I'm saying that Mass Effect is a RPG TPS, I'm not saying it isn't a RPG.

Yandere

So pretty much every RPG is a hybrid because you do two things, develop character and story(RPG) and attack things(action, turn base strategy, shooter)?

What type of RPG mostly always depends upon the combat, so I don't know what your trying to point out.

Um, try every JRPG, all Bioware games are advanced by fighting, Fallout, Diablo, Fable, Divine Divinity... almost every RPG relies on combat to advance the story in some way.

Mass Effect is primarily an RPG, as is Fallout 3, even though both have shooter elements.

rolo107

And Call of Duty is also a platformer because you can jump, right?

What the hell? That's the exact opposite of what he's saying. All your posts hate on WRPGs beyond belief, take into acceptance the fact that people have differing tastes than you. In Call of Duty jumping is a minor element, in Mass Effect/F3 shooting is a minor element, while RPG aspects are much bigger. You basically said the opposite trying to sound witty and failed.

No, I dislike WRPGs like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Diablo, etc, some of the best RPGs are made in the west.

Anyways, sure I wrote the sentence incorrectly, nothing to complain about though.

All RPGs depend on combat to advance. It is just some are more fun and interactive than others. ;)

I am pointing out that you are pretty much saying RPGs cannot have a stand alone genre because they have some fighting mechanics in them. You are pretty much saying that every RPG is a hybrid and should be called:

RPG/FPS

RPG/TPS

RPG/Action

RPG/TBS

Because you are not doing RPG elements all the time.

No, what you've been saying is that Mass Effect is a shooter because you shoot things, and that RPGs are focused on combat...

RPG is a broad term, it is only the genre, the sub genre defines things such as combat.

Action RPGs are (to me) all games that are RPGs but have gameplay from an action sub-genre.

Same with Zelda TLP.

You shoot stuff with the bow and arrows, does that make that game a shooter as well?

as far as i'm concerned even its a hybrid rpg shooter like dues ex,stalker, mass effect, and fallout 3 its still a shooter. As true rpg is something like fallout 1 & 2,The witcher, and dragon age origins.

So once again, completely disregarding the actual role play found ME and Fallout 3, the key components of which make a role playing game?

on the 360: No PDZ, No Gears 1 or 2, No Halo 3 or ODST, Left 4 dead 1 and 2, no mass effect 1 or 2

on the PS3: No Resistance 1 and 2, no Killzone 2, no M.A.G., no HAZE, no Uncharted 1 or 2, no MGS 4

seems like the 360 would still win in AAAE games when compared to the PS3 (honestly, i'm surprised)

kolkov01
Not really. The PS3 would still have Ratchet and Clank (regardless of weapons it's primarily a platformer), LittleBigPlanet, and Demon's Souls as just a few top games, the 360 would have about nothing. Anyway, so quick to count out the Wii are we?.... The only one of its top games that's a shooter is Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, so Super Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and the next one, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zack and Wiki, Punch Out!!, Little King's Story, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, No More Heroes 1 & 2, and the upcoming Monster Hunter 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, and Epic Mickey would all still be around. However this is of course not the case and many games that just have shooting elements (like Uncharted 1/2 which is also about 45% platforming and 10% puzzle solving) would still exist even if the pure shooters disappeared. If we counted those the PS3 would be in business, the 360 would be down...

It depends on what you mean by all shooters disappearing. If you mean they just quit making them, then I wouldn't be buying any more games, ever. The only games I would play are all of the shooters that had already been released. If all shooters disappeared completely, as in previously released copies just vanished from existince, then I would most likely quit gaming. No shooters, no interest.

no shooters would pretty much leave racers and sport games, so x360 would be better. since ps3 doesn't have much in the way of exclusive racers, well motorstorm is great but forza is better.

Last time i checked I couldnt put swords inside a shotgun (although the idea sounds cool if it worked) I still play RTS, RPGs, platformers and now back into adventure games on the PC so I'll stick with that and I refuse to play shooters with a console controller for some reason.

No, just because YOU think that it can be classified as a shooter doesn't change the fact that doing so will only make you look like an idiot. Which is why any gaming site you go on to will have ME, Fallout 3, Fable 2 etc. in the RPG genre. Except for Deus Ex. Here on GS it's classified as an action/adventure.

Urgh I hate hypothetical questions like this, mainly because if shooters didn't exist there would be another major genre that would be as overused, and both consoles would be full of them.

The fact that people are calling it a shooter and completely disregarding the RPG elements kinda kills your argument for both sides. I'm not ignoring the shooting elements, but people insist on calling ME a shooter, when it simply isn't.

But ME plays just like one though and was criticized for being dumbed down to simply lack luster RPG wise. And Bioware has confirmed that ME2 will have even less RPG in it due to the fact they heard the opposite complaints. ME plays like a shooter first and starting with ME2 if will even be intended to be a shooter first.

If mass effect counts as a shooter (those were the TC rules) then so does uncharted

As for the AAAE count, if we exclude the shooters the 360 has: Forza 2, Forza 3, GTA: Liberty city (not sure if that game counts as a shooter)

the PS3 has: Demon's Souls, InFamous (not sure if it counts as a shooter either) and LittleBigPlanet

so they would be tied actually

Like I said; How can something be a shooter first if it's combat is so damn ****ty? The combat in ME 1's gameplay videos looked fine to me, but actually playing it was horrible. ME2 looks like an improvement, but we can't be sure until we actually play the game.

And has the whole concept of the combat being only a small part contributing to a much larger picture gone over your head? I'm sorry, but the whole 'action' part of ME is rather bland, and the effort put into the other features of the game show that the combat isn't the main focus. As mentioned before, Fable 2 would be a better candidate for this kind of argument. Almost all of the enjoyment comes out of the combat and making money. The actual role playing is lack luster and doesn't even serve much purpose. Role playing in a game with an engaging story and interesting characters (Mass Effect) beats a good/evil moral choice system with NPCs that you can hardly give to ****s about (Fable 2).

i feel the same way about fps not all shooters in general and i also think mass effect while it will be a good game plays more like a shooter then a rpg thats just my opinion same for fallout3. For Dragon Age Origins and Oblivion Demons Souls those to me are real rpgs

I would love to see more jrpgs that would be so awesome

The game isn't MGS4, do you think the majority of your time is spent fighting and walking around or speaking to others? Yandere

Errr....in Mass Effect, you DID spend the majority of your time walking around and talking. Did you ever play it?

You'd be running till your muscles pump battery acid(FC), from the lynching mob around the corner.
