[QUOTE="Flame1"][QUOTE="2largeadults"][QUOTE="GoldenEye005"][QUOTE="Idonomeus"]Every company tries to make as much money as they think they can get away with. That's why the Wii costs $250 despite the actual hardware costing much less than that. It's also why Sony is willing to take such a loss on their hardware to ensure a blue ray victory. The methods are different but the end goal is the same.Idonomeus
TRUE but its the milking that gets the TC upset which makes a good point.
If I were the TC, I'd be a lot more irritated at the release of the $480 Elite as opposed to the withholding of $4 maps. new consoles will come and go, but if MS monopolizes the game industry then videogames will suck forever. The same would be true if any company had a monopoly in the industry. I can remember what Nintendo did with royalties when they almost had one. It's one of the main reasons 3rd parties abandoned them when Sony came along. true, which is why there should always be competition. i just said MS because they seem to be more aggressive about it now that they have had some success, and with the whole games for windows strategy.[QUOTE="daveg1"]so you think they will be the dominant company but yet your not going to get a 360?????????????Zerostatic0
its the way of the world to pay for things that is somethig you have to get used to!daveg1Well, that's a real crappy attitude to have. No, sorry, I will not get used to it. I use openoffice.org which is completely free and is just as good as Microsoft Office. I use GIMP because it also completely free and is just as good as Photoshop. I do indie game developing with Reality Factory because it's free and is just as good as Torque or DarkBasic. Computers and Videogames have always been an industry of passion where people were willing to give stuff for free for fans that couldn't quite afford to buy it all, but Microsoft wants to change that, and I'm 100% against Microsoft.
What I don't understand is you distance yourself from Microsoft who is trying to capitalize on optional content but then you go and purchase a PS3 which it's main intention is to establish Blue-ray format as market standard rather than focus on gaming? This truly doesn't make sense to me, if you really don't like where gaming is going then just stick with the wii because Sony is just as bad as Microsoft if not worse.
Regarding your second point that you mainly support free software, although there should exist alternatives for those who can not afford it, I believe it isn't right to only support the open source community either. Why? Because not every developer wants to develop software as result of their passion, and when people get used to the idea of free software they will never purchase software no matter what and this will hurt the industry because there will be no motivation for new developers to educate in the field of computers when there is simply no money in it. One thing that really bothers me about the open source community is the mentality that all software must be offered for free and then companies should charge for customer support, this just doesn't work. If the average user doesn't want to pay for the software, the chances are they won't pay for customer support either and why would bigger companies pay for customer support? What is the purpose of their IT department or the professionals they hire? Only supporting free software doesn't make the industry better nor making it only proprietary. Competition is good and is the factor that keeps the industry alive.

I have a Wii right now, but when I get an HDTV this summer, I really wanted to get one of the more powerful HD consoles to compliment my Wii. I was all set on getting a 360 until I heard the latest 1up podcast. Wow, the reason Microsoft is willing to lose so much money with their gaming division is now apparent. Microsoft is trying to bully their way in, and once they establish themselves, they want to take stuff that is free to gamers and make it so we have no choice but pay to get it, whether gamers or even the developers themselves like it. This is coming from the Gears of War developers! One thing they said that was particularly scary is that how Microsoft should focus on giving a service that all consumers would be happy with, rather then trying to nickle and dime their customers even if it means a smaller consumer base. That attitude is just scary. They're trying to do to Gaming what Windows did to Operating Systems. I am sorry, this is not an attack on 360 fans or even the 360 itself, I think it is a great gaming console. Microsoft just sucks, and it reminds me why I hate Corporate America. Hearing that rant even made me regret getting my windows PC that I purchased recently, instead of an Apple like I was thinking. The only way consumers benefit in today's Capitalistic world is if there is healthy competition, and this made me realize the dangers of Microsoft ever getting a vice-grip on the console gaming industry.Zerostatic0Well I would say Sony is probably just as greedy and ruthless as MS.... Truth is they all are, thats what got them where they are. I dont particulary care for MS, but I do own a 360, but I use Linux on almost everything except pc gaming.
in your opinion how is "sony just as bad if not worse"? and im tired of the old blu ray is for movies crap, they were talking about as a storage format before they announced it could be used for movies.Flame1
If you believe that only Microsoft is in it for the money and they are the only ones who try to capitalize on various aspects of gaming then you are oblivious. Sony isn't in it for the kicks and laughs either and if they become the market leader once more they will adopt the same tactics because when you own the market what you say goes and at the end of the day the more money that goes in the pocket of the shareholders matters not what fans want.

well yeah all big companies are in it for the dollar, but specifically what did sony do that was any worse than MS aggressively trying to completely monopolize the game industry like they are right now? they might have done some greedy stuff but they never took away features that pc gamers have been getting for free and put a bunch of price tags on it.*puts on lemming mask* HOW COULD YOU! 360 is the bestestestesteedededededee ever in the world! no hardware problems i swear! buy now! or i stick the master chief on you!
*puts on cow mask* Yeah good job u didn't get that xflop cuz it has no good games or as good graphics as the ps3 because the sony reps told us thats true so you know its true.
*Puts on sheep mask* OMG what about the wii??!?!?!!? no love for the wii! *cry* our system has good graphics too......better then n64!
my point? who cares. useless thread.

