I have a Wii right now, but when I get an HDTV this summer, I really wanted to get one of the more powerful HD consoles to compliment my Wii. I was all set on getting a 360 until I heard the latest 1up podcast. Wow, the reason Microsoft is willing to lose so much money with their gaming division is now apparent. Microsoft is trying to bully their way in, and once they establish themselves, they want to take stuff that is free to gamers and make it so we have no choice but pay to get it, whether gamers or even the developers themselves like it. This is coming from the Gears of War developers! One thing they said that was particularly scary is that how Microsoft should focus on giving a service that all consumers would be happy with, rather then trying to nickle and dime their customers even if it means a smaller consumer base. That attitude is just scary. They're trying to do to Gaming what Windows did to Operating Systems. I am sorry, this is not an attack on 360 fans or even the 360 itself, I think it is a great gaming console. Microsoft just sucks, and it reminds me why I hate Corporate America. Hearing that rant even made me regret getting my windows PC that I purchased recently, instead of an Apple like I was thinking. The only way consumers benefit in today's Capitalistic world is if there is healthy competition, and this made me realize the dangers of Microsoft ever getting a vice-grip on the console gaming industry.

Well the biggest game that I want one of the HD consoles for is GTA4 but since it's multi-plat it doesn't really matter. But this is not a game thing. This is a principle thing. I am honestly concerned about what Microsoft's impact on the gaming industry could be if they every gained the type of dominance that the PS2 enjoyed last gen. It's scary to think that gaming could turn into something like the Computer world where Microsoft's bloated OS gets shoved down people's throats with not much choice. I don't want this to happen to gaming. I mean the 360 is a great machine and is probably the best overall next-gen gaming console right now, but I can't support a company who I think has intentions that are against so many of the things I like about the Gaming industry. As of right now, PC gaming is the one that is more danger of being dramatically changed for the worse, but if that succeeded there is no doubt in my mind that Microsoft would carry that over to the Consoles.

i have a 360 and i am super hating MS right now. all this news about games for windows taking everything pc gamers had for free to monopolize the industry and not even allow free content on live proves to me that the direction MS is trying to move the industry is not the direction that is best for gamers. the whole thing leaves me with the feeling that i am paying $50 a year to access stuff that is free everywhere else and access to a marketplace to buy more stuff.

It's really a matter of when, not if. This is Microsoft we're talking about. If they really want the dominant market share in the gaming industry, they're going to get it. They certainly have the money to spend in order to get to that spot. Look at the strides they've made just from the original Xbox to the Xbox360.

Please don't say that! That's the worst thing you can say. These companies can't do sh*t unless we support them. Microsoft needs to be sent a message big-time. Just like Intel who was over-charging and under-developing CPUs until consumers, particularly gamers embraced AMD, and now Intel is getting into high-gear with giving more competitive pricing and better CPUs.

Unless Microsoft changes their approach to what they're trying to do in gaming, I am not getting a 360, nor is the next PC I get going to have Windows. I know all these companies have to make money, but screwing the consumers is not the way to do it. That is why Ford, GM, and Chrysler are getting their @ss handed to them by Toyota and Honda. They thought they could give us low-quality badge-engineered cars until someone gave the consumers what they really wanted at a good price. Hopefully this happens to Microsoft. Heck, with the way I feel about microsoft right now, I'm wishing Atari and Sega made a revival, and Microsoft just left. Heck, Sony and their Blu-Ray pushing arses can leave too. Just leave Nintendo, Sega, and Atari. Video Games companies that care about video games, and that's it!

You totally missed my point. I don't think Microsoft is guaranteed of anything, I just don't like what I think they will do if they ever do become the dominant company which is why I decided to not support them.

Well, that's a real crappy attitude to have. No, sorry, I will not get used to it. I use openoffice.org which is completely free and is just as good as Microsoft Office. I use GIMP because it also completely free and is just as good as Photoshop. I do indie game developing with Reality Factory because it's free and is just as good as Torque or DarkBasic. Computers and Videogames have always been an industry of passion where people were willing to give stuff for free for fans that couldn't quite afford to buy it all, but Microsoft wants to change that, and I'm 100% against Microsoft.

Why? They're not the ones trying to turn gaming into a nickle-and-dime industry where the consumer gets screwed? At least Nintendo isn't. Sony does have other agendas such as pushing Blu-Ray, but that isn't going to endanger what I love about gaming, the way Microsoft is trying to do.

So you're essentially not buying a 360 because it's made by MS?

Sheesh, i thought we were past these childish reasons. People used this with the original Xbox and it sounded just as dumb.

Lets completely ignore the fact that MS brought online console gaming to the mainstream essentially. Give credit where it's due, MS has done alot for the industry. Competition is always good.

I was writing a long drawn out response to this, but I decided to keep it short and simple, first of all that statement still holds true. Now secondly, Listen to the interview in the 1up podcast, and you tell me . . . Do you approve of what Microsoft is trying to do?

