I don't get it either: free online, blu-ray, 3 systems in one (well, at the time...thank the cheap asses for that one...now it's 2), and people are still ungrateful? Well, the PS3 is gaining momentum, though. I'd say the price is justified.

because sony is going for profitability this gen, its no longer about winning, its about obligations to shareholders, when you are a publicly traded company, you HAVE to have worry about keeping the guys who bought your stock happy, or they will sell and your whole company will collapse. If they werent still incurring losses on every unit sold, or the software was selling really really well, (except for MGS4) then maybe they could offset it somehow, but right now, its not going to happen, if they did, then it would only please fanboys and abandon the people who bought stock in you, which is more important????

lol, thanks man, its amazing how many people dont understand that, and just want Sony to lower the price to "beat" MS, not knowing that it would be a shallow victory and possibly cause them to shut down the gaming division. I dont want that to happen because, as a gamer, i like competition. Hey, add me to XBL ok

The 80 GB for 400 Euro comes with Resistance 2, Little Big Planet or Motorstorm 2 here at the moment.

Considering the price has dropped by about £200 from release, the xbox has been out for a year longer and the online on xbox costs £40 a year and the wireless adapter is £65 compared to the free online for the ps3 I would say this is a very reasonable price.

£65? Fail ... Also, you don't have to use the official one ... MS never claimed you had to. For multiplats, the Xbox is by far the better choicem as it's cheaper, and plays 99% of them better then the PS3.

SONY didn't just drop the price, they altered the PS3 to make production cheaper, they took out BC, removed some USB ports, removed the card readers and god knows what else.

People really need to quit with adding the "optional" stuff in to the 360, you don't need the wireless adapter to pop in a game and play it, the cheapest 360 SKU is 199 and it plays games straight out of the box without needing all the optional stuff.

Sony knows it won't be able to win a pricing war against Microsoft. This is a clear competitive advantage that MS has established. If Sony lowers the PS3 to $299, Microsoft will be able to match it with another 360 price drop of the premium to $199. I don't think that Sony wants to put more downward pressure in price on the 360 right now. After all, they themselves know the value a $199 price tag has on a console. That's when the PS2 really took off for them.

So rather than get into a pricing war with MS, Sony is trying to market the PS3 as a fully-featured console with free online, Blu-Ray, large hard drive, great looking games, etc. It's up to the consumer to decide if they want all those extra features for $200 more (if we're talking the 360 Arcade).

And besides, Sony is aiming for profitability here. They could care less what the fanboys think. They have access to their numbers and they have the analysts to determine what kind of profitability (or losses) they can expect if they go for a price drop. To the fanboys, they look at this as a horse race. They want their console to be 1st. Well it's not going to happen. Everybody knows the Wii is the clear winner this generation. My suggestion is to just love your system regardless and enjoy the games that come out for it. How your console "places" should have no bearing whatsoever on your enjoyment of it.

you say $400 is still expensive? well in australia we have to pay almost $500 USD for a ps3 and we do complain but there is nothing we can do. like its been said on numerous occasions its great value for money and it isnt in sony's interest to have a price cut as yet. In order to catch up to the wii and 360 sales they would need to go as low as the wii which if they did at the moment they would be making a huge loss. once they get enough people to buy it at its price right now, and they can afford to make a price cut then they will really generate the money.

Well considering whats inside it: Basically a 360 arcade ($200) + The best Blu-ray player on the market ($200, should actually be more) + all the little bells and whistles like free online, large HDD, and WiFi, The PS3 is very reasonably priced if not an absolute steal.

If they lower the price any lower they will be losing alot more money then they are currently losing at the moment. It contains a blu-ray player along with other features that comes right with it, so it really is a good deal for that. I can honestly say that of course they still want to compete it just a matter of strategic planning because a small mistake can ruin them.

Look on paper the Ps3 is a great value. But not many people are looking for that value now. Take that Blue Ray player out of there and it would be going head to head with the 360 right now.

I don't even think thats what it is, SONY screwed up at the beginning of this gen, Krazy Ken spouting stupid comments, releasing a $600 GAME console, SONY over the past year or so has been trying to correct what went wrong in the first place, just look at how much they have altered their SKU's, they went from more USB ports, full BC, card readers, to what we have now.

Erm, since when can you use any other wireless adapter? Most adapters require drivers, which can not be installed on to the Xbox 360 hard drive. For that reason most people who don't want to manipulate the console will be forced to use the Microsoft WiFi adapterif they want a wireless connection. The price is around £55 though, not 65. It's a terrible piece of equipment though, thing broke on me in about 3 months. I don't even know why I bothered.

