Those were the games that drew me into console gaming. I'm sure many became console gamers from those same games. And I'm sure many others became console gamers because of a certain local multiplayer space marine game that came out in 2001 and became played at pretty much every single party through out the country. Naughy Dog is missing the fact that most casual gamers buy games after playing them at a friends house and most people get into console gaming by playing local multiplayer games at parties when they're at a friends house. That's how practically everyone gets introduced to console gaming and gets hooking. Taking away the local multiplayer is a bad long term strategy. The gamers that don't care about local multiplayer at all become PC gamers. If all you care about is singleplayer and online, there is no reason not to simply game on the PC exclusively. I mean look at the smash hit success of a certain console featuring motion controls. Does anyone here think it would have succeed if it wasn't for it's flagship local multiplayer pack in game. Or it's smash hit local multiplayer kart racing game. Or it's local multiplayer four player fighing game. If those three games were single player and online only affairs, the console would have been such a smash hit. Does anyone think that console's upcoming local multiplayer four player platformer won't be the biggest selling game of this holiday season? Local multiplayer does matter, a lot. About an year and a half ago, I got rid of a competing console for the PS3 and I'm happy with everything else, except that the PS3 doesn't have many flagship games that feature splitscreen multiplayer or local multiplayer. The competing console had several flagship games that are built around local multiplayer and in my opinion, that one aspect was far better for it. It's always a blast to play with your friends when they're over at your house, and they're sitting next to you. I have friends over all the time, and we love to game. Back when I had the competing console, there were a number of local multiplayer games to choose from. Now it seems like there's only a scant few. The PS3 is the most single-player oriented console this generation. No wonder my brother wanted to sell it. He might as well play on the PC. Well, actually, he wants to buy the 360, saying that the fee for Live doesn't matter, but I've convinced him otherwise for now. In fact, my dad had bought the PS3 for us a year ago, and we thought that the social gaming that occured with our PS2 (before it broke) might continue with the PS3, but he spends most of his gaming time on the PC, and I play the PS3 once every two weeks or so. Now when I have friends over, we're stuck playing my consoles from last generation or even two generations ago. Classic games like Twisted Metal, or a certain shooter featuring James Bond or Joanna Dark, or Karts, or a certain fighting game that featured 4 player combat on screen at once, Timesplitters, or a game featuring a certain space marine and so many other games from both Sony and it's competitors are still a blast to play today because they feature local multiplayer. The sheer joy of shooting down your friends and talking smack to them when they're sitting right next to you at a party simply can't be substituted by online, I'm sorry. I mean when I first heard that Uncharted 2 features co-op and multiplayer and might feature split screen I was ecstatic, because I really wanted to enjoy the game at parties with friends. Then it was revealed that it's multiplayer modes are online only which feels like a great missed oppurtunity. It's such a massive shame that Uncharted 2 doesn't have split screen. I won't not buy a game because of lack of split screen but its disappearance in a number of games is just baffling. Won't buy games at full price without replayibilty or long length. Split screen is one of the defining features for me.
well they didnt even need to put co-op in the game in the first place. why cant people just be happy with what they got. and who cares about your freind you cant please everyone with a ps3. and if you do want split screen there are other games out there. one great one for example is warhawk it has slit screen (up to 4 people)on and off line no story modejust fighting though

Yes, Gears of War 2 truly looks horrible in splitscreen. Oh wait, it doesn't. It's still awesome. So that excuse is nonsense. The lack of splitscreen in Uncharted 2 won't stop me from buying it of course. Loved the first part and I'm sure I will love the sequel even more. Can hardly wait. Still I would have enjoyed splitscreen co-op. Playing with somebody next to you is fun, plain and simple. I don't get why somebody would deny that. Unless that somebody has no soul or no real life friends. For me online will never be as enjoyable as local multiplayer. Come back, splitscreen! The world needs you. So how's 4 player splitscreen in Gea..Oh wai... 4 player splitscreen>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>2 player splitscreen. You can't have a party with just 2 people playing while everyone else watches. Oh, people are asking for local multiplayer. Why do you think the Wii sells, and people bash it as "being only good for parties"? The devs' care factor is evident from Wii's third party support and the decline of local multiplayer on PS3 and Xbox360.

Not just shooters. Racers, some platformers, all sorts of games were made popular by local multiplayer.
Yeah you are right, i mean in motorstorm pacific rift, i just go multiplayer and put 2 player split screen. In Halo and Gears 2 i go to multiplayer and then have to either load another account or load a temp profile
NOt all games are about muiltiplayer. Uncharted was a single player experience so why the surprise that you dont get co-op. be happy to at least get compeditivemuiltiplayer.
Didn't read it but I saw comparisons to Halo so I stop caring. Honestly I love split-screen multi-player but this game is a must buy for single player and then it's got MP. It's going to be a great game
I agree wholeheartedly with TC. Recently, I have been doing less and less gaming and the only gaming I usually do is with friends. One thing that really puts me off of the PS3 is its attachment to graphics and all these gimmicks that gets old within a couple of hours. Killzone 2 can have the best graphics it wants, but I cannot sink enough time into it because me and my friends will not be playing it when we are together. Halo 3, GoW2, Mario Kart Wii, and Brawl on the other hand, have been played over and over again not because they look good (because they don't), not because they are triple-A games (they are arguably derivative), but because me and my friends can get together and just play online or together.
If you actually read the post, I agree. Co-op has definately been lacking this gen. I'm not saying every game must have co-op but a lot should. Playing Halo 3 is still fun because I can play 4 player co-op with my friends. Yeah, you can do this online, but if they are at your house, it's boring watching someone play. Some games like COD really jumped the shark to, they have co-op campaign, but not online play. Still, I would't miss out on U2 because of this, so be glad that some games do have co-op.
Alright I read the whole thing. Yeah, it seems the PS3 is lacking in this area of games. I can't even begin to understand why. Playing with a bud is part of the fun. I always enjoyed MP within the same room more than online.

lOl. SO TRUE! I started reading it but I got up to the, "My friend came over" and I was thinking, 'oh ok'. I don't think anyone cares about TC's fake friends. New Account also. Gamespot should seriously make it only level 5's or higher can post or something. They can introduce new methods for people to level up, maybe giving them more exp for voting or something.

While I love split-screen multiplayer, a game not having its not going to make me not buy it. Also TC if you aren't going to buy games that don't have split-screen multiplayer then how many games do you own this gen? Like 4 or 5? Cos the only system that really still has split-screen multiplayer is Wii.