HAhahahahaha you voice your opinions to Microsoft with your voice hahahaha I'm sure Bill Gates would say well PuckHog04 doesn't like this so we should reconsider. Look, if Microsoft made a crap-load of money with Window's live you really think they're going to care about a bunch of people whining about it? No, but if nobody buys into into it, and they lose money, do you think they're going to make some changes? Of course. Also, where the hell do you get me saying that Sony and Nintendo are angels. I have some criticisms of them as well, but none of those criticisms are nearly as detrimental to the gaming industry (from a consumer point of view) as what Microsoft is doing.

I'm not going to argue opinions, it's a waste of my time.

I will say that MS was essentially the company that brought online console gaming to the mainstream so that we have them to thank for. As for a $5 or so charge for a few maps every few months for Gears of War? Heh, I don't care. I'll buy them simply because they're cheap.

Wait wait, you're laughing at me saying "I voice my opinion"? Wait, back up for a second, do you even know a thing about me? How in the hell would you even know if i'm capable or not of having an impact on them or any other company for that matter? You don't. Thanks.

I'm not telling anybody to sell their 360, but you even admitted that what they are doing is wrong, and is it wrong of me to reconsider my future console choice because of this. The Gears of War thing is not even the big deal. The big deal is all the stuff with Windows Live. Do you know how big of an impact that would have on PC gaming if it were to happen. They would monopolize PC gaming, and then it would be so easy for them to transfer that over to the Console gaming world.

Do you know how big of an impact that would have on PC gaming if it were to happen. They would monopolize PC gaming, and then it would be so easy for them to transfer that over to the Console gaming world.Zerostatic0
Don't even think about it. As it stands right now Games For Windows is gonna pretty much fail because of stupid decisions by Microsoft. And no, they won't monopolize gaming.

How in the hell would you even know if i'm capable or not of having an impact on them or any other company for that matter? You don't. Thanks.Puckhog04
Sorry if that sounded like a personal attack, it wasn't. My point is that I know how most companies operate, particularly big ones like Microsoft and they listen to cash-flow and consumer-spending, not to what the consumer really wants. So unless you are a person whose voice has the ability to change stock prices (i.e. Head Honcho at EA or Blizzard or something ling that) what you say really has no impact. It's like those online petitions, they almost never get their desired result and that is with thousands of signatures.

I hope you're right, but I'm worried that Microsoft is going to get alittle lenient and give companies a couple of the things they want and over time, they'll make little changes here and there and get back to their original model, and eventually I think it'll get worse. I can see them wanting to charge any gamer who wants to play an online PC game to have to subscribe to their service, and every mod, map, and expansion will cost money and of course they'll get their nice chunk of the pie at every stage.

thats exactly what MS is trying to do. its great that they created a great online service, but that doesnt justify games for windows or charging for content that they didnt even make that was intended to be free. i think everyone can agree that MS (or any company) monopolizing the game industry is possibly the worst thing that could ever happen for videogames.

The only way consumers benefit in today's Capitalistic world is if there is healthy competition, and this made me realize the dangers of Microsoft ever getting a vice-grip on the console gaming industry.Zerostatic0

you have a point but in all fairness compared to the blantant BS and LIES that Sony has been dishing out the last 12 months, M$ is the lesser of two evils. Sony is horrible... remember what they did to LikSang??

Every company tries to make as much money as they think they can get away with. That's why the Wii costs $250 despite the actual hardware costing much less than that. It's also why Sony is willing to take such a loss on their hardware to ensure a blue ray victory. The methods are different but the end goal is the same.

Yeah, bust Nintendo charging an extra 50 bucks on their console or Sony ensuring Blu-Ray wins is not going to have a lasting impact on gaming that will be felt decades from now. What Microsoft is trying to do goes beyond the petty crap that's been done before, it is something that will change the face of the industry. I just do not want to see the day where I'm buying a bare-bones games, and I get nickle and dimed for stuff that used to come in the games for free. Furthermore what Microsoft is trying to do is create an environment where everyone HAS to go by that model, other companies will not have a choice to give stuff away for free or to create feature-filled games. If Microsoft succeeds, companies will HAVE to do it their way. That sucks!

If I were the TC, I'd be a lot more irritated at the release of the $480 Elite as opposed to the withholding of $4 maps.

I know but it's important to remember that Gears of War was AAA and GOTY here even before any map packs were released. Downloadable content is new to consoles and MS is testing the market. If they find out people aren't willing to pay extra then they will have to change their business model. I haven't bought anything on live and don't plan to.

new consoles will come and go, but if MS monopolizes the game industry then videogames will suck forever.

The same would be true if any company had a monopoly in the industry. I can remember what Nintendo did with royalties when they almost had one. It's one of the main reasons 3rd parties abandoned them when Sony came along.

I would care less if Microsoft released a $10,000 gold-plated Xbox 360. That's peanuts compared to this. Microsoft is trying to install a business model that will change what I love about the gaming industry forever. They're trying to strong-arm other companies to with-hold stuff from us. I mean, just use a little imagination. It's pretty scary to imagine where Microsoft wants to take gaming. They want to make money off of every phase of the game. They want the licensing fees from the game developers, they want the fees to let us play online, and they want to charge us for content that used to be free, and they want to create an environment where that is the only way to do business.

there was an article in gameinformer that stated that MS denying free content in attempt to get gamers used to having to pay for every little thing. this info was sourced from multiple game developers/publishers. its not very likely that MS is going to roll over and change their business model after one foul up.