The PS3 has been losing momentum for months now. Why do you keep posting lies? Does it make you feel better? Are you just misinformed? Are you hoping to convince a PS2 owner or two that the PS3 is a great purchase? I don't get it.

And for some reason, people fail to realize this. This is why sales ARE important, even though we as gamers can't "play" them.

You don't even have to use an adapter in the first place if you have a PC close to your XBox, as I assume plenty of people do. There's an Ethernet cable in the box.

which is exactly why I'm saving up for one. And TC you know how much money it took Sony to make the Ps3. That's why the price is the way it is.

Considering the price has dropped by about £200 from release, the xbox has been out for a year longer and the online on xbox costs £40 a year and the wireless adapter is £65 compared to the free online for the ps3 I would say this is a very reasonable price.

WasntAvailable

£65? Fail ... Also, you don't have to use the official one ... MS never claimed you had to. For multiplats, the Xbox is by far the better choicem as it's cheaper, and plays 99% of them better then the PS3.

I don't know of another usb adapter that will work but you can use a wireless access point.

I agree that the $99 wireless adapter is lame, they need to cut the price in half. A cheaper wireless adapter would encourage more people to use live.

there's an uncharted bundle, there was an MGS4 bundle, there was a motorstorm bundle... personally i don't mind the console without games at the price it's at, considering what it comes with, and the quality of it, it's well worth 400$.

They went and put both the Cell and Blu-ray in the thing, without first considering the consequences of using such new-fangled and expensive technology. They wanted to make the "home media hub" and not just a gaming console. I buy gaming consoles to play games on, not to watch movies. Which is one reason why I still don't have a PS3, it hasn't reached the $300 magic number for consoles yet.

I don't get it either: free online, blu-ray, 3 systems in one (well, at the time...thank the cheap asses for that one...now it's 2), and people are still ungrateful? Well, the PS3 is gaining momentum, though. I'd say the price is justified. DethSkematik
gaining momentum???

because sony is going for profitability this gen, its no longer about winning, its about obligations to shareholders, when you are a publicly traded company, you HAVE to have worry about keeping the guys who bought your stock happy, or they will sell and your whole company will collapse. If they werent still incurring losses on every unit sold, or the software was selling really really well, (except for MGS4) then maybe they could offset it somehow, but right now, its not going to happen, if they did, then it would only please fanboys and abandon the people who bought stock in you, which is more important????navyguy21
What? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Sony's lack of a price drop isn't to appease shareholders. Sony's lack of a price drop is to maintain a healthy revenue stream. Anyone who knows anything about console success understands that the game is won or lost in software sales. Most companies sell their hardware at a loss in hopes of recouping their costs in software sales. The problem that Sony has had from the beginning with the PS3 is that they were losing way too much per console sold. Something like $240 per 60 gb console, and a little less for the 20 gb. The other problem that Sony has which correlates directly with the software issue is the Blu-Ray trojan horse issue. It's ironic that the part of the console that Sony thought would put them ahead this generation (blu-ray), is the very thing that has hurt them. There are far too many PS3 owners that bought it just to watch movies, and who have no interest in using it to play games. So, on the one hand they are still losing money on each console sold and they aren't recouping enough money in software sales to turn a profit. They can't drop the price because they will continue to lose more money. Sony clearly didn't have share value on their mind when they set off with developing the PS3. All they had was hubris, and a misguided belief that people would buy anything so long as it has the Playstation logo on it.

The cheapest PS3 SKU (80 GB) is $400, it's still very valuable seeing how it does come with 80 GIG, plus the Blu-Ray.... but NO games are included even during the Christmas time. I know that 360 Pro Model comes with Lego Indiana Jones & Kung Fu Panda (which doesn't scream buy me by a huge sector of 360 fans) but it still does come with free games!

But if ppl want to play Fall Out 3 or GTA 4 (or many AAA titles multi-plat) , would you rather spend $400 or $200?

SONY didn't just drop the price, they altered the PS3 to make production cheaper, they took out BC, removed some USB ports, removed the card readers and god knows what else.

People really need to quit with adding the "optional" stuff in to the 360, you don't need the wireless adapter to pop in a game and play it, the cheapest 360 SKU is 199 and it plays games straight out of the box without needing all the optional stuff.

An 80 gig with 4 usb with BC costs $400.

So at launch, it was 60 gig with BC with 4 usb for 600, now it has -$200 with +20 gigs.
