The point of the argument is that hermits are constantly boasting about the graphics of Crysis. If you can build me a PC that will run that game well for $500 or less, I will buy one for myself and for you. How's that sound?

Not all console players are narrow minded. The reason I play a console is because to be COMPETITIVE on PC you have to end up upgrading over and over to get the correct draw distances etc... Lag is much much LESS prevalent on the consoles from my experiences because everybody is playing on a system with equal specs. You hermits can be just as narrow minded as any console fanboy can. It really bugs me that almost every PC gamer on this forum acts with such a condescending tone it really drags the image of the whole community down.

It's weird, but how can you see tone from text?

Eg: Pc is better than console for the graphic. What kind of tone do you think I am using?

Do you not understand what tone means? Do you not know anything about the writing process? You can project all sorts of different tones or moods through words alone. Haven't you ever read a light-hearted or dark book? It can be done. Lots of great authors do it very well. His point was that hermits are very good at creating a condescending/elitist tone in their posts.

That's pretty much my problem with the hermits in SW also. I love PC gaming and for the most part hermits are cool. Just not the ones that frequent SW.

As I've said before, bragging about a PC superiority in SW is like bragging to some kid that your car is better than his bike.

We get it.

You mean like how 360/PS3 fanboys do it to a Wii fanboy? Those hypocrits deserve every second of it.

PC is simply the better machine if you have one. But you are also going to need consoles for the other games. PC gamers talk down because they know their own rigg that they built or customized is better than the all 3 of the next-gen consoles being advertised everywhere. It feels good, and when you get to play the best shooters on the market with keyboard and mouse, and PC exclusives like WoW, Counter-Strike, Starcraft 2, The Witcher, and Crysis, slap a PS2 up there and you are one set gamer.

It's generally youngsters that complain about price. I remember thinking the same thing when I was younger, because money is in short supply.

Also there is no 'better' platform. Each has its strengths and weaknesses and if you call yourself a gamer, you'd have every platform. Each platform is unique. Yes I upgraded for Crysis. Was it worth it for that game? Probably not but I had fun doing it and I am satisfied. At least my PC can run everything now - that includes a library of thousands of games and has the functionality that puts any other device to shame.

You know I would, but consoles can't even run Crysis, so there goes that argument. This is why we boast about the graphics of Crysis.

Now CoD4 on the other hand, a 500 dollar computer could run that game with no problem.

Firstly, I said $500 or less.

Second, I wanted a PC that will run Crysis well.

Third, if I can build a PC for $500 that will run console games just as well, why would I even bother? I'd rather spend the money on the console. It's already built. Everything is in the box. It's about convenience.

PC gamers really need to give the elitism a rest. We're all still dorks at the end of the day.

As a PC gamer I think the $500 to run COD4 well argument or others etc... is kind of iffy. Honestly, prepare to drop a grand if you want to play the recent games nicely (not crysis though, i have a 8800GT and it chugs during firefights on high).

But $1000 is a great deal for a nice gaming computer because computers provide you with everything. I could honestly live in a one room shack with a futon, refridgerator, and a computer for my entire life. These is so much value behind a computer, it's expensive price tag is very reasonable.

If you know what you're doing and are a pro at it, you could build your own nice computer for much cheaper, but the $500 Crysis machine does not exist.

everyone has a computer anyways, why not drop the extra money to play games on it?

Tired arguements that have been done far too many times. Look, PC gaming is more expensive up front. There is no denying thatm and you're just trying to weasle out of the arguement. You can just as easily save the ammount of money through the lower costing v ideo games over the extended period of a generation. You do not need to upgrade, you do so of your own volition. Not to mention you can just as easily call up bestbuy and have them put together a computer and it will be already built by the time you reach the story. So really, your convenience arguement is whack as well.

Not true. $400 over here on my latest PC and I'm playing Bioshock with everything set on high with very few instances of slowdown. Tried the CoD4 demo not too long ago and was able to almost achieve the same results with loading being the biggest issue.

Point taken, but can I play MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, etc... on a PC? What about that argument? I think I speak for many console gamers when I say that I don't just care about pretty graphics and high resolutions. I care about stories and characters. Over the years, we've all developed attachments to various game franchises, some of which can only be found on one platform. Most PC games don't really appeal to me.

It boils down to this... I sit in front of a computer all day long for work/school. When I get home, I'd rather relax on my couch and play Call of Duty 4 on my television. I realize that you can connect a PC to a television and use a gamepad, but I don't really want to be bothered with that mess. Is that okay? Am I allowed that right?

