What's with the stupid questions? No offence, but Barret in FF7 had a gun, big deal. And Barret is a main character in FF7.

Thank you JRPGs, for making people think that the main character has to have an oversized sword as a weapon in order for a game to qualify as an RPG.

Play, FFVII,FFVIII,FFXII,FFX-2. There characters use guns to, more rpg in a sense than FF, in where your actions actually do change the outcome of the game.

i am going to buy the game i am just asking a questionTnasty11

well forgive us if we find ur question illogical.

WRPGs usually have guns, its an RPG, there is no such thing as SRPG's (swordRPG), ur a FF fan no? i dont think so since in FFVIII squalls weapon is a gunsword... GUN SWORD.....GUN GUN GUN GUN SWORD

What? The game takes place in the future, plus it may have some sort of "melee-energy-weapon" as well.

FFVIII uses guns too - Laguna uses one (He's the equivalent to Squall). Irvine uses a gun as well.

RPGs are about roleplaying a character as they evolve over the course of a linear or nonlinear story; Not about the cliches which surround a genre.

RPG=Role Playing Game. You play a role, in this case, the role of a gun toting Spectre. You could play ANY role in an RPG, though. You see?

Just because a game has a gun it dont mean it is an FPS. An RPG is a role playing game, it could be guns, swords or cucumbers, its still called an RPG.

Yes, just because Shepard doesn't use an oversized sword and magic summons doesn't mean that the game isn't an RPG.

Sword, gun, fists, nothing...its not the weapons that make an RPG, but the Role Playing itself, hence the term Role Playing Game.

*sigh*

RPG is a ROLE-PLAYING GAME.

That means (supposedly), you either create a role or get given one and you get choice as to how to play said role and play through important events in their life.

The weapon they use is irrelevant, the RPG in RPG is about choosing paths for your character and playing a role how you want to.

Sadly, many Japanese so-called RPG's abandoned this in favour of "Turn-based action games with swords with some features that RPG's often use." and now everyone thinks that's an RPG, but it's not really.

RPG's commonly feature levelling up, stats, parties, and the like. However, none of that is NECESSARY for it to be an RPG. The only thing RPG needs is choosing how to play a role and an emphasis on story.

The best RPG to date, Fallout 2 has guns. It also has children, but not in the American version because you could kill them. ALL!

Another thing that bothers me about JRPGs. Swords are vastly more powerful than guns, and the protagonist will ALWAYS weild one, usually a sword that would be impossible for even Zhengi to weild. And yet, he STILL slices through those gun-toting badies like nothing. It boggles the mind.

its true that most rpgs use swords but an rpgis a game where you level up the characters, weapons have nothing to do to what makes an rpg. Look at pokemon for the gameboy, they dont have any swords, so basically you can use guns on an rpg.

Only in a fantasy world can you take a sword to a gun fight and come out alive.

I am sure you are going to get slammed by everyone, but what does the type of weapon have to do with if it is an RPG or not? I mean mass effect iseven turn based does not get more "RPG" than that. It isalso a serious GOTY contender as well it should be.

what a stupid question. rpgmeans role playing game. rpg doesn't dictate what kinds of weapons can be used in the game. weapons can be whatever devs want them to be.

Technically, yes. However, as a genre, it focuses on gamer-specific development of the character in question, not necessarily simply "playing as them". Kinda hard to explain.
