I knew Mercenaries 2 couldnt turn out great...FIRST REVIEW

O well, i guess I have to give it a pass and just save my money.

Silent Hill is that big??? I dint even know the game was coming out till yesterday. So its not that important IMO, both of them are meh..wont be getting neither and saving up the money for Farcry 2, Socom: C, Motorstorm: PR and R2 this year.

what about infinite undiscovery, viva pinata and rock band 2? and even force unleashed? Those are big titles as well, imo.

I am not hyping it. the online looks better than anything thats coming out on 360 or ps3. That the reason i am getting it.

why anyone thought this would score well amazes me. it's not like the last one was that great, was full of bugs and mediocre at best.

Didn't the first one get like an 8.8 here? That alone does give enough of a reason to expect good scores from Mercs 2.

I can't stress enough just how much fun it is playing in this destructive sandbox. And that fun is really Mercenaries' saving grace, because there are so many other things that are handled poorly. Were it not for the great joy of blowing s*** up, Mercs 2 would sour quickly.

There are bugs aplenty in Mercs 2. I even hit a critical bug in the last mission that crapped on the final showdown with Solano. But more than bugs, there are some really questionable design choices. You can take a tank and run over 10 vehicles, having them explode each time and take no damage. But run over a fire hydrant and your tank takes damage. Huh? Fall damage for your hero is also out of whack. The Chinese HQ is set in a temple atop a steep set of stairs. Run down those stairs and you will actually fall a few feet and take nine points of damage. The same thing happens on hillsides. If you run, you will actually lose your footing at times, drop a few feet and get hurt. And yes, this can kill if you're in the middle of a firefight.

He said it was still loads of fun so I'm getting it.

no it doesn't - not at all.

sequels scoring on par with the original is the exception here, not the rule. anyone that hyped this as good or better than the first were a bit optimistic i think ;)

merc 1 scored so well because of the concept, the reviews were held back due to a serious lack of substance on top of the concept. you could tell by watching the preview videos of 2 that this wasn't addressed in the least. keep in mind mercs 1 was one of the first games to copy the GTA open world concept, which is incredibly stale now. you can't just make more and make the explosions better and expect people to lap it up.

I wont say 7.9 is a bad score. Merc 1 was a fantastic game and so is Merc 2 :D

7.9 is a good score...it probably didn't score as well as the first because the sandbox genre has been milked and its a been there done that feeling

i'm certain its fun...the first one was pretty fun

Exactly. If you expect every game you play to be rated 9.0 or better, your gaming collection is probably skimpy as hell.
