I can't be the only one underwhelmed with Uncharted 4 so far

Let me be the first to say that I:

  • Prefer the PS4 (I don't even own an Xbox One, and the Wii U is a joke)
  • Love the Uncharted series (Among Thieves is one of my favorite games from last generation)
  • Really respect Naughty Dog (what they pulled with The Last of Us was nothing short of scintillating)

But from every thing that we have been shown of Uncharted 4 so far, I've just been left... cold. Nothing about it seems to evoke the kind of thrill that Uncharted 2 was doing back in the day, something seems off. For starters, Uncharted 4 just seems to be more Uncharted. It looks prettier (though not that much prettier, not like Among Thieves was back in the day), but the game largely seems to be just Uncharted with a little bit of the 'two approaches per encounter' thing lifted from The Last of Us. But it still has the same terrible platforming, the same whack-a-mole encounter design, the same Drake monologuing to himself, the same shit gunplay, and potentially, the same lack of player agency that made Uncharted 3 so terrible.

The multiplayer mode somehow made me even less hyped if that was possible, as an actual competitive multiplayer mode with Uncharted's still not fixed mechanics is the last thing I want. At the beginning of this year, Uncharted 4 was one of my most hyped games of this year- today I don't even care about it. I can't be the only one who feels this way, right? I mean, I guess Uncharted 4 looks pretty, but it all feels very last gen in terms of how it seems to play, and how it is structured.

Scintillating. smh

And no, there is nothing impressive about it other than it looks pretty. Uncharted 2 was pretty damn good, but as a third person shooter this series isn't exactly some bastion of excellent game mechanics, and that first game got by on some fresh set pieces (that still kept the player involved) and excellent pacing. Both of which might be harder to pull off a second time when you're expected to deliver on that. But it's more of the same old shit, it's not the most compelling PS4 exclusive game on the horizon, much less one of the more interesting games coming out next year.

You aren't, but i kinda lost interest in the series after the crappy UC3 so i dunno if that counts. Gameplay shown is just too simplistic for my taste. Never liked the UC2 multiplayer so the UC4 multi unveil did nothing for me.

I saw exactly what I expected from a 5th installment in this franchise.

More of the same.

Yeah you guys better start down playing UC4's hype now so you can all hype it a nice safe 8 and not have to endure what's going on in that sticky up there. :)

It's probably after Uncharted 3 that was a letdown to everyone back then not being the best from Uncharted 2. Naughty Dog isn't even trying with this series anymore and The Last of Us was sooo damn good then any of the Uncharted games left a vacuum of expertise from what Naughty Dogs is capable of making a good game. Having said that, E3 2015 Uncharted 4 was amazing but now, it lost its hype coming from me but nevertheless, I will pick it up on day one.

@zeeshanhaider: Funny you mention it because Uncharted is the COD of TPP games, or at least has become it.

Uncharted is the CoD of TPP games. You can argue the same about Gears and they even fell from grace somewhat because of the staleness but it was Gears 1 which was to TPP what Modern Warfare was to FPS. Not Uncharted.

Well if it wasn't "more Uncharted" people would whine and say: "this isn't even Uncharted anymore", so it's kind of impossible to satisfy everyone lol (btw asking on the whiniest forum on the internet if anyone else is underwhelmed is like asking if anyone is thirsty in Cairo).

My playstyle in Uncharted is to play on Normal and then run around a lot in the levels taking out enemies in various ways, not worrying too much about anything. For this style there seem to be improvements in terms of more mobliity options (sliding down slopes and the grapling hook looks real fun). The stealth seems improved which is an option I might use every now and then. I thought the setpiece chase-sequence they showed at E3 was very impressive.

It's gonna be a good ten hours of pure action fun!

It's the last one. No point in trying to fundamentally change the game.

UC 4 is one of the few console games I actually want to play, the Mp footage did nothing for me tho.

The SP however is probably going to be fantastic.

Pretty sure the live demos counter you entire first paragraph brah :P

The platforming has been improved, exploration seems to be rewarded with either goods or safer paths and the game looks miles better than anything on previous gen and any released PS4/XB1 game to date. Can't talk much about the encounters as that's something I'll need to play to judge. They were done really well for the most part in TLOU (a few spammy/annoying sections here and there though). Likewise for gunplay, it may look picture perfect in demos but that's something I need to play to judge.

Don't complain about Drake being Drake. That's like complaining Mario does random sounds for no damn reason in his games :P

Also yes, the MP looks quite a bit of a downgrade versus the SP. I'm guessing the 60fps mark is really too much for the PS4 and XB1. That said, the introduction of classes (or what seemed like it?) may mix up things in a nice way. Also, not sure if it's just the way they teased it, but it seems like we're getting some proper Co-op modes. Or at least I'd like that to be true (95% sure it was just to make the video interesting). In UC2 and UC3 they were a blast when playing with actual friends (randoms never gave a crap if someone on the team was dying, which was lame and made us all lose the match).

