They could care less about losing exclusive games. They have the upper edge all the long when bluray won the format war. Losing FF13 seemed like a big blow but after thinking, sales will not be affected much. Why is this so? What they are aiming for is that the ps3 is the cheapest bluray player so sales will always increase even if all exclusives are snatched away.

They also invested more on 1st part years ago, knowing that 3rd party exclusives are less and less viable.

I wasn't even aware that DVD was counted as a player in the war.

And yeah, even if the PS3 were to be discontinued today due to lack of sales Sony could still call it a success because it helped Blu-Ray get a foot in the door.

Personally I feel the same way about the PS3 being used only to win the format war. It's one of the reasons why I keep myself from buying a PS3 (besides not many games that interest me). I felt the same way about the PS2, but with the PS2 there were a ton of games that I wanted, as well as being able to play PSOne games that I skipped out on due to skipping that gen for PC gaming. This time around though, there's not really anything that's must have for me, and I have a huge (and I really mean huge) collection of DVDs, so I'm not really looking to trade up at this point.

Yes, but with their ultimate backup plan - The cheapest and best bluray player on the market, ps3 sales will only increase.

After watching Sony's Press Conference, I have to say that I'm glad that the PS3 has BluRay! Other than a small handful of games, BluRay keeps the system in my living room and not on the shelf at Eb Games. Pretty smart move to include BluRay on PS3!

It was most definitley part of their stratergy, like with the PS2, alot of people bought it as a DVD player, and when Blu Ray becomes more widespread, alot of people will buy a PS3 like they did a PS2. They will get a Blu Ray player, games machine and general multi media system in one, and you can bet alot of people will like the sound of something like that when the price becomes more affordable, well that's my view on it.

How can this make you happy?

You basicly end up with a console you only use for movies.

You could say that. I would say 1st party would be their main plan this generation with bluray as a strong backup.

Smart move?

So they sale more PS3's......lose money in the process. Then they don't get the money when game software is sold because they are all Blu-ray users who own the console....not gamers. Sony ends up with a higher userbase and half the software sales of X360.

That's a smart move? honestly your probably right but this is exactly why they are losing exclusives from 3rd party devs (and losing titles completely). You still think it's a smart move?

Fixed. Sony is also focusing strongly on their 1st party this generation. If we all take out our fanboy glasses, we can see that multiplatform games are still games. I'm not happy with Sony though.

Cows give a dam because it's one of the top selling franchises of the playstation brand. It's something that would definetley be considered a system seller, something they really need. Now it's just another multiplat that won't move consoles probably......just like GTA4.

Sony has the biggest first party developers with Microsoft game studios coming very close so they dont worry much about 3rd party like SquareEnix. Also there was a list of exclusive games coming for all the consoles and sony had the most and yes Bluray is helping increase the sales because its a buy factor between the PS3 and any other console. MS knows this and they will probably come with a bluray 360 next year or for the 720.

hrmmmm, this whole "it will sell the most on PS3 anyways"....you still believe that after everyone spammed it constantly when GTA4 was announced as a multiplat? I believe the sales tell the story......X360 sales > PS3 sales for GTA4. Why would it be any different for this game? Heck I'm waiting for MS to announced exclusive DLC for FF13 soon....you know it's coming.

Nah. There're enough PS3s in Japan with people that will buy FF that FF on PS3 might outsell FF on 360.

Get your facts straight, I'm infact bashing Sony on the direction they are taking. I'm an avid gamer and only owned a ps3 because I can only afford one. Apparently Sony played a totally different game this gen and pissed the hell out of me.

[QUOTE="GARRYTH"]first like i have said before sony is not stupid wasting money on a game that will sell the most on there console any ways. japan will be the most sold anyways wich = ps 3. NA are not interested in jrpg any more they all about what fps has the best on-lline game. last gen the ps 2 no on-line play like today so more people were into jrpg not this gen were all about on-line play this is why non of 360 jrp sold that much here.darthogre

hrmmmm, this whole "it will sell the most on PS3 anyways"....you still believe that after everyone spammed it constantly when GTA4 was announced as a multiplat? I believe the sales tell the story......X360 sales > PS3 sales for GTA4. Why would it be any different for this game? Heck I'm waiting for MS to announced exclusive DLC for FF13 soon....you know it's coming.

well devil may cry 4 out sold more world wide than 360 versions because of japan sales. japan does not buy gta games.

So they are basicly aiming for nintendos strategy minus the good exclusives?Kirlok

It's how you beome more profitable. There is no way M$ is making money on Xbox buying all these exclusives and with the cost of RROD.

DVD is still winning the format war.Jandurin

VHS outsold DVD when DVD was new. Big deal. DVD sales are slowing down. Bluray sales are going up. Always follow the growing market.

I completely missed that. This is also the reason I'm disappointed with Sony.. but I saw that from before it launched... why'd you still buy one?

I forgot to say this.......

FFX sales : Japan 3 million Everyone else: Almost 5 million

This was the first FF on the PS2 so I would have expected to see the same type of sales on the PS3 when 13 was released.

Having this game a mutliplat outside of Japan is HUGE. Everyone seems to think this game only sales in Japan, that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

You're exaggerating the differences and your comparisons are unequal.

They are making profit per xbox 360 sold since quite a while now, besides they have the highest software sales. Even if it isnt a huge profit, they are making money.

And how undeserving its praise is.

theres no excuse for losing ff13 as an exclusive. We all get to play it right? Well I want to play vesperia and star ocean on the ps3 as well as eternal sonata. Eternal sonata is coming out for ps3 but ppl suspect that it won't leave japan. Vesperia and star ocean show no signs of it being ported to the ps3. Even then, we will need a confirmation for the NA version. It's weird as how 360 is just taking everything.
