I mean ,when I got mine I thought 40 GB was plenty of room, i don't keep any media on the disk, just game data and I'll never fill that up right?

Well, its 5 months later and I've picked up a few of the better PS3 titles and guess what? MY HDD IS ALMOST FULL!!

PS3 MANDATORY install sizes:

GTAIV - 3.3 GB
Devil May Cry 4 - 4.834GB
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue - 5.235GB
Oblivion - 4.6 GB
Heavenly Sword - 2.068GB
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds - 3.612GB
Assassin's Creed - 1.3GB
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction - 417MB
Resistance: Fall of Man - 219MB
Warhawk w/o boosters (PSN) - 798 MB

Coming soon:
MGS4: mandatory 4.6 GB install

So this means I'm at 30+ gigs come June, and i don't want to have to constantly go through an uninstall/reinstall process just because Sony didn't put enough GD disk space in their console!!! And why if Blu Ray stores 50 GB of data do i have install FIVE GIGS just to play the GT5 DEMO?

yeah yeah, I KNOW I can install a bigger drive and will obviously HAVE to but do the majority of users (ie non technical) know how to swap it out or will they just put up with the limitations of the 40gb model?

Get used to mendatory installs because it's the unavoidable futur for all consoles. As the graphics get better, installs will be more and more needed, there is a point where it will be impossible to do without it and we're not far from that. Already now even the 360 would benefit from installs (See GTA4).

Yep just format the hard drive and there should be an option to back up the data on your original hard drive.

IDK about a direct transfer though

Yet I bet you probably don't play the majority of those games installed on there regularly.. Who here plays a dozen games all at the same time? Maybe 3 or 4 at best..

True, however I dont really want to delete the Install because if I ever wanted to play the game again, I dont want to sit through the install again.

Sorry to hear about your space issues. My suggestion would be to uninstall some of the games you're not playing. A game like Heavenly Sword, for instance, shouldn't need a permanant install. Your game saves are not effected by uninstalling the game, JFYI.

Also, are you sure about Assassin's Creed's install size. Just checking the back of my box, it says it requires 2048MB of free HDD space.

Only a couple of installs take longer than 5 minutes (DMC4, GT5:P, & HSG are the only "big" ones I can think of). Some of the games listed (like Oblivion) don't actually install any dta to the disk. The game simply reserves the space for caching data.

Complaining about a 5 minute install is stupid. HDD installs offer clear benefits including games loading faster, less texture pop-in, and a quieter gaming experience.

I would imagine in the future that this problem is gonna be resolved somehow, obviously i'm not a dev so I can't say how.

Besides hard drives arent that expensive if you get em from the right place.

For people on a budget. I just got an 80GB because it was a good deal and I dont plan to clutter my PS3 with a whole bunch of demos and useless videos.

You know whats funny, all I hear are MS fans complain about the possibility of upping your HDD as a bad thing. The truth is buying the 80GB HDD for my PS3 was the cheapest accessory I EVER bought for any of my systems. Controllers cost $50 dollars, Live cost $50 dollars, even Memory cards for my PS2 cost me around 50 dollars. But I bought an 80GB HDD for my PS3 for 25 dollars.

90% of the lemmings wish they had the option to install data for faster load times and less texture pop in...GTA4 and DMC

imagine if ME had the option to be installed into HDD.. that horrible texture pop in would be gone... now what lemming wouldnt want that?

I think this might just be THE reason I don't want to buy it.

If I want to install a game, the PC gets that honour.

I mean, what happened to the good old "Plug and Play" ?

I knew all these mandatory installs where a bad thing from the start. Slightly faster loading speeds isnt worth eating up the HDD space. I rather stick with slow blu ray loading speeds.

The mandatory installs are getting a bit ridiculous. Even the PS3 owners have to admit.

Imagine if you owned those game and a 20 gig drive. You're FORCED to buy a new HDD.

Obviously the response is "You can pick up a cheap HDD for blabla dollars", but it's still an arse.