I'm hype. It's looking to be (so far) a nice swan song for Uncharted by ND (pretty sure Sony will get some other studio on the IP). Plus, after March we'll know ND will be all in with their new IP! So that in itself is a big (non-UC4 related) plus! :P

I'm not, because I know what to expect from it. It's good popcorn gaming. Also the Last of us gets waaaaaay too much credit.

Multiplayer will never be as good as it was in 2, it was fresh then for starters. I'll never play it anyways since I won't pay for the service, so w/e.

As for the single player, it doesn't blow my socks off graphically, but it's still probably the most impressive game yet on Ps4. It's going to take a hell of a lot to wow me on a technical level from now on. Story wise I think it will feel different enough, with Drake's brother it'll have that "you'll always be the little brother" going on until a twist maybe. It seems to have a bit darker and more serious tone, but it's still Uncharted.

Expect a pretty predictable plot, and some awesome set pieces and you'll enjoy it.

So far I enjoyed watching gameplay vids.. The multiplayer seems fun with frantic gunplay, the usual action-packed senseless shooting one expects from the series with the addition of some funny dialogue :)

However being a huge fan of the series I'm quite biased so in reality I will only be able to judge once I play the final game and spend some hours online..

I'm with you. Uncharted is one of, if not my, favorite series but I'm suffering from a bit of UC fatigue. We'll see how this one progresses. I'm hoping for the best, because I've already designated the PS4 as my NaughtyDog console.

You know why you really enjoyed Uncharted 2 and consider it one of the best moments from last gen?

Because it wasn't "the same old shit". It had one mediocre game before it, then all of a sudden Uncharted 2 comes out firing on all cylinders and automatically becomes the must have title on PS3.

Uncharted 4, by default, will not have that.

The only series I think that kept getting more exciting with each installment was The Witcher. The first was ambitious but flawed, the second was great, and the third was amazing. And they managed to do that because they kept switching the goalposts with each game. Uncharted and many other series just give us "the same old shit".

Guys, take a note from your sex lives and realise that the best things come in unexpected surprises that feel great.

How can anyone say anything negative when we have only seen 3 videos that all look great? LOL,how can Uncharted have fatigue when the last game released in 2011? U4 looks great from what I have seen and every time I watch the game play I notice something new and it looks like it will be the best in the franchise easily and I notice the positive affect that TLoU has had on the gameplay.Uncharted will remain the best third person action game on the market and raise the bar as usual.U3 was a great game too and I think people like to bash it to seem cool online cause offline everyone loves it.U4 is only underwhelming compared to Horizon cause no game looks better in any category. It will be a candidate for Game of the Generation after it releases and you will love it.

Gears was always better anyways, anyone who tries to argue Uncharted's gameplay as good is clearly deluded.

Gears, Max Payne 3, Vanquish and TLOU >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Every single crappy Uncharted

I like how people are already judging the game when it isn't even out yet? And as for the TC, you either need to rewatch what you've seen or quit the uncharted series all together. What did you honestly expect from another uncharted game? It looks improved in all areas compared to the previous uncharted games. Anyways, I guarantee you'll enjoy it once it's out...from STORY to Gameplay...wait and see.

TLoU helped shine light on why I find Uncharted to be a very "ho-hum" experience. It was more grounded (no pun intended) in its gameplay. Uncharted is like an amusement park ride. Everything is a spectacle, so therefore nothing is. Thoughtless, and the gunplay is utter dogshit in comparison to what TLoU achieved.

Had I not played TLoU, I'd probably be more hyped for Uncharted. As it is, it's been bettered.

It is the game I am now most interested in for my PS4, but I do feel underwhelmed by what I've seen. It's mostly because it seems like it has that more of the same kinda feel to it. The thing is, the formula works, so why change it. I 100% expect this to be an amazing game. Naughty Dog never disappoints imo.

Naughty Dog did have a policy where they would create a new IP with every console refresh only they've not done anything yet.

So maybe they have something waiting?

If it is indeed a prettier Uncharted 2, I will be dissapointed. But the PSX demo alone already changes core gameplay up enough for that not to be the case.

Parts 1 and 3 proved that Uncharted is a GOOD but not great series. They should have stopped at 3 and moved on to bigger better things. The series peaked with 2.

UC4 looks like to improve upon everything so what is the issue here? People wanted more dynamic stealth/gameplay and the latest demos show exactly that. UC4 looks to combine the best part of both UC/TLOU. Everything they have learned is going to be put to good use. Everything will come together and make an amazing game hopefully to satisfy or to change your uninformed outlook on the game and the seemingly rushed judgement. They can't show everything like UC3.

Be patient and judge the game when you have the game in your console, playing it with your own two hands then perhaps you will be able to judge it fairly. As of right now, this just looks like picking on the game to fit an agenda or what you have in mind. Don't take this as an insult but I expected a better argument from you.

Desmonic said it best really.

