Mass Effect will have more RPG elements then FF games-

1-6 classes to choose from and 6 unlockable ones. Example soldier ( warrior type ) Adept ( mage type )

2-Completly customizable features. You have the ability to choose how you want to look unlike FF games.

3-Can choose to play male or female not forced to play some girly looking man like in FF games.

4-You choose where you were born and that has a effect of the story

5Choosing male or female has a effect on the story

[QUOTE="GabeBlack"]When you really think about.. Arent most games rpgs? Because most the time you are playing the main charcter.Erkidu
Technically, yes. However, as a genre, it focuses on gamer-specific development of the character in question, not necessarily simply "playing as them". Kinda hard to explain.

For some reason I like to think Zelda is an RPG.

There are RPG elements to Zelda - however, since you can't really "develop" (such as building in level or skill level) the character, it's considered an action/adventure.

What? The game takes place in the future, plus it may have some sort of "melee-energy-weapon" as well.

FFVIII uses guns too - Laguna uses one (He's the equivalent to Squall). Irvine uses a gun as well.

RPGs are about roleplaying a character as they evolve over the course of a linear or nonlinear story; Not about the cliches which surround a genre.

Hate to say it. But there is no Melee weapons. Believe me, we begged on the bioware forums for it. All I want was a knife :(

When WRPGs are set in a certain era, they usually use the technology that would fit in that era. So you won't be seeing any melee weapons in Mass Effect. Just like you don't see anyone usuing machine guns in Oblivion. It just wouldn't make sense to have a sword fight when they're trying to go for a more technologically heavy type of setting. We don't have wars involving swordfights anymore, so it wouldn't make sense for them to use medieval type of weapons 200 years from now.
