I want to go back to PC but a decent graphics card alone (AMD RADEON HD 6870 for example) costs £184 which is more than the price of an Xbox 360. plus I'd have to buy all the other components and put them all together (Which I've never one before). I could get a AMD RADEON HD 5770 which is quite common in budget gaming machines for £117 but that cards quite date right now and wouldn't last long- especially if you look at the recommended specs for Shogun 2.

Yes I could just buy a PC but most places put in low-end or cheap graphics cards into their products so you end up with a CPU or RAM heavy machine that's poor on graphics. IF you want a machine with good graphics you end up paying a lot more than you would expect.

Also I think sometimes there are far too many options out there with PC- Yes I know it sounds crazy but with consoles you have a couple of different SKUs with identical hardware.

Companies should make MORE gaming PCs and make them simpler, less complicated and stop selling shoddy low end graphics cards and pretend that they are really powerful. YOU should see how a dedicate graphics card like the 5770 is touted on many sites as a powerful card.... it's NOT!

but the 5770 is a powerful card - compared to consoles. if you don't like it, you're not at all obliged to buy it.

The 5770 is plenty powerful to be qualified as a gaming card, sure it isn't a gtx 590, but it is significantly more powerful than what is equipped in the consoles.

who told you a 6870 is needed for good graphics a 5770 1G is good for running games at 1080p at a graphical fidelity and smoothess a 360 can only dream of achieving. a 6870 would really only be a requirment for people gaming at 2560x1600/1440 resolutions at 1920x1200 and below its a good card just going to leave these videos of crysis 1 both running on a 5770 1G at 1920x1080 fully playable

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=carhSWLCaZM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTgIvVs5tYY&feature=related

and the newer game of crysis 2

Pc parts are much more expensive in Europe apparently. You can get a 5770 for around $100 here.

the 5770 is quite a lot better than a GTS240. why did you criticise if you did not understand?

having the highest setting doesn't always mean you get the best eye candy. Bad Company 2's bloom effects are utterly distracting and will burn your eyes.

The HD 5770 is a very good video card...

PC hardware isn't very difficult to understand... and you can always come visit us at the PC hardware forum...

Buying a pre-built PC for gaming is a stupid idea...

Buy PC, pay $50 for a shop or the website to build it. Everything he said is still true, and you don't even have to touch the components.

then buy a console because you're clearly not getting the maximum performance for your money if you buy prebuilt. you can get close, but never as close as if you build it yourself.

It is a stupid idea though. You hardly ever get good value for money with pre-built. Pre-builts almost always come with sub-par quality components (PSU, case, mobo) or are absurdly expensive.

All it takes to build a PC is a little research, some forum assistance for part selection, and a good guide.

"plus I'd have to buy all the other components and put them all together" You don't have a PC just lying around? Did you post from a console? Or waste money on something that is utterly gutless and lacks a pci-e slot/a laptop?

"(Which I've never one before)" PC's are easier to put together than a lego set, all you have to do is buy stuff that's compatible, correct mobo, cpu and ram, and not go cheap on the psu. (wouldn't recommend a cheap case either, sure is a pain if you skimp there)

There are plenty of topics on the PC hardware and pc/mac games (although they're not supposed to be there..) with good builds for certain price ranges, or you can start your own thread there and specify a price range.

i agree the game looks so much better without the ugly ass bloom that only serves to make it more difficult to spot people from a distance

Maybe for the rare PC exclusive games, but console ports won't push it much more than anything else out there (ie crysis) 'til the next gen.

Basically, if you build a computer after all the 3 next gen consoles come out, you won't have to upgrade 'til the next, next gen rolls along, unless you want to, and that can be as little as a video card.

outdated? no....Battlefield 3 doesn't come out for about 8 months, and even then BF3 will be the only game that makes the 5770 struggle a bit. Honestly it probably won't be "outdated" until the next gen of consoles starts coming out

Outdated to an enthusiast maybe. If you really value maxing the big titles like Crysis, BF3, Metro 2033 etc at 1920x1080 or more then you shouldn't even be looking at the HD 6870, nevermind the HD 5770. You should be looking at the HD 6950 minimum.

Most PC gamers are prefectly satisfied with maxing the majority of games. Maxing every single game with high anti-aliasing & high resolution (over 1080p) isn't a concern to most of us.

it actually will be outdated by definition but it won't be obsolete for a couple more years and will continue to run game well at 1920x1080 for at least 2 years.

No it wont. It will be (already is really) obsolete, but that doesnt mean that its a bad card. My friend just built a PC with one in it and hes maxing everything thing 1080p.

so basically I spend £117 on a card that will start to struggle in 8months? guess I'll have to get the 6870 which will give me what? an extra 12 months before a new game starts to cause that to struggle? I don't mind spending money on gaming just it's a bit annoying having your machine going out of date so quickly. how do you guys do it? does overclocking help keep an old machine going or something? or is it a case of updating 1 component every 18months or so?

i bought an 8800GTS and it lasted me for 5 years. I have no doubt in my mind that my GTX580 will last me comparable. your card will not struggle in 8 months.

Do you Have to run the game maxxed out? I'm not upgrading for BF3, my HD5850 may commit suicide, but I'm sure as hell playing that game on it. It's SO rare for a game to really push a video card, since the Vast majority are ports, BF3 is the only exception, maybe the Witcher 2(which are both obviously PC first dev'd games).

