Actually, this brings up a very interesting question about games. Does the main character, black, white, male, female, gay straight, etc... effect the gamer/communities perception of the game?
I would say that most people like games that have a relatable main character. I'm not sure how much of a factor race plays into our impressions of the character/game, but I'm willing to bet that gender and sexuality would have a bigger impact. A lot of people call Uncharted Duderaider, but would people be as enthusiastic about the game if the main character had been thewoman in the plane? (Sorry, just played the demo.) FF games talk a lot of flack for the "emo/girly" men, but what if the main character was actually homosexual? (Remember, sexuality is not as taboo a subject in a lot of Japanese media)
I remember playing gameshow type games even on the PS, you always tried to find the contestant that looked the most like yourself. Now in the days of Miis and other avatars, we're growing used to having the ability to more easily place ourselves in the game.
