Spore has been one of the most anticipated games of the last couple of years, garnering many best of E3 awards and recently it was confirmed that it will be coming to the Wii. Why has this announcment been glossed over by the gaming media and many hardcore gamers? When I found out I remember thinking holy crap, this is going to be huge news but it seems like it just slipped under everybodies radar and not even many Wii owners are aware that they have one of the biggest titles of next year coming to their system.

It's also coming to the DS. The main factor that will play into whether I get it for the Wii or the PC is whether or not Maxis will include connectivity to the DS version, e.g. being able to continue to evolve your species on the DS on the go, then wirelessly update your game on the Wii when you come back.

OH! Now there is an excellent idea. If it does have DS to Wii connectivity, I'll definitely get these two versions. I find myself being on the road a lot more and my DS is an awesome companion. This is a great idea. I hope Maxis is working on it.

Did the Sims go to every console? Other than half-baked mission-based versions, not really. Sims 2 Castaway was as close as any Sims game came to being on consoles.

And Will Wright said more recently that the Wii would be the only next-gen console to get Spore. I was surprised at that myself.

EDIT: Never mind. I guess it's still undecided.

Well, there definitely isn't any info out on the Wii version yet, but I think being able to do more with the PC version seems more appealing. But if they do add what mjarantilla suggests, then that can sway me because of the portability and connectivity between DS and Wii.

At first it sounded like it was going to come to all platforms but so far only the PC and the Wii have been confirmed. I wonder if it is because the Wiimote could be used has a mouse.

the PC one is the version that interests me. but this forum doesn't pay attention to spore because it's multiplat and isn't a very graphical game. Spore's most interesting aspects are it's user created content and vast scope of gameplay. something that isn't as sexy to post about as violence, badass protagonists, sexy characters, and bleeding edge graphics.

Your attempt at cleverness fails! Duke Nukem Forver is vaporware, Spore was playable at Leipzig (sp?) and you can even check out pics and gameplay vids here at Gamespot so your comparison is retarded.

Any game with the number of delays that Spore has received is vaporware until its release. Its an amazingly ambitious project and there have been numerous showings, but that doesn't save it from possible cancellation or shelving.

Well there are a couple reasons. I think most gamers are now all about graphics and gun/FPS. Sims/RTS are not realy in it would seem unless your on a PC where I think it's still pretty popular. I still play Star Craft. One reason that it's not hyped much at all here is that it is on the Wii and most ppl here really hate the Wii and think it's the anti-christ of gaming. I'm sure it will get alot more hype as it gets closer to the release date. Also Wii owners don't feel the need to justify their owning a Wii by posting fanboy topics about our games =P.

I really think it's because we doubt how well the port will work.

Screw the graphics, if it has all the same content, then that would be freaking awesome.

Why?

couple reasons

-Wii is too weak to handle direct port

-That's what EA has been doing lately with Wii versions of their franchises

-SPORE is a bit more complex than typical Wii game, which might scare customers off

-Maxis previous IPs also went the spin-off route on consoles instead of direct port

-Wright said console versions will be quite diffrent.

Well count yourself as the minority. Most ppl are all about the graphics. If it does not have glorious HD graphics they wil not give it a chance. I beat ppl will say that it must be kiddy since it's on the Wii too....

1. Based on what we've seen of Spore, ridiculous.

2. Of pre-existing franchises, yes. Of new IPs, no.

3. It's no more complex than the Sims, which has a similar target audience as the Wii. It has a large scope, but don't confuse scope with complexity.

4. Maxis' previous IPs were announced PC-exclusive. Maxis has never announced a multiplat game before until now.

5. Show me the quote, and show me how he meant "spinoff" instead of simply meaning different/added features.

you dont seem to understand the point....what led to the console versions of the sims sucking so much was that they were designed completly differently from the PC version....they were not even similar.

I would expect this to happen to spore as well....for some reason, games without actually goals to fufil have never really been that popular on consoles...while being very big on the PC.

LOL spore on Wii. That's gonna be a **** killer isn't it. The reason the gaming community doesn't give a **** is because the gaming community doesn't like crappy PC-console ports.

And alotta the cool stuff in spore is going to other planets that people make and those are automatically updated into ur solar system. Which takes harddrive space which the Wii doesn't have. So to port it to the Wii it HAS to be dumbed down.

And even though the graphics arent 'OMFG SDFKAOPSDOK awesome' I dont think the Wii could handle a direct port.

The entire game is procedural, remember? The entire philosophy behind Spore is that the entire game can contain an entire universe with an incredibly tiny amount of data.

you dont seem to understand the point of the game...everything that you see is generated by other players, and then downloaded unto your hardrive (at least with the PC version), the lack of a hard drive, is deffinetly gonna cause problems, along with the lack of a strong online setup.

this is part of the reason, you can expect the Wii version to have a totally different design to it. Similarly to the Sims on the Consoles, which is completly different from the PC version.

ths Sims has always done poorly on consoles....due to the fact that they always take out the freedom that makes the PC version so good in the first place.

You were right until you said "Think". There is No THINKING involved. THE WII COULD NEVER HANDLE A DIRECT SPORE PORT.

Err, no. Nothing is ever permanently stored to your hard drive for the online aspect. Everything is interacted with on the fly, so when you visit a planet, you're actually navigating the online portal. When you select a planet to visit, the basic values for that planet (contained in a tiny file no more than a few megs in size, if that) are temporarily downloaded to RAM, where they are stored in a segment of the memory. Then the game engine takes those values and plugs them into the game engine (loaded from the disc) to generate the planet. There are no textures to download, no sounds, no character files, nothing. Just mathematical "seeds" which the Spore engine uses to recreate another user's planet.

Think of them as save files. When you want to continue your campaign on a different console, you don't copy the whole game. You just bring your save file, which stores a few essential values (where you currently are in the game, your equipment, your current health, etc.) in a few kilobytes, and then you import that save file onto the other console.

I am fairly certain its downloaded...so that you can actually play the game offline when you need to.....

Even if they were downloaded, the files in question would not be any more than a few megabytes in size, if that. In fact, I'm willing to bet that an entire "planet" in Spore can be stored in a file no larger than a single megabyte.
