Ok - I'm the topic poster.
I'll admit the differences are very minor and both controllers are excellent.
And a big factor is the size of your hands. My hands aren't too big so maybe that is why I like the PS3 controller better (it strains my hands using the 360 controller and this may be due to my having difficulty stretching for the buttons).
I'll also admit that the R2 and L2 buttons on the PS3 suck horribly (they curve DOWN - what the hell!?!?).
And I'll admit the 360 controller is super ergnomically comfortable and kick's the PS3's ass in terms of how comfy it fits in your hand (but it causes more strain the long run in the long run).
Pretty mature responses so far to my topic - good to see.
I feel like the PS3's sticks are too long or are rotating around one point instead of moving around and rotating at the same time, which the Xbox controller does (at least it feels that way). The PS3's controler is too small and not appropriate to play FPS games on. The D-Pad is okay, but its hard to pres down and back at the same time, you can't "slide" it as easily as with the D-pad of the 360 controller, plus I use the sticks for fighting games, so it doesnt really matter to me.
I played a lot of PS2 games back in the days and I started to feel a deep pain in my hands (especially when playing DMC 3). I guess every controler has this problem.
Last thing I wanna say is that before you choose a controler as your personal favourite, make sure you try out all available controlers first, before claiming that one is better than the other, therefore calling it a favourite. I tried them all and the 360 is by far the best.
It's a matter of opinion really. For me as a avid FPS fan the Playstation controller is absolutely horrid for console FPS. Most will generally claim the Playstation controller is superior over the 360s' controller because of the D Pad. This generally only applies to fighting games. However, myself, I have not noticed a difference in the D Pad. For fighting games a arcade stick is the way to go for me. The only Controller that I ever really felt comfortable using for a fighting game was the Sega Saturn controller.
Agreed...ps3 is my primary console but I have a 360 pad for my pc...but I can't stand it. I go back to my old saitek rumble pad unfortunatly becuase I can't get the ds3 installed on my pc... I installed those unoficial ds3 drivers and it recognizes, but not in games...arrrgh... So my saitek has 6 buttons on the front like a sega saturn pad, but is shaped like a larger ds3, ds3 style analog location, 8 way d-pad that is super responsive, it only has l1 and r1 on the back but they are massive at least 2 -2.5 finger width and 3 different rumble engines, the suckers got weight.... but it doesn't work in a lot of newer games...mainly use it for the old gtas 3-vc-sa, and freespace 2.I used to rant and rave about how much the better the 360 controller was than the PS3 controller and was shocked whenever anyone tried to say that the PS3 controller was better.
Well I haven't had my Xbox 360 for a year and have just been using a PS3 (always annoyed that I had the inferior controller) and then I just got a 360 again and was all excited about the controller but just realized, the PS3 controller is better because:
1) The d-pad is better on the PS3 controller obviously
2) The triggers on the 360 controller are actually not that great - they take a lot more effort (in terms of reaching to them and pressing them all the way down) compared to the PS3 controller's L1 and R1 buttons (which are usually used in place of the 360 triggers in most FPS games) which you can just very quickly and easily hit, which is particularly good in FPS games for faster shooting
3) Having the left analog stick at the bottom and the d-pad at the top on the PS3 controller is actually the better set-up! Its easier to navigage the stick with your left thumb when its slightly below your thumb because you get a more relaxed grip by bringing your thumb down onto it (as opposed to the 360 controller where you bring your thumb up)
4) The sides of the 360 controller where your palms go around is really confortable...for an hour or so and then it gives you hand cramps!
5) The dead-space on the PS3 controller is much less than the 360 controller which is much better for everyone except for complete noobs. The 360 controller dead-space is so high that its like you are playing all games with the controller settings to beginner level!
Anyone agree? Disagree?

Me thinks you they are a few PS3 Fanboys here. Of course you prefer PS3 controllers cause you are used to them. 360 has erganomics in mind as well as looking damn good! It was all thought out. The PS3 controller was the best years ago, not now
The Playstation controller is one of the most horrible designs ever. 15 years of avoiding that piece of junk.deathtoallgodsWow you wasted 15 years of not playing some great games because of the sytem's controller?smh And the controller is fine. I guess you thought the original xbox controller "The Duke" was great?lol
The Playstation controller is one of the most horrible designs ever. 15 years of avoiding that piece of junk.deathtoallgodsi think its underrated, i have a ps3 but everytime i play my friends 360, i think the 360 fits better in my hand, and the thumb sticks feel a little better, i think the 360's controller is great for fps, while the ps3s is good for games like street fighter, skate amongst other things.

