One game isnt going to cause everyone to switch from PS2 to Xbox, but it did help set the system in stone that it was here to stay.

my question is why do alot of cows see the xbox as a failure..since when did a console need to sell 100 million plus consoles to be called successful? the xbox sold millions of consoles not only after the ps2 released,but without already having a fanbase..calling that a faillure is just BS
If the Xbox had failed, they would not have made the 360. Selling around 25 million units of anything is not a indication of failure. It was just that the PS2 was an incredible success.

It had a few exclusives that were supposed to go to the Dreamcast (why they came to Xbox I will never know), a good library of 2D fighters, and Halo. It also had Breakdown, that was fun. But really, the true reason for it's failure is lack of space zombies.

you know people don’t give Microsoft enough credit do you realize what they have accomplished? they came out last gen with their first system with so many things stacked against them and sold more units than one of the oldest companies in consol gaming history(Nintendo) give them more credit than that, the xbox did not fail.

Halo is the reason the X Box didn't go the way of the dreamcast.
It sold 25 million didn't it? I think that's a pretty decent effort up against the PS2 (which had a massive fanbase due to the PS1) and a new Nintendo console.

It is true that Xbox sold the least consoles out of the three and lost the most money and had the weakest software sales overall but Halo was still a good game. Your example is terrible because Dreamcast had loads of good games and it failed ever worse.

Xbox came in second. It sold a few million more than the GC.
When the console launched, Halo was the only game that really caught on with people. It allowed the Xbox to survive the launch, and the years after, without going under. It sold the console until it assembled a multiplatform lineup and an online service that distinguished it.
Without Halo, the Xbox would have had an absolutely abysmal showing, and probably would have been lucky to sell 10 million units. With it, the console sold about 25 million, and established itself in the public's conciousness.
The Xbox failed because its game library couldn't stack up to the massive selection the PS2 had.
Yet another person on System Wars talking about things they have no knowledge of. The Halo is a great series and is probably the most influencial game for a console's success in awhile as it essentially 'single handedly' got the XBOX to sell and surpass the GC to take 2nd place. However the Halo series is only made up of a couple of games. To expect a couple of games to make a console a winner especially with such great competition, you're insanely mad. Just by its large contribution to the XBOX's success is something in itself.
As previously noted in the thread, Soul Calibur one of my favourite games/series of all time is probably the best 3D fighter ever but did it save the Dreamcast? No, it didn't unfortunately.In my opinion the XBOX had the weaker library of last-gen consoles including the Dreamcast.

I agree that the Xbox sucked... and had nothing appealing going for it, IMO. But the 360 was truly Microsoft learning their lesson. The Xbox was a novice company in the game industry's first attempt, Microsoft observed the competiton and their own flaws and made up for much of it in the 360. Sometimes in order to walk you have to stumble a bit, the 360 as of now is great (but mostly because of Sony's patheticism and the Wii's different interests) but I'm sure the console after the 360 will blow everyone's minds away and establish Microsoft truly as a wonderful company for both consumers and the industry itself.

Microsoft has tons of money. There eventual goal was to be the media center extension from the pc.  This has been there goal since day one. They did not figure on making money on the Xbox. There goal was to capture a fan base, which they did 25 million, and establish a brand name in the market place. Now with the 360 they have downloadable movies, stream music from the pc and videos, IPTV and many other eventual features. They have captured 10 million people in round two and this number will grow. Probably having around 35-40% mkt share this time around when it is all said and done. .
So the short answer...no the xbox did not fail. It did what is was suppose to do. You need you to look at the big picture to see if it was successful.
Xbox was rookie console and it beat out the veteran Nintendo. No small feat. MS also established a hard core base that has the highest game tie rate out of the 3 consoles, I can't believe that even those damn Burger King games sold like mad. Speaking from a business point of view, I'm sure Sony or Nintendo would appreciate a exclusive game like Halo and the user base that MS has.
You know if your console of choice isn't number one in sales it doesn't mean you're not going to having fun with it. Sonys console might not be number one this time around, I doubt if cows will no longer enjoy their console, but I do believe some will have a hard time with out the bragging rights. :(

don't let your bias fool you. PS2 is better than the Xbox and there is an overwhalming amount of things that proves this that I won't bother going over. Halo was really the only good game that came out of the dump that was the xbox and help build a fondation for the powerhouse that is the XBOX 360 today. The Xbox was really just doing it's best to stand on it's own feet, and now that it's learn to walk, watch it run.
