So I think the first game I ever played was Hard Hat Mack on the Apple II GS.
Then there was the Space Quest Series, and when we got a PC, it was Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Monkey Island, and Dark Forces.
I still remember my heart skipping when I saw that epic 8 bit dragon at the end of the first dungeon in Legend of Zelda; at that time I kind of sucked at games, and it was an incredible feat to see what lay in the room beyond it.
I've gone through almost every Final Fantasy, I've played online with games as early as Jedi Knight. We had LAN parties with Starcraft and NOX. I was among the first generation to play Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and we had a lot of fun with Golden Eye.
I took a two year break from games, but when I got back, I whipped through the Metal Gear Solid series, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Ratchet and Clank, Viewtiful Joe, I tried it all.
I pwned my friends the first time I played Halo, and had a blast with Smash Bros everytime we had a party.
I never owned a Gamecube though, after playing older Nintendo games, I just couldn't find the newer ones to be fun anymore, as they were the same. I started getting into Resident Evil, and I still love Resident Evil 4 which I owned on the PS2 before I got my Wii.
Looking at the console War, I was, for this generation, in seeking a new system looking for one that could provide different experiences and challenges. So far there isn't one.
What I've seen on the X-Box 360 and the PS3 are me-toos and graphic upgrades; nothing special.
Ultimately, I got a Wii though, because my Wife wanted it. I'm glad I did though, because Smash Bros. Brawl is every bit as good as Melee was and better. More importantly, I can finally now play Smash online with my friends back home. I don't need the other systems to do that, because if I want to play an online FPS, I have plenty of PC games that provide better experiences than what the newer consoles have to offer.
And now suddenly I'm not a gamer anymore, because the Wii is a "Casual system."
I've always thought I was a gamer, I've done most of what there is to do by way of video gaming; but I guess I'm wrong, the internet wins. I bought the wrong system apparently.
What's up with this idea? If anything the Wii has the most potential for uniqueness and innovation. I don't think it has even come close to living up to that potential, but it's there. I fear that the other two consoles however are doomed to mediocraty, forever cloning what was done last generation simply because everyone is at a loss for ideas.
I wouldn't mind playing MGS4, but that's mostly a fanboy response, and I don't think the PS3 is worth the hit to my bank account for just one game.
