine by me.

Speaking for myslef of course, but yeah. The last time I owned just one gaming platform was the NES. Since then I've owned every relevant console to date. I know Nintendo will make games I like, they always have. I'll probably own the next Sony console as well since they're doing a fine job of offering quality exclusives. Then I have good old PC for the best multiplats (usually). At this point the nextbox is the only one in question for me.
I buy Nintendo consoles primarily for Nintendo games and there are always handful of good 3rd party titles as well. I just play my multiplats elseware.

Exactly. Why are people so inclined to thinking that the Wii U controller will function like an iPad? It blows my mind. It has all the standard buttons, plus atouch screen.
I see nothing about wii-u that creates a better experience. All I saw was gimmicky stuff like catching a ball on a wii-u pad. How does that make it more interactive when you are using two hands to move the camera in a certain position. it feels nothing like catching a ball. It is stupid. Plain and simple. I feel like all wii-u could do is silly mini-games and that is about it. What can wii-u do that is better than the wii-mote. The only thing is mapping items and I guess drawing. I could go on and on why wii-mote controller is far superior to it.

If it's comfortable to use, I wouldn't mind. If not, I'd be looking for alternative controllers if I wanted to get a PS4. I think there might be some good uses for a Wii U type of controller but I have to wait and see and try it out. I'm a bit sceptical though. Their last innovation, the Wii remote and nunchuck, was kiind of fun for a few games, but I prefer a standard controller to be honest. We'll have to see how good the new one is.
It has to be able to stream for it to act as a DS touch screen, TC.ActionRemix
It's different when you stream an entire game to it than say maps, hud info and touch input, I would imagine.

Tablet is the natural evolution of the standard DA controller, from purely a technical standpoint. It's a DA + a screen. If you don't think it adds anything then that's your opinion. My opinion is that we can finally play RTS games on consoles and games like Pictionary/Mario Paint can exist.
The Wiimote+nunchuck setup is also available to use, and since there are 90M Wii's scattered around the world, it's possible to make games for Wii U that can only work with WM+. Zelda can still be WM+ mandatory even if the main controller of the system is a tablet.
My point is that both control options can and will exist for at least 5 more years.
That to me would only be an improvement to the current PS3 controller so I don't think I'd have a problem with it at all.Be open minded and think about it. The controller is from a technical standpoint a dualshock, but with an added touch screen. Journalists at E3 said the U-pad feels great.
It doesn't have to include the streaming capability of the Wii U, so let's say you can use up to 4 tablets on each system for the sake of the argument.
It will be used as the second DS screen, showing information such as maps of the entire area without the need to pause the game & more things like drawing strategies or taking notes of things you want to remember in-game.
SuperFlakeman
Yea possibly. RPGs, RTS games, and MMOs could all work well with it. Theoretically. In Nintendo's case I don't see them making any of those types of games, other than maybe more Zelda, nor do I see them willing to pay 3rd developers.[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]

It would actually make RTS games playable on consoles.
razgriz_101
If I ran Nintendo I would break out the check book and hire 3rd party developers to port RTS games, MMOs and RPGs to the Wii U.
your underestimating ninty, look at the n64 it bucked some trends and made probably the first sucessful FPS on consoles with an inexperienced team who used a lot of ingenuity with the hardware and what we knew FPS wise at the time.
And what bout Pikmin? Wii U is just gagging for a pikmin revival.
It was the first successful fps on n64 but not the first everIf the PS4 had a Wii type controller as their main controller, I would still skip the PS4.