Except you can't have it both ways. Yes, a PC can be built for $500 using the loss leaders at Fry's, or you can spend a lot more on decent hardware. Yes, PC games can have rock-solid 60 FPS, or graphics like Crysis. But unless you're shoveling loads of money into your machine, you're not getting Crysis at 1920x1200@60 FPS. It's dishonest to brag about graphics that can't be done on console-level hardware, only to later try to counter the cost argument with a machine that would run it like garbage.

And there are even more exclusive titles on the PC. Then again, you can pull the preference arguement, but thats just opinion, and has already been acknowledged by PC gamers as the only workable arguement against PC gaming. So you don't like it, super. No, thats not okay, wanna know why? Because it takes about the same ammount of effort to get the PC to hook up to a TV as it would to hook a console up to a TV. Theres only one more/less lire than a console depending on your setup. It doesn't take exhorbant ammounts of effort. Thats like me saying, LAWL IM TOO LAZY TO HOOK UP MY 360, THEREFORE ITS BAD K? Its not a valid arguement, sorry.

Yes, opinion trumps logic. TOTALLY! I've come to an epiphany today.

What? If you want to tell me that I have poor taste in games, go ahead, but I hope you realize how absurd and laughable that would be...

The original point of the thread was an issue of cost. But cost isn't always the only determining factor for consumers. That was the point of my posts. There are other issues that people take into consideration. I can afford to put together a decent gaming PC if I were so inclined, but it wouldn't make a lot of sense because the games don't necessarily appeal to me. I want to play the franchises I've grown up with. As far as I'm concerned, that makes more sense than dishing out $1000 (or 600) on a PC just because I'll gain a graphical upgrade. To say that stories/characters behind PC games are better than console games is completely subjective and totally absurd.

[QUOTE="Vandalvideo"][QUOTE="Jared2720"]lol... are you on some crusade to convert all console gamers to PC gamers? What's in it for you? I think the preferential argument trumps any cost/logistics argument out there.Jared2720

I did not say that PC stories are any better than console stories, however, I will make that statement now. In my honest opinion, they are. However, thats not to say your opinion is wrong, I'm merely making the observation that opinion trumping logic is so absurd its laughable. I don't try to blast other people's opinions, and like I said, PC gamers acknowledge preference as one of the few valid arguements.

[QUOTE="True_Gamer_"]...whats the point of "teh expensive" "argument" again?Jared2720

The point of the argument is that hermits are constantly boasting about the graphics of Crysis. If you can build me a PC that will run that game well for $500 or less, I will buy one for myself and for you. How's that sound?

1st the people that boast about Crysis graphics have the money to get those...you get what you paid for...

2nd A $512 PC tower with X1900XT 512mb and a AMD 3800 AM2 dual core will run any Xbox360/PS3 multiplat and PC exclusives at same settings meaning 640p for demanding/720p for medium and 1080p for non demaning games at 30 fps and low AA/AF...mind you thats a $53 CPU and $113 CPU....Ram is another 50$ for 2gb DDR2....HDD/MoBo cost $120...XP/MK/PSU/DVD cost another $180 total $512 newegg is your friend...

Ill wait for my PC...

Elitism? Hmm Im happy that Im an elite if it comes from you... You asked a $500 PC that can run CoD4 at 600p you got one... if you want better graphics you HAVE THE OPTION getting those...

And read my OP again plz...

A $500 600p 30fps 0AA/AF Crysis machine exists...what doesnt exist is a Crysis console with all that draw distance...

Lmao. Hermits, never say it's the console sheep that bring up these arguments. It's these rabid hermits like True_Gamer_ that love to beat it to death. Sorry mate, no matter what you say, you're not going to convert anyone. So yeah, don't waste your breath and go play Medieval II: total War or something.

It really bugs me that almost every PC gamer on this forum acts with such a condescending tone it really drags the image of the whole community down.zeroncali

Devil's advocate - what if console-only gamers are inferior?

If someone only games on "similar" platforms, they deny themselves the variety of gaming experiences they need to grow, learn, and evolve as a gamer. Actively avoiding the most open platform in existance is anathema to being multi-faceted. Whether it's a false-empahsis on "competition" in gaming, or failure to experience something outside of pre-conceived "tastes" a pure consolite or pure "PC gamer" denies themselves the ability to gain a broader view of gaming.

All communites appear hostile to some degree to the inexperienced outsider, the technical aspect of PC gaming leads many consolites to see elitism and condescention where it does not intend to exist.

-

You are correct to say not all console (by which I take you mean "console-only" as many console gamers are also PC gamers) gamers are narrow-minded. However, I find those who *actively avoid and insult* PC gaming are some of the least educated, least knowledgable, most narrow-minded gamers I encounter. The same venom they turn towards the PC they also turn towards other consoles they dislike, though I feel they bear a special hatred towards the fludity of the PC - its greater variety of forms, companies, and lack of central identity makes it harder to "stereotype".

