I just dont....

PSP

  • Is multimedia (plays music, movies, games, photos, INTERNET for crying out loud)
  • Has PS3 connectivity, which does come useful (When I want to watch all the Fullmetal Alchemist episodes, I dont have to copy them to memory stick, just do remote play)
  • Has awesome 3D games (Main point, theyre 3D. How many DS games are even 3d again!?!?) like Resistance Retribution and Monster Hunter
  • Has a bigger, LCD display
  • Full access to the PSN store to download games, movies, TV episodes

DS

  • Plays games :|

I mean, I can wikipedia stuff from my PSP, directly download wallpapers, download demos, and people STILL prefer playing archaic, 2D chrono trigger amd mario!?!

WTF?!

not too up on our DS capabilities I see. Especially the new DSi The DS has WiFi built in. TONS of games out for it, like far more than the PSP has ever had. Fun and intuitive gameplay, photo capabilities (the DSi has a built in camera) etc. And oh yeah, its a Nintendo Handheld. Nough said. They've owned the handheld market since the 90s. PSP was too little, too late.

PSP is more expensive, and some people don't care about all those media features the PSP has. Most people have separate MP3 players I imagine and I wouldn't consider watching videos on my PSP that much fun. I guess it's good for traveling, but why would you watch media on your PSP when you can just do it on the TV or computer?

Some people only care about the games, and being in 3d doesn't automatically make a game better than a 2d game. I bet a lot of people just straight up prefer the game selection on the DS over the PSP. I know I do.

The DS just has better games than the PSP. I sold my DS for a PSP and well I havent used my PSP in over 6 months :|. Unlike my DS I would play it almost everyday. Plus it doesnt help that I was wanting to use my PSP for movies, games, and music BUT I can't get ahold of enough memory for that. So right now it's just collecting dust.

I guess the same reason people prefer wii over PS3/360 it has a larger fanbase little girls, boys, middle age, elderly.

All of my friends who are gamers own a ds, and are in the same position as I am. Every multimedia feature you listed for the psp I can do with my i-pod touch, 160g ipod, and my laptops. Ipods/Iphones suck for games, but I have a ds. As far as games are concerned, the DS has a better library in my opinion.

The psp is not bad by any means, but it is a jack of all trades, master of none. It has some good games and multimedia capabilites. There are other handheld devices with as good/better multimedia capabilites, and the DS has better games.

I would suggest a PSP to someone who only wants to have one handheld electronic device or can only afford one thing. Otherwise I'd suggest a DS for games and something else for mp3/movies/etc.

1) Internet Some have their Blackberries, others their iPhones : either way, chances are if you have internet access on your PSP, you are already at home, accessing your own router, in which case you already have a PC nearby with 100x the speed and power and efficiency to run the net. 2) Music Seriously, PSP owners putting that hulking piece of hardware in their pockets while taking a walk in the park? Most of us already have a portable music player in some form of shape, an iPod, iRiver, Zune, or even a mobile phone for music playback. 3) Movies Why watch movies and drain the battery when you can play games? Newer generation iPod owners can already watch media on their devices, and seriously, who here watches movies on their PSP legally, by purchasing UMD discs? The DS is first and foremost designed as a handheld gaming device, the true successor to Nintendo's GameBoy Line. Nintendo has always been king of handheld gaming, and will remain so for years to come. With a lengthy battery life, adjustable bright LCD screen, touch feature controls, very fast loading times, compact size, mic, built-in wireless and newly added camera, along with its foldable design, the DS is in every way a more suitable portable gaming device than the PSP to meet the expectations of gamers on the go. Its games are generally priced lower than the PSP's, and a has a large third-party support with a constant stream of first-party support by Nintendo themselves. The cheap cost of the system translated to more sales over the PSP. The low cost of making games for the system also means smaller developer costs and consequently, more contribution per studio. The ever-increasing sales for the device also means a larger install base, which once again, encourages support for developers. And finally, its delivery in AA-AAA quality games almost every month (due to its sheer support by devs and owners) ensures it stays afloat, even amidst economic crisis and the PSP's competitive games.

The PSP only offers games that I would rather play on a console. Instead of playing stuff like Resistance Retribution that tries hard to be a console game I prefer to play games that are actually meant for handhelds. I don't care for that multimedia nonsense. I don't want my toaster to connect to the internet or my calculator to play movies either.

^ Pretty much sums it up. The Media Thingi is cool, but absolutely not necessary. The PSP atm has not much games that interest me.. especially it has no games I just play "for a walk". VC2 and the upcoming MGS aren't games I can just play while sitting in the train or bus.. DS however fits the role as a portable gaming device much much better. The Games are more suited imo :) (And there are tons of games to choose from too)

I hardly touch my PSP these days. My ipod and mobile phone cater most of my multimedia needs.

The DS has more games that I'm interested in, unlike the PSP.

In a word, the DS has a handheld feel to it the PSP has not. Sure, the PSP has better graphics, but hey, a PS3 and a 360 have much better graphics compared to a PSP, and the PSP does nothing to try and offer a different experience, (not to talk about the lacking 2nd thumbstick) so what's the point?

