I hope this is the right place to put this, if not Mods please lock.

With the anouncement of Warner going to Blu ray and leaving HD-DVD, Microsoft most defiantly won't intigrate a HD-DVD drive in it's console becuse HD-DVD is pretty much dead. So, next gen Sony will still be using Blu ray disc while the Xbox will still be using DVD9? Or will sony let Microsoft use thier format? Becuase with DVD9 it is NOT truly 1080p high definition. If Sony doesn't let M$ use their, format how will M$ make any games? Surely gamers will not want a played out DVD9 format:?

Oh, and one more thing, the Next PS3 will have a HD drive while the 360 won't. That will lead more people to buy the PS3, Am I right? Let me know what you guys think...

sirk1264

Why would sony not let microsoft use their disc format for the next gen. If that happens microsoft won't allow blu-ray drives be implemented into windows. Both will need each other if blu-ray does indeed become the next format.

actually i dont see why they would want to...sony doesnt need microsoft to sell blu-ray players for them, they do make their own blu-ray players and im sure that some how any players made by panasonic, etc wud bring them some sort of profit, or maybe some spot light some how.

and i dont think blu-ray is actually owned by SONY, they are apart of the organization or whateva but they dont own who gets to use it and such...thats what ive heard, does anybody know if its true? if it is true, then why would microsoft ever bring out the format used by its rival?? im sure they wouldnt do it, that would be so ironic, not to mention that they could still use dvd9 or whatever, didnt they say that HD isnt needed? or was that just lemmings? (along with ther, blu-ray isnt needed as well < i agree with that one, but blu-ray gives the chance for games to be better...try imaginin mass effect with heaps more space to work with...but thats an arguement for a slightlydiff topic, so i dont wanna spoil the TC's thread here :))

This only matters if people next gen will be wanting a blu-ray as part of their games console. Personally I never used my PS2 as a DVD player and likewise never my 360. I couldn't care less about it playing movies, so to this end MS could still put a HDDVD drive in there, you get the extra storage and true hd...only real things that effect gaming. So ye, it depends. If MS want the nextbox to be a multimedia centre in a box then bluray will be in. However I have a feeling they'll look at the Wii and the PS3, compare the sales, and see you don't need a GAMES console to do a whole load of other crap in order to sell well.

I still dont believe that either format will end up successful even though the bluray has the upper hand. It just wont have enought time to be able to shine and that is why MS issupporting Hddvd just so it puts a speed bump in Bluray. Flash prices are dropping fast andcompression keeps getting better. I wouldnt doubt Hd movies being compressed with high quality video and fitting on a Dvd9. Plus digital downloads are getting popular and hard drives are getting cheaper and cheaper. I wouldnt doubt MS or Sony letting you put you own external HD to store all your games. Obviously they will find a way to try to block hackers. Hey you can buy and download a game on the pc, why not let the consoles do it too. That give devs all the space they want to create a game and the transfer speed would be greater than any disc. My opinion but I see it happening. Oh if MS knocked on Sony door to use bluray, Sony will glady let them usesince that is their cash cow.

Uhm have you learned nothing from the whole UMD incident? I mean they didn't even compete with anything because the DS had NOTHING. Yet the UMD didn't do the PSP much good. So what if they got Blue-Ray we won't see it really hit the market if ever in at least a couple of years. It's not like public is rushing out and buying themselves Blue-Ray players.

If that happens then Sony will just make a really unfair deal... something dumb like no exclusive games to go to 360, if they come in Blu!

i dont think Sony would let Blu-ray go to the 360, because then that would mean that people would start buying 360's planning on playing blu-ray movies, if thing go how they are right now ps3 will be one of the few cheapest blu-ray players. i dont think sony would want people to buy a 360 so they get a Blu-ray player...if people bought a ps3 as a blu-ray player, they might see a game they might like and buy that straight away, if you think about it people would buy nice looking games, that get their interest at the spare of the moment kinda deals. and even if people didnt buy a game and just blu-ray movies, thats still a console sold for Sony.

The next xbox won't even use an optical drive for gaming, MS is going to push digital downloads very soon and having digital downloads for the next xbox will be a part of that. Hell, if you watched Microsoft's keynote at CES, you would see how focused they are on digital entertainment.

  1. Sony can always license Blu_ray out for other companies use.
  2. Microsoft can make their own format for game or whatever, just like Nintendo does, at least that's what I heard they do.

Tech-Man08

Are you sure? I think I heard that Nintendo also uses DVD9

Nope WiiDisc, or something like that. It certainly can't play DVDs.

In case you didn't realise, sony makes MICROSOFT computers that use MICROSOFT WINDOWS. MICROSOFT WINDOWS. MICROSOFT windows. sony also make players that are only compatible with MICROSFT media player and/or sonic stage which is only compatible with MICROSFT WINDOWS. sony and microsoft are competitors in the gaming world, it does not mean they're enimies.

I'm pretty sure MicroSoft already make money off the Codecs that BD uses.

Is Blu-ray using VC1 ?

Yep, thats the one.

So does this mean that either way MSgains ?

most blu-ray movies - something like half - are still using mpeg-2. it's pretty lame. i think they're using newer codecs more often now, though.

NowI guess this warrants its own post since it's repeated so often, but for the 13456348972th time, in terms of games the disc has ZERO to do with the resolution. All that matters is the power of the hardware trying to run the game. Most PC games are DVD9, a single DVD at that, and are running... what, 1600P? Most Blu-Ray PS3 games are actually running somewhere around 720P at best, sometimes lower, like 600P. For a movie, it's a different story.

It would require a math matician to figure out how to replace your HD-DVD player(Or your lack of one) with a Blu-Ray drive!

To the TC. Going by your logic, I don't see why Microsoft can't continue to use HD-DVD.

Just because a majority of movie studios are now backing Sony's Blu-ray over Toshiba's HD-DVD video format that Microsoft backed does not mean Microsoft wouldn't be able to continue using HD-DVD as a format for Xbox 360 if it is required to make games that require larger disc space.

Just in case you didn't know. In the last video format war of JVC's VHS video tape vs Sony's Betamax video tape. JVC won back in the 1980s and Sony continued to make Beta VCRs all the way to the mid 1990s.

Sony uses plenty of MS software and MSlicensedproduct in their gear, . unless Sony wants to play hardball with a company that can outright buy them or at least make it tough to use MS products in their gear, they wouldn't be that foolish to open up that can of worms. My thought is that MS will license out the ability for a 3rd party to come in and make a bluray add-on just like the one that's out now, that's if bluray takes off. People are NOT eager to replace their dvd libraries with another format at the moment, NOT going into a recession, and not when a good upscaling dvd player looks pretty darn good. Also, downloads are the next big thing anyway, people want to do everything from there computers, including renting HD movies.