Perhaps this is why those who truly hate the PC focus on stereotyping the people who play it, and building a straw-man of what "PC gaming" is?

Sigh. I hate this argument and this rivalry because it's more complicated than everyone makes it out to be.

Cost is a big thing, sure, but it's not the only argument and then there's a bigger context. Sure, there are a few farsighted people with excellent technical ability and smart money-handling skills but then there are a lot of people who aren't. Even if everyone on this forum knew how to construct these cheap but powerful computers, it's still only a small fraction of a greater population and more importantly, are the people willing and able to commit to such a project? I've done it before and I hate messing with that crap; it's infuriating. And it doesn't all instantly work.

Which brings up the other big argument for consoles. It tends to be hassle free. Plug it in. Put in disk. Turn on. Play game. All games are to work on the console. There is no "do I need to tweak my settings" or "do I have to buy new cards".

AncientDozer
Welcome to cookie cutter response #10, to which I reply, thats why you order a computer and have Best Buy assemble it for you. Hassle free. The "console gaming" is less of a hassle is such a played out arguement, we've already disproved it time and time again. Most PC games nowadays automatically give you settings that match your rig. PC gaming can be as simple as you want it to be. MISCONCEPTION.

It's weird, but how can you see tone from text?

Eg: Pc is better than console for the graphic. What kind of tone do you think I am using?

Tone can be derived from text. Didn't u learn that in school? its a rhetorical strategy much like mood.

The problem with "tone" in text is similar to the problem of sarcasm - without vocal inflection, it is easier to misconstrue what someone is saying. The combination of body language, vocal tone, and our own internal pre-conceptions says *far more* than a person's words. In a written-only format, you can only see the words, and how you interpret them can be, in large part, based on what *you intend to read* rather than what is actually written.

You also ignore that there is a degree of skill in writing - the poster can intend a message to be jovial, or edifying, and yet due to their word choice create one which you read as derogatory, or condescending.

-

I believe you're taking the definition of "tone" used to interpret a story - the "tone" of a passage. But remember in English class? There were always a couple of different interpretations - and that's the problem. Franko_3 is getting at how it's quite easy for you to read something that's not there, or in a way not intended, and he's correct.

That's pretty much my problem with the hermits in SW also. I love PC gaming and for the most part hermits are cool. Just not the ones that frequent SW.

As I've said before, bragging about a PC superiority in SW is like bragging to some kid that your car is better than his bike.

We get it.

That's the exact same way I feel. Nice comparison ;).

Hermits stopped caring about the price argument a while ago.

How completely true. What self-respecting hermit cares about the price of hardware? Its just not done.

However I think that what True Gamer is saying is more to do with the fact that console fanboy's use PC's expensive hardware as an excuse as to why it is inferior. Even though price has nothing to do with superiority. Value and quality are different aspects.

Well for one thing no that statement is not true if you dont know how to build yourself a computer. So what we do is point our fingers at dell, HP, Acer etc to provide us with great computers. They tend to be more expensive. I got mine for about 1000$ canadian from dell. Expensive yes but i like my 5 year warranty.

If you want to play crysis on medium you will need to spend over 1000$ on a computer. I mean i PC game casually with MMO's and maybe a shooters here and there but Console gaming is cheaper then PC gaming and you dont have to worry about your specs or upgrading or any of that with console gaming.

So really, your convenience arguement is whack as well.Vandalvideo

Spot on, really.

At the end of a console generation, the costs associated with both of them are probably fairly similar. You pay a little more up front and probably an upgrade or two over the 5 year period, but you're saving $10 on the cost of games (and I personally find that PC games go down faster in price- check the prices for Rainbow Six Vegas as an example). So even if you only purchased a game a month, that's $120/year or $600/generation- probably the cost differential and with some upgrades. Also, given that you're likely to own a PC anyway (unless you double your PS3 as a gaming system and a Linux box), you have to spend money on that while a gaming PC could do both if you needed it to.

I like mostly console-styled games myself, but given that many of them are starting to get ported to the PC and gamepad support is picking up, it's becoming more viable for a person like me to get into PC gaming.

[QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] And there are even more exclusive titles on the PC.

And what do you do when you have to do other things than play games on your computer? Carry it back to the desk where the monitor is and set it up. Then when you want to play games you carry it back to the tv? I don't want to write word documents and pay bills from my couch, it's all blurr from that distance. And how do I get my keyboard and mouse set up at my couch comfortably?

You can use a wireless gamepad such as the Xbox 360 controller for gaming on your PC. You can run a long cable to your HDTV or use a media extender to game without having to move your system, or get a laptop.