Luckily I don't like fighters right? The Playstation controller was designed for Carnies and Japanese people. It is not for me(and most others judging from this thread).
I used to be a 360 controller fan, but after using my new PS3 alot more the last couple months, I almost cant go back to the 360. THe ps3 controller is a bit weird at first but after a while its soooo much better. Only thing is that the analog sticks should be indented like the 360's so your fingers cannot slip off them. With the ps3 controller long periods of time where you hold the stick down it tends to want to slip off. But its a minor thing lol.

True. but the analogue is good alternative. but yeah for fighters the d pad is the best.
I diasagree. the triggers are awesome for racers. because you can control throttle and brake much more efficiently this way.
the triggers are sensitive to a whole gradient of pressure instead of being on/off.

completely disagree/ the analogue stick set up is perfect for me. personal preference ftw.
4) The sides of the 360 controller where your palms go around is really confortable...for an hour or so and then it gives you hand cramps!
never had this. your hands must be small.
5) The dead-space on the PS3 controller is much less than the 360 controller which is much better for everyone except for complete noobs. The 360 controller dead-space is so high that its like you are playing all games with the controller settings to beginner level!

Wow you wasted 15 years of not playing some great games because of the sytem's controller?smh And the controller is fine. I guess you thought the original xbox controller "The Duke" was great?lol Yeah seriously. I thought I was picky about controllers, but avoiding Playstation sytems for 15 years because of the controller? Even if you don't like it, at most, it is only slightly worse than the alternatives (i.e. there is not that huge a difference between the controllers that are out there).[QUOTE="deathtoallgods"]The Playstation controller is one of the most horrible designs ever. 15 years of avoiding that piece of junk.coltsfan4ever
I agree.
1) its really light which is nice
2)bluetooth means you can never really be out of range (in home lol, of course at some point youll be out of range)
3) usb recharging is easy and you can still play whilst charging
4) D-pad is better
5)analouge is much more accurate for FPS
6) with the real trigger add ons (£3) the L2 and R2 buttons are really good
I am the topic poster and just though I should mention that a solution for the worst part of the PS3 controller (the R2/L2 buttons) are the pro-triggers add-ons that you can buy.
You can buy them on Amazon.com.
I got these and find them to be the greatest things ever! They totally and completely fix this part of the PS3 controller (although the 360 STILL has better triggers).
And before someone points it out, I'll admit that it's stupid that you have to go out and buy an attachment to make the R2/L2 buttons even compare to the 360's triggers.

Great post and I think you nailed it on the head for sure. The left stick for me being under the dpad is awesome, cause when needing the dpad it isn't nothing but sliding off of the left stick to your dpad for a function. On the 360 you have to reach back for them, and in Socom and its controls you definitly find out real quick about why the dpad is in its position and how comfortable it is to be running with the left stick (pushing up) and then just slide off of it to up arrow to zoom in for Socom. And your points of the reaching for the triggers on the 360 is right on. Which it was the top I guess (L1& R1) buttons on the 360 controller I had a hard time reaching up over the lip to reach which I could see being really annoying while trying to throw a grenade. All and all a great post and actual good reasons that I agree with for why the ps3 controller I think is better.
P.S. Also I think the ps3 controller is more like a mouse with free movement while the 360 controller has more of a axis left and right and up and down feel. Not enough freedom to hit your corners good.
The Playstation controller is one of the most horrible designs ever. 15 years of avoiding that piece of junk.deathtoallgodsso 15 years of sub-par gaming???
The PlayStation controller is still good and still does the job, but there are things about it that are definitely antiquated. I'm puzzled as to why Sony fanboys are so resistant to change.
still like 360 controller much more then ps3 controller. i got rid of sixaxis coz it was too light and had no rumble. bought DS3 which is much better then sixaxis but not even close to the awesomeness of360 controller. i agree DS3 has bit better D-Pad but sometimes when i press Down on D-Pad it registers as Left especially in Resistance 2 where i press Down to activate berserk and it comes up with Map which is assigned to left
This pretty much sums it up.

