Well, the odds are against you. In Vegas, you'd make a killing if it panned out, though.

Wow, what a bold predction. While I don't agree, props to you for accepting the ownage that is coming.

Of course, you may be insane, but you may also be a genius, so I now have a small reason to pay attention to salve so I can remember this thread.

Honestly though, Sales of these consoles don't matter so much at this point. They are both selling good, even though the Wii is spanking them both.

That being said, games are where it's at for me. :)

How so? the 360 has never been known to be a console "that flys off shelves" the 360 got a $100.00 price cut and a highly anticipated Halo 3 expansion last month and the result was it coming in last place in the US for the first time since all three consoles have been on the market. In a ironic way the 360 is sort of the same situation as Wii is only on the opposite end.. the Wii sales are stagnating because Nintendo put way too much focus on casual gamers and as a result sales have "stalled" the 360 sales have declined because MS puts way too much focus on making the 360 a more hardcore shooter console. Thats where PS3 comes in perfectly and finds middle ground with so many varying type of games that it can appeal to both casual and hardcore

Ugh. Wall of text. Forget I said anything.

Because this scenario you presented is a best case scenario for the PS3. Other huge titles have come and gone for the PS3 and while sales have increased it hasn't been anything drastic. Any of the games that come out probably won't bring the ridiculous spike that you predict. Maybe in Japan they will and maybe 360 sales will spike. And while I don't want to put words in your mouth, you speak like you assume the 360 will suddenly stop selling at all. The 360 has a great line-up next year that is sure to bring in sales. And who knows what other new things Microsoft may announce for the 360? Maybe Natal will the next big thing that makes the 360 "fly off shelves." The price was the biggest problem with the PS3 and now that the drop has finally come with holiday season looming around the corner, the PS3 should sell like it never has before. But the 360 will as well. What you predict holds some merit, but as long the 360 actually sells, I don't see it happening at all. And the PS3 was not really meant to appeal to the casual. It had a 600 dollar price tag. While that has changed now, I can't think of any games that really appeal only to the casual crowd for the PS3.

Love you signature! On topic, when you actually punch in the the numbers, this means that in 12 months the PS3 has to out-sell the 360 by 500k units! This is simply impossible!! The PS3 isn't even outselling the 360 by anything that is remotely close.

You do realize that in order to surpass the 360 in sales by the end of November 2010 (which is pretty much the same as Black Friday in terms of sales reporting) the PS3 would have to outsell the 360 by approximately 538k per month? Those are 2008 Wii numbers.

Going by your numbers (6 milion) it has to outsell the 360 by a million to 1 for 6 months or by 500,000 to 1 all year long. I dont see it happening, sorry. Good luck with that...lol

Wow that's funny..by black Friday 2010 the PS3 will make up 7 million in sales?

The spike that happened in September was because of the new $299 slim model PS3..price drop and BRAND NEW system. Lots of people were waiting for the price drop and the new Slim. I doubt the numbers will continue. I'm pretty sure most all of the people that were waiting have now picked up the new Slim or the old phat at a lower price. Some of these sales may track over into October but I will bet that the PS3 will be firmly entrenched back into 3rd place in November.

Of course maybe Sony will throw in a free PSPGo with every PS3 purchase..now that might help.

The gap is 7 million, not 6 million. Sony just recently announced that they had sold 27 million consoles, not 28 million. The Ps3 only gained 1 million units on the 360, even after a $100 price drop and complete remodeling and relaunching a new ad campaign for the system. Sales are dropping back down now, and the 360 will soon be back on top (it already is in the US). So, if the PS3 gets 7 more $100 price drops, it may catch up. Otherwise, LOL, no! It will stay dead last for the rest of the generation.

I doubt Sony will have another PS3 price drop especially if the console continues to sell well. Most likely they will just release the 250 gb PS3 for $299 next year.

Well how about not untill they make some money on each sold rather than losing money. Sony is in no position for price drops in the foreseeable future now.

Um... the difference between the two systems is around 7 million units right now. So, by your math the PS3 would be selling less than 2 million units a year... for the next 4 years. Heck, the PS3 sold more than 3 million units in the last 3 months!

So I did the math you were espousing, and it's very wrong.

Math:

Let's say the PS3 sold 28million. And let's be generous again and say that the 360 leads by only 6 million.

For the PS3 to catch up to the 360 in 12 months, it would need to sell, on the average, of 600k units per month while the 360 only sells 100k per month.

At the end of those 12 months, both would be tied at 35.2 million.

So... you think the PS3 can pull off 600k units per month for 12 months? How much did it sell again with it's recent price drop?

Here's European lifetime hardware sales as of April for one of the major retailers there. As of April, the PS3 was at 1.9 million whiile the 360 had 3.2 million. We know the 360 leads in North America. Do you have any sources regarding the PS3 worldwide lead?

Let's say the PS3 sold 28million. And let's be generous again and say that the 360 leads by only 6 million.

For the PS3 to catch up to the 360 in 12 months, it would need to sell, on the average, of 600k units per month while the 360 only sells 100k per month.

At the end of those 12 months, both would be tied at 35.2 million.

So... you think the PS3 can pull off 600k units per month for 12 months? How much did it sell again with it's recent price drop?

Neat math... but you'll have to show me where I was actually agreeing with the TC, or arguing that the PS3 will EVER overtake the 360 in total units.... Keep looking

My point was that the post I replied to had even wose "math" than the TC had... and that's no mean feat. You replied with yet another totally hypothetical sales tally to show me the error of my ways that had absolutely nothing to do with my post.

At least try to look at what I said before arguing I'm wrong.

Um... the difference between the two systems is around 7 million units right now. So, by your math the PS3 would be selling less than 2 million units a year... for the next 4 years. Heck, the PS3 sold more than 3 million units in the last 3 months!

Calm down, sparky. That wasn't directed point blank at you. Since you mentioned math, it was directed at anyone that wanted at least some math to back up a hypothetical, TC included.

That this is all hypthetical should be a given.

it wont happen in a year. It needs about 3 years to do so. But if you want my opinion, it will never happen. Check out Santrons numbers. He's right.

It will be another 2-4 years before the PS3 can overtake the 360 at this rate. By that time, there would be the successor to the 360.

yes along with 85 others who predict it will happen in 2010 so far

Except TC will accept ownage if it doesn't.

I commend you for this TC

So TC I would really like you to add your vote to this poll as well so it will be all official as I will tend to dig this poll out every month so we have record on who voted what and how far correct they are.

yeh seriously the ps3 had a good month, not spectacular but good and as such certain people need to join us back in reality price cut/new release figures are always heavily front loaded so to try and establish a trend off of this is just stupid.

SolidTy

What coming ownage? A lvl 7 with less than 200 posts making a silly prediction for next year? I doubt the account will even be active by then! :P

You do realize that in order to surpass the 360 in sales by the end of November 2010 (which is pretty much the same as Black Friday in terms of sales reporting) the PS3 would have to outsell the 360 by approximately 538k per month? Those are 2008 Wii numbers.

PBSnipes

Not to mention, these predictions of how much PS3 will sell for each month also makes assumptions (and basically relies on) that 360 will stop selling entirely for the next 12 months.
