The Ps3 has the lowest hardware and software sales of all 3 system how exactly do they pan to keep a system with the least exclusive thrid party support, least developer friendly hardware and most expensive production costs?

To last that Long a console needs

  • Largest Userbase (Wii)
  • Highest Monthly Hardware Sales WW (Wii/Ds)
  • Highest Monthly Software sales (Wii/Ds)
  • Abundant Exclusive Third Party Support (Xbox360/Wii)
  • A Masterful marketing (Wii/Nintendo)
  • Reasonable or lowest price (Wii)

Lets not forget about the infamous amount of 3 billion dollars sony lost with the Ps3, why do they lie to the costumer so blatantly promising something that its clearly impossible? The Ps3 will never surpass The Wii or 360's userbases and that alone nails the coffin for that ridiculous plan.

Sony has never had a 10 year console cycle, they have ALLways released between 6-7 years after the launch of the previous generation.

The console can remain in the market even if their predecessor is released (Ps2 for example), sony allegedly wants the Ps3 to last TEN years in the market which is laughable imo.

Look how long the PS2 lasted...and how long they supported it for, why does it seem impossible? Your basically saying that as time goes on the PS3 gets worser, lol.

Bluray was part of the plan.

Sony backs the plan up with what they did with the PS2, lets just wait and see.

BTW, PS2's been out since 2000 in japan.

remaining on the market is different then a cycle a cycle basically means a generation, and sony has never had a 10 year generation. I just wanted to clear that up for the cows that would come in saying they'd done it before.

The sole reason the PS1 and PS2 remained in the market was because they were popular enough to warrant it. Unless the PS3 starts selling well (which it's not),it makes no sense for sony to keep a dead weight product on shelves for an entire decade.

Welll that really all depends. While the Playstation did kinda came to a grinding halt after seven years, it still got a game every now and then. So technically it was alive for ten years.
And I'd say the PS2 has another few years before it comletly dies out. It's still getting games and they still sell fairly well. Just last year it had a few games that made it past the million mark.

The rest of the year will see the release of some pretty big PS2 games as well. Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Dragon Ball Z Infinite World, Rockband 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Sonic Unleashed, Spider-man: Web of Shadows and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.

I wouldn't call it a "sinking ship", but simply a ship that's not magically flying through space like the PS2.

thats awsome when you have a console thats cheaper and more established plus everything is outselling the 360 in japan so that makes no sense to even include it.

Ok, then I'll use my amazing powers of common sense and say, yes there's a "chance" it will, but there's a much much higher chance that it won't.

by 10 years they mean it will be supported for 10 years, not their primary console. they will probably release a ps4 in 2011.

i own a ps3, but i'd rather move on to the next console then play outdated games for an outdated console. (like ps2 now). and i like the 360, so the next ms console will hurt the outdated ps3 even more. there's no way they will keep the ps3 running like the ps2, it just isn't selling as well, and won't.

At this point, it's hard to tell whether or not Sony will continue to support the PS3 after the PS4 is released. Really I can see PS3 getting like 8 years if Sony learned not to rush out the gate next gen.

It will be around for 10 years, but not all those 10 years as Sony's most current generation model. By 2011-2012, we'll see the PS4 (or what ever it'll be called).

So it'll be 5-6 years as the current gen model.
4-5 years as the last gen model

Just like it was for PS2 and PS1 before it. Of course when PS4 comes out, it will overshadow the PS3, taking away the spotlight and glory as the hot new shining star.

PS1 production stoped in 2005 or 2006, thats 11-12 years on the market, PS2 is going strong and is going into its 9th year. I see no reason why PS3, which has a better sale record then the PS2, shouldn't be able to do the same as long as Sony comits to it.

To last that Long a console needs

  • Largest Userbase (Wii)
  • Highest Monthly Hardware Sales WW (Wii/Ds)
  • Highest Monthly Software sales (Wii/Ds)
  • Abundant Exclusive Third Party Support (Xbox360/Wii)
  • A Masterful marketing (Wii/Nintendo)
  • Reasonable or lowest price (Wii)

Lets not forget about the infamous amount of 3 billion dollars sony lost with the Ps3, why do they lie to the costumer so blatantly promising something that its clearly impossible? The Ps3 will never surpass The Wii or 360's userbases and that alone nails the coffin for that ridiculous plan.