Hopefully, Sony will design theDS4 with this in mind as well asswaping the D-pad andleft stick replacemant and making the controller more comfortable.I am the topic poster and just though I should mention that a solution for the worst part of the PS3 controller (the R2/L2 buttons) are the pro-triggers add-ons that you can buy.

This article really flushed out my original point about the dead zone. The 360 controller is basically for noobs when it comes to shooters. If you are good at shooters, the 360 basically sucks away your skill and puts you on part with noobs. With the PS3 controller, you can swing around, shoot a couple people, swing around and shoot a guy right beside you and then a guy way off in the distance etc. etc. while the same scenario on the 360 would simply not play out - you would be shot dead halfway through this by some noob who by luck happens to get you in his sights. This pretty much sums it up.

Hopefully, Sony will design theDS4 with this in mind as well asswaping the D-pad andleft stick replacemant and making the controller more comfortable. I'd want that! Since I havn't really spent too much time on a 360 i have to say that I'm limited to my PS3 controller experience. It is tough to use the controller for shooters if you are using more than two of the L and R buttons. For example in Killzone 2, When I use L2 to crouch and L1 to aim and R1 to shoot and then try to use the cover system my fingers get crowded. It takes my aim off! My girlfriend says I do have man hands.[QUOTE="Jason_A"]

I used to hate PS3s controller as well but after playing my PS3 much more recently it's not so bad. I don't know if I like it better than 360s, but you do have a point about the r1 vs xbox trigger setup. In CoD4 at least, you're able to shoot much faster than 360. But one major complaint I have about it is that the analog sticks lack the sensitivity of the 360s.
overall i prefer the PS3s contoller, but i was used to that design cuz of my PS1/PS2 days. the dpad is obviously better on the ps3, the triggers however get annoying at times, they're a little slippery. as for the weight, that means less than nothing to me.
5) The dead-space on the PS3 controller is much less than the 360 controller which is much better for everyone except for complete noobs. The 360 controller dead-space is so high that its like you are playing all games with the controller settings to beginner level!

OMG OMG - that is so funny!!!!!!I used to rant and rave about how much the better the 360 controller was than the PS3 controller and was shocked whenever anyone tried to say that the PS3 controller was better.
(Obvious is obvious this has been known for a long time and really has no bearing upon any thing but fighting games since most games i play on 360 don't use the dpad for the most part but the ps3 dpad is superior)
(um yeah the L2 and R2 on the ps3 controller are the equivilent of the triggers on the 360 controller, and you have no idea what your talking about since the space from your knuckle joint of your index fingers is the EXACT same on both controllers when it comes to the bumpers and triggers. as for that quickly and easily shooting an enemy is not dependent upon the triggers since the DS3 L2 and R2 triggers have as much force to be pushed as the 360 ones.)3) Having the left analog stick at the bottom and the d-pad at the top on the PS3 controller is actually the better set-up! Its easier to navigage the stick with your left thumb when its slightly below your thumb because you get a more relaxed grip by bringing your thumb down onto it (as opposed to the 360 controller where you bring your thumb up)
(more malarky since you seem to think its easier to bring your thumbs up to work the face buttons but not so when it comes to the analog stick and then theres the fact that your not just casually bringing your thumb down your bringing it down and in away from the joint which is very unergonomic)4) The sides of the 360 controller where your palms go around is really confortable...for an hour or so and then it gives you hand cramps!
(its comfortable? that means you can HOLD it for hours, and you dont know what your talking about since the 360 controller conforms to your hand unlike the DS3 which FORCES your hand to conform to it, and every ERGONOMIC thing on the planet is made in such a way so that it conforms to your body not the other way around)5) The dead-space on the PS3 controller is much less than the 360 controller which is much better for everyone except for complete noobs. The 360 controller dead-space is so high that its like you are playing all games with the controller settings to beginner level!
(and like most people you dont even understand what a deadzone is, but surfice to say on the ps3 controller its like playing most games with super speed making your turning and aiming jerky fast, where as on the 360 controller it is like a beginner you can pick it up and play you dont have to get used to it nearly as much and you can chance your sensitivity and master it.)
Anyone agree? Disagree?

I played my friend's 360 and PS3 quite a bit and honestly speaking, the 360 controller is way better. From the triggers, to the analog sticks to the buttons, the 360 is a lot better. One thing the PS3 controller has over the 360 is the dpad, 360 dpad sucks. I'll take the Wii remotes over the two any day though :P
