Are you seriously trying to argue that Atari 2600 games are anywhere near current gen standards to someone who grew up on the systems? Really. Games like Bumb N Jump, Burgertime, B-17 Bomber, Pitfall, etc are all fun and whatnot, but each one has been massively shown up in modern gaming. Bump N Jump is shamed by Burnout, Burgertime (Night Crawler, etc) is shown up by any modern puzzle game. How about Braid for naming one. B-17 Bomber is shamed by games like 1943 at least, and more modern games like Crimson Skies, etc. Pitfall is a platformer. Super Mario Galaxy, Braid, Prince of Persia, Crackdown, inFamous, etc all blow it away.

You are looking at gaming through very blatant and thick rose-colored glasses.

The Atari wasn't even a good system back then. And yes, I had one.

That's been a huge problem since forever. People don't know how to move on so they cling to the past. That's not to say that there aren't some timeless games out there, but when you start comparing stuff from back then to what we have now, it's sort of silly.

I think this generation of gamers are spoiled and shortsighted for the most part, and the internet has given them an overblown sense of the importance of their opinion in the overall scheme of things.. There are more outlets available to get you gaming needs than ever on the consoles and still people are complaining about how terrible EVERYTHING is.I don't know what people were expecting out of this gen, but I can't help but to think that their expectations were completely unrealistic.

As someone else said in this thread, I'm having problems keeping up with everything there are so many good games to play. I'm glad a lot of the holiday releases were pushed back to next year.

Maybe you should give handhelds a try. The DS has lots of interesting games on it. I'm sure you could find some games you'd like on it.

Agreed. I have all my old systems still in working order, and I play them from time to time, but the greats are very few and far between on those old systems, just like now. The only difference is standards now are so much higher than they were back then.

I think the major reason for this nostalgia is that many gamers caught up on past gens after the fact, so they got an NES or SNES with all the great games all at once, and there was no waiting between games, nor do they have to wade through all the junk since others did that for them and made lists of the great games to try. Where in the real world, those great games took years to get out all together, and you don't know the crap from the great right away.

Thanks. I'm really tired of hearing how awful things are. I'm having a blast playing games this gen and I've been gaming since the early days. There is so much to play and so many ways to access content, how could anybody be dissatisfied?Granted there are things about this gen that I could do without, but I think calling this gen a wash is a bit of an exaggeration.

It seems nostalgia can affect many, I do enjoy playing games from past gens and this gen as well. It seems people to expect way too much from games these days, they're just games, if you can look past very, very high expectations, you can like this gen as much as previous gens. Yeah, this gen does have it's flaws, but then again, all gens do.

My only complaint this gen is that they can't release games fast enough. The games have been astounding quality, like nothing I've saw from previous gens. When I think back to me playing arcades in the 70s, I would have freaked out had I known gaming would have advanced the way it has. Gamesplay, story, graphics, everything is just getting better. Previous gens were great for their time and I would never trash talk the older games but it's almost like a nostalgia for flint tools.

Games always take time, and with games becoming more and more complex, it will take longer. Think of it like the movie industry. When it first started, anyone would make movies, they would be low budget, somewhat cheap, and someone like Buster Keaton could make 10 a year easy. Gaming was like that. Guys in their garages or in college dorms piecing together games like Pong, Pac-Man, Star Wars!, etc.

Fast forward a few decades, and you had the 40s and 50s, where movies became more legitimate. Writing became more important, techniques got refined, and movies took longer but were a higher overall quality (usually). Just like in gaming, some people love the old times, but by and large, things are moving to more grand and deep experiences, and they take longer and cost more to get there. And hopefully like movies, games will make it mainstream after a while longer.

That's precisely why they take so long. And this is also a new era in console gaming, the HD era and I don't think they've figured out how to automate things enough to speed up the process. Licensing game engines is one way, but as the Unreal engine has shown, that doesn't always work out in your favor....

The most common one is games are getting shorter. It's either your getting better(like me:P), or you fail to realize that games back then were shorter than they are now. I recently played a lot of old games on NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, PS1, etc., and it seems unless it's an RPG, most games took less than 6 hours to beat.

The only thing that worries me about the hollywood model for gaming is that developers/publishers are raising prices rather than lowering them as the complexity progresses. If they ever truly want to become mainstream, they need mainstream prices. While the market is by no means in a crash and burn situation, it can't continue along it's current path and expect to become mainstream.

Like what? All I can think of is Cryostasis and STALKER. Unless if you're just pulling all this out of your ass then that would be more understandable.

Wait my bad...STALKER is Ukranian.

Actually in a game he (dakan45 )likes hype more than gameplay and hence he doesn't likes Russian Games as they don't have much hype (he said this himself only)

Yeah, the thing was back then there was no real save system until later and they were brutally hard. But yeah, I don't get all of the whining about short games. But I'm not the type of gamer that will finish a game in one sitting anyway. I have way too many games to play.

Prices should be about $40 higher than they are now, just going on inflation. Games now are cheaper than ever before, by a whole lot, once you factor inflation in.

That's only why games were longer, if you get through without much trouble, it'll be quick. And I have too many games to finish as well, over 10 in fact and I just brought some new games, LOL.

I understand, but gaming wasn't mainstream back then, either. I think you're looking at higher end DVD prices (20 to 30 bones) to be truly mainstream.

Take Two flirted with that with their NFL 2K5 and their budget line of games late in last generation. I thought it was a great idea, and it worked well, but then Madden got the NFL license and Take Two moved away from budget games to focus on Rockstar and other things. I would love to see another company try out that model. Maybe make a budget line of games for $30-$40. I think it would do great. Like the Greatest Hits without needing to be a Greatest Hits first.

[QUOTE="mattbbpl"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"] Prices should be about $40 higher than they are now, just going on inflation. Games now are cheaper than ever before, by a whole lot, once you factor inflation in. SpruceCaboose

I keep hoping for it, and some developers keep hinting at it (Valve's been a vocal advocate of it for years, although they have been very slow to action, possibly because until very recently they've spent a lot of time getting games out). Rare seems to be toying with the idea as well, but nothing seems to stick. Now all this Activision nonsense is getting me extremely concerned.

I agree.. aside from a few exclusives like gears and MGS4 and a few multiplats like blazblue I haven't enjoyed my consoles very much, it has reached the point where I am thinking about buying games on them just for buying games on them so I don't feel like I've wasted money.

Seriously dude, we really need either valve or monoltih or id or cytek to make us a good exclusive, too bad it aint gonna happen because they all focus on the consoles.

valve focuses on consoles?