AgentA-Mi6

the PS2 is selling for 8 years so far, 10 years is not so hard to achieve looking at Sony's past consoles, the PS3 is only 2 years old, "just wait".

The PSP has sold roughly twice as many units as the XBox360 and they were released around the same time. I get a huge chuckle everytime some hater calls it a failure. I wish I has stock invested in that "failure"

I hope you don't think Sony plans to release the PS4 in 2016...that's not what meant by "10-year plan". The PS3 will probably be replaced in 2011, but they'll still manufacture it the way they still manufacture the PS2 now.

It is doing well. Especially if you consider that noone has ever found this much success competing with Nintendo in the handheld market. And it's still selling nicely in the US, Europe, and especially in Japan.

Coming from a former Sony hater, I remember quite a few people still owning and enjoying their original playstations after PS2 was released, and games were still released even a few years after PS2 came out. The same can be said about PS2, which is still going strong and still has games being released for it almost a decade after its release. I think it's safe to say Sony is successful in making their systems lifespan last a long time, much like Nintendo did with the NES and SNES in the 90s. Too bad the same can't be said for Microsoft, who had the shortest console lifespan last generation with the original Xbox being released last in the prior generation, and 360 being the first released this generation. PS3 has a lot of potential and is far more future proof than Xbox 360.

All new systems will launch at the end of 2011, giving the 360 the longest life this gen. i suspect the ps3 to cease manufacture 1st, since sony said it may lose money the entire gen. due to the ease of development and sales, 360 will get 3rd party games the longest as well.

This has been debated to hell and back. As long as there is still games coming out for the system the thing will last, look at the PS2. And as long as Sony has first party studios, and theres companies like EA that continue to put games on literally all platforms, the thing will last. It doesn't mean it will take 10 years for another one to come out.

Yeah and PS2 sold over 110 million units too....doesn't mean the PS3 will. I do think the PS3 will last 10 years, but not just because the PS2 did, but for different reasons altogether.

The last "big" PS2 game was God of War 2. From then to now, it's mostly been sports titles, licensed movie games (mostly terrible), and maybe a few RPG's here and there, along with some other stuff. Most PS2 online games, maybe all, are offline now because the servers were taken down. But Sony will continue manufacturing PS2 consoles and accessories, so I think that's what they consider a "10-year plan". And they'd be dumb not to continue producing PS2's because they still sell like hotcakes, even if most of the new PS2 titles are third-party trash.

Imagine PS3 sometime around 2013-2016, still being produced by Sony - probably at a $150 price point or lower. It would essentially be a $150 Blu-Ray player and that would probably keep selling for a while I would guess.

Hopefully it will have thousands of games by then, being just a Damn BR player is sad for a machine meant to be a gaming console.

Oh I'm sure it'll have a great deal of games by that time anyway. Blu-Ray movies won't be the only selling point, but they'll certainly help out.

I'm gonna dig up this thread in 10 years for future ownage :DSpinoRaptor

Do you think... you'll post in this forum in ten years from now?

Anyway, the Ps3 shouldn't last long after the Ps4 is released for less than 300 $ XD!!!!!!!!! 260$? 230$?

Im sure they will remember what happens when you release a 600$ console, it works wonders to your market share :D!

Maybe they meant it like the PS2, it's still getting games but PS3 is already released for almost 2 years now.

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"]Sony has never had a 10 year console cycle, they have ALLways released between 6-7 years after the launch of the previous generation.

WilliamRLBaker

The console can remain in the market even if their predecessor is released (Ps2 for example), sony allegedly wants the Ps3 to last TEN years in the market which is laughable imo.

remaining on the market is different then a cycle a cycle basically means a generation, and sony has never had a 10 year generation. I just wanted to clear that up for the cows that would come in saying they'd done it before.

Errrrr, Sony specifically said 10 year life span, not cycle. Therefore, it means 10 years on the market rather than 10 years before they release another console.....