Btw I should follow my own advice hehe but I can be a bit judge mental at times so I understand what yo are saying. Apologies if I sounded too defensive or insulting in any way.

People should know not to doubt Naughty Dog by now. Uncharted 4 is a much bigger gap than Uncharted: DF to Uncharted 2 was. It's weird to see people saying TLoU has better gunplay than Uncharted 4 when they haven't played it. Naughty Dog and people that have played it are singing a different tune. According to the lead animator: Uncharted 4 is the only game where they've managed to nail the feel of the game between weightiness and responsiveness, saying it's as responsive as the Jak games were.

The first demo showed us how dynamic the combat is and how well it all flows together. No game flows quite as well with the level design from stealth, climbing, destructible cover, using the tools, sliding down a mud slide, it all just flows together so well. The environments were far bigger than anything in past Uncharted games and no game beats it in the level of verticality that we saw.

The second demo showed us how they're improving set pieces by making them dynamic instead of just a roller coaster ride. According to Straley, there are things that they are doing that they couldn't even imagine of doing last gen.

Uncharted 4 is a huge improvement over past Uncharted games in every aspect from; gunplay, responsive controls, new tools (rope, piton, vehicles - not just the jeep), AI, verticality and the amount of things you can climb now, stealth, dynamic set pieces, destructible environments, navigational freedom playing a huge role with multiple paths (each area will be like a mini open world), treasures and branching clues on where to find them, things like handholds breaking will now be tied to how you actually do the platforming. Navigational freedom/platforming is the thing they haven't shown us much of which they're promising huge changes.

If you want to get hyped about the gameplay just watch/read any interview with Bruce Straley. I'm pretty confident this will be the highest rated game of the generation when it releases, one of the few games out there to offer the whole package of gameplay, story, and graphics.

Interesting read.

But what do you mean with: "The environments were far bigger than anything in past Uncharted games"

Past Uncharted games never had big environments. They had linear levels, where you could deviate from the path a little bit to find a secret.

I chuckled... hard. :P

Could have fooled me. Mods can be Lems, Cows, and Hermits or are you guys immune to such labels.

@R4gn4r0k: There were some big areas in past Uncharted games, like the shipyard in Uncharted 3 where the game gave you the freedom to approach how you wanted. They had fairly large combat bowls like that where enemies would keep coming in waves. The ones in Uncharted 4 are an evolution of that and are on a different scale, and offer much more verticality instead of being just horizontal areas with cover to hide behind.

You won't know which paths to take but you'll know the general direction so you don't get lost despite the levels being huge. There was a recent video where Naughty Dog and Valve talked about level design in games where Naughty Dog said that you need to look for environmental cues to know where you're going. For example, in the first demo you see a huge cliff in the background that towers above everything and has an interesting shape, you know that's where your destination is most likely.

In the E3 demo you know you're supposed to go downhill, regardless of which path you take there.

@kratosyoloswag: That is a nice evolution, indeed. See, it's stuff like this that goes over your head at first, but it makes for an interesting sequel. (and not just: 'oh, another uncharted)

Even the bigger areas of previous Uncharted games, still felt like you were walking in a straight line to me.

Mods can be whatever, yeah, because they can have preferences too, they are people. I just find the lem tag for me hilarious. I have only ever owned one Xbox console, the Xbox 360. My preferences have always been more Nintendo and Sony. The Xbox One is still the only system this generation I do not have. I daresay that I own, and have owned, more PlayStation stuff than you ever have. I even have two PS Vitas and one PSTV. I'm just not a raging blind fanboy about Sony, or any company- when I feel happy, I praise them (hell, it looks like you missed the three page thread I made praising Sony and their first party not five topics below this one), and when I don't like something, I criticize them. This is not called being a lem, or sheep, or cow, or whatever other nonsense, it's called being a rational person capable of logical thought.

I stand corrected. Temporary Lemeny then like some kind or temporary mental illness. You are judging the game off of a multiplayer map from yesterday, but how quick you forget the E3 demo.

Still nope. I liked the Uncharted 4 E3 demo more, sure, but it was still just a slightly shinier version of Uncharted, and I was still underwhelmed. Uncharted 2 was legitimately a generational leap- Uncharted 4 seems to be suffering from diminishing returns.

Im still loving what I've seen.

Im sure they arent showing too much of the Single player because they showed way too much for U3. Im not worried about the campaign at all, because even the worst Uncharted game is still better than most games and way more fun than most campaigns out there.

Im actually hyped that they kept the Multiplayer a bit wacky because I was worried that since U4 is supposed to be more serious and they added new gameplay mechanics to add to the realness that the multiplayer would change into a more serious less fun style.

U3 multiplayer was supper fun because of the wacky abilities and just jumping around the levels. Now they added the super natural stuff that was in U1 and 2, but werent in any multiplayer into U4.

I cant fucking wait for the co-op

U4 will be fucking great and you will look silly when it comes out.
