So, it's $200 more than Rift and requires huger specs. But it's killer feature is you can make phone calls with any HTC phones!

http://wccftech.com/htc-vive-cost-799-answer-phone-calls/

From @the_master_race

HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset from HTC and Valve, will ship in April, priced at $800. That's $200 north of the Oculus Rift headset, which costs $600 and arrives at the end of March.

Need to see more from VR than gimmicky games and costing half the price of the PC I just built before Im sold on it. Also knowing me I wont be able to play it for any length of time without my motion sickness kicking in.

That's actually cheaper than I thought it would be. I'm going with Oculus this year though. My home office isn't big enough for the Vive and my Wife wouldn't enjoy having to follow me around holding the wires so I don't bust my shit. The tech seems cool but not very practical.

We know that the the Occulus is $600, and its being sold at cost. The Vive has both that headset, and the whole room thing they're doing. If anything, $800 might actually be too cheap all things considered. That said, you're right. It's not worth the money. This is a gen 1 product, by gen 2 or 3, its likely to be both cheaper, and more importantly better.

I need to see how VR plays out. I'm convinced it will flop. If it doesn't, I may invest in a few years. Not in a hurry.

@R4gn4r0k: Kid this is VR were talking about, heavy state of the art tech if you will. No one shouldn't expect VR to be this cheap now. I wouldn't be surprise if Sony's VR will be price $399 or $499.

Gosh. At that price I'd at least expect it to be wireless. The tech looks amazing but they may have shot north of the target demographic. We'll see.

I have the Rift pre-ordered already and it is set to ship in June. I am basically going to be using VR for cockpit style games. I do think the room space tech is cool, but is very much a gimmick at this point as you are limited by your physical space in the real world. This puts a huge constraint on the game design. You will not be able to play a traditional game with exploration without using some kind of portal/teleport mechanic. Even then you will be constantly hitting the limits of your physical space based on where you are orientated in your room. Having to constantly readjust will break immersion, which is the exact opposite of what VR is trying to accomplish. There is the issue of the wires and getting tangled up or tripping over them. You could use an omni treadmill, but those are just awkward and unnatural. You are strapped in and movement is limited. I don't have enough space in my condo to accommodate a good room space setup.

The most important thing for me is that the headset itself is good. I have been hearing Rift is more comfortable and has better optics with less screen door effect. The Touch controllers look to be more ergonomic and less wand-like. They will also ship with a second sensor that will enable the room space experience. I can still switch to the Vive if I want to, but I am leaning towards the Rift at this point.

I'd pay 800-1000 dollars for (the idea behind) hololens. But this ? naaaaaaaaah. No way

And yeah sure, I know, all of this is new. Let the tech savy people with loads of money buy this and beta test this. I'll pick this up down the line after a few iterations for 200 at most... If I ever get interested in VR.

But for now 800 dollars ? ...starts drinking coffee again.

I'm not surprised by the price at all. I don't know why some people ever expected cutting edge VR technology to be cheap and I'm glad that both Vive and Oculus are going for a no compromises approach to deliver an amazing VR experience instead of going the cheap route which would have made VR come off as a gimmick. I hope Sony does the same. Playstation VR is going to have to be at least $500 minimum or else it will be guaranteed to be terrible which I worry would hurt people's perception of VR.

I got the Oculus Rift pre-ordered already and I think that is the one I'm going to stick with. I think Vive being able use your whole room is really cool, but since it is still wired, I worry that I will trip over it, so that feature is not a selling point for me until it is wireless. Therefore, I'll go with the Oculus Rift for now since it is both less expensive and from what I've heard, it's more comfortable to wear as well.

I still have to see VR as a gaming device. Right now it just looks kinda gimmicky to me. There needs to be a must have game to before I consider it. Even then I might not be sold at that price.

800 DOLLARS???!!!!! Man... If PS VR or Hololens are around this amount of money, then VR is going to flop big time.

Edit: I know it will flop, but just saying.

$600 for Rift and $800 for Hive? jesus christ! How is VR suppose to catch on and become popular with the general public at these prices? This thing will die faster then Kinect/PS Move.

Because the entusiasts buy it which reduces production costs then the price drops eventually to an affordable level.

Thats like saying why would SSD's ever catch on when they used to cost $200+ for 60gb, is that the case now?

@PSP107: That depends on the game you want to use for VR but my point is, these techs aren't going to be cheap, that's the thing. You want one or not, but do I need one for myself? The answer is maybe, I need to see what Sony does before I jump into Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or PS VR. MS HoloLens is another story.

Anyone who is surprised by this doesnt know a thing about this product, how it functions and how it's built.

I totally expected this price. It's too expensive for me, I'm more keen on the Oculus Rift's simpler setup, even though that's about $100 more than I would have liked.

Why would you want something to fail just because you don't like it? That doesn't make any sense. Successful products not only help the economy and provide jobs and opportunities, it also evolves into better more transparent/seamless products in the future and anything that drives the gaming industry in forward momentum should be welcome for any gamer. Keeping things the same is actually bad for any industry, you either grow, sell or file bankruptcy. That's how the business world works. Stagnant games just means more Assassins Creeds, COD's and Farcry's, it all gets old after a while and we need more gaming experience opportunities to provide deeper immersion, even if it's only niche audience, it's better than Farcry 36

It's got the carts already, it has two regular carts, a 160 in 1 cart and a 60 in 1 cart, so 222 games on board.

Because there is no way that a quality VR headset can be built for under $500 at this point in time. The Oculus Rift costs $600 and that is being sold at a loss and given Sony’s current poor financial situation, I don’t even think they can afford to sell at a loss. Plus the PS4 is not even powerful enough to handle VR by itself so we already know it will require an additional external processing box, which is going to add to the cost even more.

There is no way it can possibly be under $500 without being some cheap gimmick like Google Cardboard that will hurt people's perception of VR. It's better to take a no compromises approach and release a VR headset that will amaze people and make them say "I got to have that someday" even if it is currently too expensive for them than it is to release a cheap, gimmicky VR headset that makes people who try it wonder what all the VR hype is about.
