$600 for Rift and $800 for Hive? jesus christ! How is VR suppose to catch on and become popular with the general public at these prices? This thing will die faster then Kinect/PS Move.

The same way that VCRs, DVD players, and Blu-ray players were all able to catch on and become popular with the general public. The current prices of the Oculus Rift and Vive are comparable to the prices that VCRs, DVD players, and Blu-ray players were when they first launched and just like VCRs, DVD players, and Blu-ray players were sold to enthusiasts at first but then eventually dropped to a more mass market friendly price, so will the VR headsets.

Cutting edge technology is always going to be expensive and out of reach for the mass market consumers at first. Enthusiasts are the main targets at first and the Oculus Rift seems to be selling pretty well with the enthusiasts thus far considering they are already sold out for many months.

@storm_of_swords: "It's better to take a no compromises approach and release a VR headset that will amaze people and make them say "I got to have that someday" even if it is currently too expensive for them than it is to release a cheap, gimmicky VR headset that makes people who try it wonder what all the VR hype is about."

You wouldn't reach mainstream with those prices though.

That was fine when it was just that device alone. You can plug those VCRs, DVDs, Blu Ray players in and you're good to go. But with this, you need at least a $1500 rig on top of the $800 VR device. So we need to not only wait for the price of the device, but for the price of computers to reach a mass market price.

@R4gn4r0k: Kid this is VR were talking about, heavy state of the art tech if you will. No one shouldn't expect VR to be this cheap now. I wouldn't be surprise if Sony's VR will be price $399 or $499.

I'd pay 800-1000 dollars for (the idea behind) hololens. But this ? naaaaaaaaah. No way

And yeah sure, I know, all of this is new. Let the tech savy people with loads of money buy this and beta test this. I'll pick this up down the line after a few iterations for 200 at most... If I ever get interested in VR.

But for now 800 dollars ? ...starts drinking coffee again.

Good luck. The Hololense dev kits are about 3k.

When will Nintendo make a new handheld and not just another DS with a gimmicky 3D screen?

@charizard1605: what? This is new tech, it's no surprise that it's going to be very expensive.

I'd be up for this if I actually have the room to move around in. I don't have it. I'll settle for second or third generation Oculus.

I'm not sure why people are surprised. This is new tech and even then isn't aimed at the average consumer.

@mr_huggles_dog: yeah, I don't understand this double standard either.

Edit: unless I'm misunderstanding you. Nintendo was gimmicks. This isn't.

@MirkoS77: Not that it's a gimmick but it's a fucking expensive go at a peripheral that requires hardware that really isn't there yet.

Was hoping we'd see less of this overpriced peripheral nonsense in gaming.

Not as expensive as the top end monitors.

@Byshop: I know and with prices like that for AR and VR I'll happily let others take the plunge for me and contine to spend my gaming budget on PCs, consoles and games. 3k could get me a beast of a rig, a PS4 plus a good number of games.

Yeah, but so is a top monitor, or the top end of nearly any hobbyist spectrum.

Yeah, I'm down for a VR headset or two, but even to me the Hololense is prohibitively expensive. If the final product is anywhere near three grand, they better have this thing seriously baked with some really cool functionality for me to even consider it. I'd much sooner refresh my gaming laptop with something like an MSI GS70 with a GTX 970m for almost half that price.

not surprised by the price, it was going to be more than Oculus rift

now lets see that PS VR, that is the big question. Doubt they are going to be selling at a loss, so the price should reflect how much corners they had to cut.

The cheapest price that i can guess for PSVR will be $500, and that represent the lower end of vr. VR is expensive, its going to take actual released great games to pull me in. At the moment none of them interest me.

And I hope it's wireless.. PSVR I think will be the best choice considered PS games are always great.

@thendefender: I think Hololens at these prices is a steal. Remember it is a self contained device.

I'm going to buy it for sure, but I'm going to have to buy it post launch, I'm spending $800 on a 4 slot Neo Geo arcade machine next week so I have to spread out my spending.

Nice. I'm currently building an arcade cabinet. At least your MVS carts won't be as pricey as the console ones.

It's got the carts already, it has two regular carts, a 160 in 1 cart and a 60 in 1 cart, so 222 games on board.

How many megs are those carts? Didn't know the hardware could handle much over a 1000 megs.

Im cancelling my Rift preorder as we speak. Going to go with the Vive instead for the room walking stuff, controllers on launch and the forward facing camera.

Can't justify the price or specs..... too early to adopt... still not convinced its going to work... though hoping that it does pan out.