The console market and the PC market are separate fields, Microsoft isn't trying to capitalize from the PC market due to the success of their console division and nor will they stop if their console division fails. But how is Sony just as bad as Microsoft? Because they make it impossible for smaller companies to even consider developing for their platform. I myself work for a small game development company and I can tell you with the budget required for PS3 I will never develop for the Playstation platform. Microsoft won't allow developers to release free content but Sony won't allow developers to even make content.

Aside from horrendous development costs, Sony makes it especially hard for smaller companies to qualify as a developer for their console and that is the main reason why a lot of companies are shying away from the PS3.

Microsoft is NOT going to forget that they lost the 4 billion on the Xbox. They are NOT going to compete fairly in the console market -- because having competition cuts at the bottom line because Microsoft will have to spend money on Research, Development, and Innovation. Expect Microsoft to continue to pour money to secure and steal exclusives. Expect Microsoft to strangle-hold the market by keeping exclusives with their massive subsidies from their OS monopoly. Expect Sony to start losing. Then you should expect more shoddy hardware, poorer support, pay more for what they are offering for free, and finally, don't expect any more innovation.

arent all the consoles expensive to develope for? well you would know more about that than me, i hea its a very difficult business to be successful in so good luck. but its not going to be any better if MS monopolizes the games industry like they do with computer software, which they are actively trying to do and here is the proof: they charge $50 a year for online gaming with a bunch of features (albeit very nice features) and access to a marketplace to spend more money when this has always been free elsewhere. even after the fee they still charge you for every little thing (epics maps) they even deny putting other developers content on the marketplace unless it has a price tag ( again AFTER they already charge for the access to said content). soon they will be releasing games for windows which will start taking away all features that have been free for pc gamers, even the epic guys think this a bad idea on that blog. there are also reports that the rules of getting your content on live vary depending on how much clout your company has with MS. as a game consumer this worries me a lot because under their vision i see a world where after and i pay monthly fees im still paying a ton of little michrotransactions for continued support that used to be free (they charge you to change your gamercard already!). its not that i mind paying for an expansions or maps, just that microsoft would deny any free stuff . i would think this would make things even more difficult for small developers but you would know better about that than me.[QUOTE="saspool"][QUOTE="Flame1"][QUOTE="saspool"][QUOTE="Flame1"][QUOTE="saspool"][QUOTE="Flame1"]in your opinion how is "sony just as bad if not worse"? and im tired of the old blu ray is for movies crap, they were talking about as a storage format before they announced it could be used for movies.Flame1

I agree and that's why I'm not saying Sony should go out of business but they should not be allowed to be market leader either. Competition will be the factor that will keep the market balanced.
Ps3 needs no games silly! they have teh cell teh blue-ray teh CELL why would a gaming console need games pfft. :PIce-PantherI just gotta say I can't freaking beleive people are still saying this.. It really is starting to piss me off.
Yeah, I would say thats good a choice, Out of the box Ps3 is better then what 360 offers out of the box. I dont mean to sound like a fanboy, but its true. Led_poisonI know its nitpicky and all but out of the box the PS3 is not even capable of doing Hi-Def, nor does it include a headset. I'm still buying one at some point but I thought anyone saying the PS3 offers more "out of the box" was pretty weak. As far as the TCs comments go, what do you expect the main goal from all the companies is to get your money and both Sony and Nintendo are as equally guilty of being underhanded to accomplish the goal.  Sony uses misdirection and hype to sell systems and Nintendo sells 2,3 or 4 versions of the same thing to pad their bottom line, they sell you the same game with minor variations to sell pokemon games and release different versions of the hardware constantly. I'm not saying the others do not do this, I'm just saying everyone is just as guilty as their competitors. If anyone wants to really make a statement you have to refuse to buy any game system and take up knitting.
get the ps3, you'll be spending over 1,000 dollars on the 360 in just 2 years from all the broken 360's and worn out warranties you're going to getddldave
Generalization for the loss. I haven't even spent $1000 on my 360 yet, and i have 6 games purchased new, a wireless adapter, a warranty, and a year or so of live.

exactly, people are idiotic to buy a gaming console and expect it to play games :P

I have said time and time again the worst thing that could happen to the videogame industry is for Microsoft to be the top dog. The only comfort I feel is that the XBOX 360 will never achieve this since it is an utter flop outside of North America. I simply need you to all remember when EA bought the NFL License and how much that has stunk and that is small time compared to what Microsoft wants to do.

I was thinking more sarcasm. I am always amused at posts ike this that are based on conspiracy theories and the complete denial that all of these companies want your money - every last one of them and as much as they can take. People read way too much into a system that is there to entertain you. Please Log In to post.