1) because the ds has the most AAAs,AAs,and A this gen including consoles.

2)longer battery

3)like somone said, i would rather play the psp games on a console.

4)psp has good games don't get me wrong, but since you "forgot" all the other functions of the DSi its quite clear you're biased.

5) Ds has more and better multiplayer games

6) i own both, so i know what i'm talking about

Coming from a sony fanboy, actually I'd rather have gotten a DS back then instead of a psp. Multimedia capabilities in a portable device is useless when the storage is extremely limited, which is the case for the psp. I only have 4gb MS stick, and what on earth could I put in there, one movie? And I'm too lazy to transfer songs and videos back and forth every single day just to manage my space.

If I buy a gaming device, I expect it to play games well and then worry about the other stuff later. Now I've missed out on a lot of games on the ds.

Better games, more appealing to younger gamers. Suitable for both casual players or the more hardcore crowd. Slight cheaper (games and system).

PSP is OK, but I liked the DS library far more and decided to buy a DS instead. Although I'm getting a PSP, too. I prefer the DS's library and don't see why a gaming handheld has to also be a multimedia player, so those features don't interest me.

It's ok to not understand, just don't criticize them for having a different preference than you. Oh yeah, and there's your explanation. Different people with different preferences and different ideals about worth will yield different results. Neither option is right or wrong. Just different. Isn't individuality great? I think so, at least...

I have both and mainly play on my PSP through Monster Hunter, Phantasy Star multiplayer and some other RPG's. The DS is good for what it does but outside of Castlevania and a few RPG's like Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem can't hold my attention very long anymore, probably just cause i don't have the time.

hhmm..

It seems the key word often brought up is GAMES!

The PSp is an ok system but it suffers from the same identity crysis like it's bigger brother PS3, yet it has it worse.

It is known that the PS3 is used often then not for it's multimedia capabilities and it is fairly good at it followed by being a games machine.

The PSP is not simple and intuitive enough to act like a portable multimedia device (A Sony exec proudly proclaimed it "The walkman of the 21st century")

but there are better portable multimedia devices out there and are far more simple, convenient and have better easier online support - The Iphone/Ipodand Itunesphenomenal.

The PSP also doesn't have the games library like Nintendo DS has(is the DS backwards compatable?), the UMD for movies really hurt the PSP and well...

I guess it's stuck between a rock and a hard place- not good enough as a multimedia device compared to the alternative Iphone/Ipod and not enough of a games machine with a library that rivals the other alternative the DS.

oh..

and it doesn't help either when the next iteration- the PSP GO costs the way it does! when it should be cheaper being that it is UMD Driveless and the middleman is cut out since you can get the content online.

what the heck?!?!

I only want to game on my handheld, I don't need all those extra features. And since I only want to game with it, I chose the handheld with the best games and that's the DS.

And about those 3D games, I love 2D games so it doesn't matter to me that there aren't much 3D games on the DS ( which is not true, there are pretty much 3D games on the DS)

I personally prefer the DS because I kinda feel most PSP games try (and fail) to emulate console games. For example GoWCoO, SAC, MGSPO or RR. All great games, and tech masterpieces for a handheld. But... I can play the bigger and better versions of those experiences on a PS2, which kinda takes the point of a handheld to me (to offer something different than the consoles I already have).

I love my DS because of the games. With a system, the games are that matters to me, all the other features are extra fluff that I'll probably never use. I love my DS for Final Fantasy IV, the three Castlevana titles, Advance Wars; Days of Ruin, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, The Ace Attorney Games, the Sonic Rush games, Dragon Quest IV, V, and IX, New Super Mario Brothers, and Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. And those games I listed are just tips of the iceberg. For me personally, I prefer the DS library over the PSP's library.

This may shock you TC, but I don't need 3-D to enjoy a game. 2-D done well can impress me just a much as any 3-D game.

I have a PSP phat and a DSi but I play with my DSi most of the time because I love RPGs and the DS is overflowing with great RPGs. Online games like Phantasy Star 0 and Bomberman Blitz are great too, If I want to play a game with amazing 3D graphics I will use my PS3 or PC. As for multimedia purposes I have a desktop PC, laptop and ipod touch.

amazing thing is that ipod touch does all of that (excluding ps3 and sony exclusive things you listed)and according to gamespot beat psp in games this year.

Doesnt beat ds though.

People bought the DS to play games, and it delivers big time on that aspect. Millions of people can attest to that fact. I plan on getting a PSP later in the year and I could care less about the media functions.

Also marketing.

DS is seen as a friendly, easy-to-use system with a touch screen while PSP is a portable PSX-2 mostly for gamers who... already played for years on a PS2...

Hopefully Sony learns from its mistakes like Nintendid.

DS has a bigger, and better library of games without insane amounts of loading time. Also it's easier to take with you because the screen folds up nicely to prevent scratches.

More people prefer the DS over the PSP simply because the games that the DS have are far better than the one that found on PSP, not to mention the gaming library is vastly superior than the PSP library. As for multimedia, all we are doing is just simply paying extra money for stuff that we already have elsewhere. When I buy handheld I simply buy it for games, and the multimedia are stuff that I already have access to on other format.