Lawlz, my 5850 is already committing suicide. To the point, even if a game pushes a video card for max settings, you can still most likely get excellent image quality without max settings.

Im still running a 4890. When people say struggle they really mean tone down the AA a bit or you will dip into the 30 FPS zone (which is standard for consoles)

just looked at the price of the 6950 - roughly the same as 2x 5770 cards.

there's just too many options with PC gaming. so many types of CPUs, RAM,PSUs, graphics cards, motherboards, HDD.

how on earth anyone managed decide what to get I don't know!

I want to play Shogun 2 without any problems and I want it to look GOOD but I don't want my machine to be struggle next year when a new game comes out.

can anyone help me?

If you don't want to build your own try a company like cyberpower. If you are in the Uk they will build you a custom PC to your spec at a very very reasonable price. www.cyberpowersystems.com Just remember, you don't need the latest and greatest PC. My old duel core with an 8800gts still plays 80% of games at the highest levels. It plays 100% of games at much higher graphical levels than consoles.

Your starting to come across as if you have an agenda :? I said Battlefiled 3 will make it struggle a bit on max settings, thats ONE game, that will look beautiful on medium. Are you a huge Battlefield 3 fan and a graphics snob???

I have had the 8800gt for years, every game I play looks pretty good on it. The games I play usualy don't even push it (Gary's Mod, CSS, etc). The 5570 makes the 8800gt look like an oudated piece of crap, but the 8800gt satisfies me and the games I like to play on it.

My PC has been going on for 3 years without a single update (only had to replace bad RAM, but lifetime warranty :D). Seriously, shop well and smart and you're golden. I built my comp for around $1500 CAD. Not a lot of money at all considering the amount of time I got out of it.

I've got no Agenda! I'm just saying that PC gaming is potentially very confusing for the unimformed. I loved playing Rome: Total War on my laptop (before it broke) I loved Age of Empires 3. I want to play the new Shogun game and other RTS games like World in Conflict and also Rise of Flight looks good. I think PC gaming is VERY good when you've got a GOOD machine. the issue for me is GETTING that good machine!

I am not insulting PC gaming or PC gamers- I'm just saying that getting into it, for me, is confusing. and I have an A-level in computers.

how on earth anyone managed decide what to get I don't know!

I want to play Shogun 2 without any problems and I want it to look GOOD but I don't want my machine to be struggle next year when a new game comes out.

can anyone help me?

Make a thread on the PC Hardware forum and they will tell you pretty much anything you need to do (and much more)

Yup. The regulars there are very helpful if you ask me :P

oh okay, we probably just have different beliefs on what the word "struggle" means :P If you buy a good card it will last you for years just like consoles do. Once in awhile a demanding game will come along and raise the bar when it comes to technical graphics. If you can't max that new game out then you go into the options and change a few settings down and then the game will run smooth for you, it might lack some new effects but it will still look amazing graphicaly. Besides the enthusiasts most of the PC gaming community is fine with turning some graphical settings down, its not a bad thing.

When I said "struggle" I meant the 5570 might not get over 30 frames per second in Battlefield 3 on max detail. But if you lower the settings you will get smooth framerates and gameplay and I'm sure the game will look amazing even with some settings on medium :D

Like I said, if you are in UK try the site I mentioned, or just google custom PC. Many places will guide you through what you want for your budget. Unlike other countries it isn't that much more than building one yourself. Also this recommended specs on Shogun 2 are ver forgiving. I think I'm about the same spec as recommended. I run everything on Ultra and get flawless performance at 1920x1080 and my system is hardly cutting edge.

hmm I think what I'll do is save up my money now, wait for BF3 to come out and buy a machine from that custom site in the region of £900-£1000. atm I can only afford £600. I've been tinkering with options on that site and the gaming machines REALLY start getting good in the £800 plus region. When BF3 comes out the performance benchmarks will be available so I can see which medium-end card handles it the best. If I choose wisely and am prepared to pay a bit more it will give my machine more longevity.

[QUOTE="MIYAMOTOnext007"]

[QUOTE="CwlHeddwyn"] I was told that it would be outdated soon! the 6870 will last a bit longer.CwlHeddwyn

outdated? no....Battlefield 3 doesn't come out for about 8 months, and even then BF3 will be the only game that makes the 5770 struggle a bit. Honestly it probably won't be "outdated" until the next gen of consoles starts coming out

so basically I spend £117 on a card that will start to struggle in 8months? guess I'll have to get the 6870 which will give me what? an extra 12 months before a new game starts to cause that to struggle? I don't mind spending money on gaming just it's a bit annoying having your machine going out of date so quickly. how do you guys do it? does overclocking help keep an old machine going or something? or is it a case of updating 1 component every 18months or so?

The 5770 will not struggle it runs bc2 just fine at a mix of medium/high settings at 1920x1080 at 60+fps bf3 is supposed to run on a more optimized engine designed for pc so it should run even better on midrange pc but at the same time will push the graphics on people with more powerful graphics card. And how long do you think consoles will last if someone where to buy one right now? They have got 2-3 years of life in them before the next gen consoles comeout and devloper focus will shift to that and to enjoy the latest games oyu have to buy a whole new console a decent pc from now will still be able to run games even when the next-gen consoles come out and a properly built pc all that would be needed would be to update the graphics card a year afterwards and you will beat consoles in performance in games for the entire lifespan of that console. and with the very real possibility of console makers not using as powerful and costly hardware nextgen current highend cards may very well be able to do that.
